New member in Derbyshire
« on: March 18, 2019, 10:31:37 PM »
Just waving hello. I'm about to retire to my first ever house with a loft :o) Been sniffing round this hobby for years but never had the kind of space I needed. I'm sure progress will be very slow - need to floor the loft first for instance - but I decided on N gauge as it seems the more flexible in terms of space.

It will be a few months yet, but I'll be back with a ton of beginner questions :o)

Ask all the questions you like, the only silly question is one that is not asked, you may get a dozen different answers but you will always get one.

Welcome from another relative newbie. Ask away! I did and couldn't believe the quality of responses and the amount of interest from the members here.

A note of caution - you'll get carried away with this hobby, I did! (Haven't regretted it for one minute though!) SWMBO even recently told me I have to expand. She wants to "watch the trains" and my end-to-end design doesn't cut it for her.

Well, she has to be obeyed. Track plan on the drawing board as we speak.

Welcome aboard and to the fun of 'N' gauge.

Best wishes.

The Table-Top Railway is an attempt to create, in British 'N' gauge,  a 'semi-scenic' railway in the old-fashioned style, reminiscent of the layouts of the 1920s to the 1950s.

:welcomesign:  Marshall , Make sure you insulate the roof of your loft otherwise it will be like a sauna in the summer and a freezer in the winter ,if you can put in a closable air vent that you can open in the summer .
Also try to build your layout at about three feet or so from the floor ,don’t ask me how I know but it’s very hard work doing track laying and scenery while your on your knees bending over the base board .and I know that a soldering iron hurts when you are trying to wire the sections and point motors .
We are very nosey here so please keep us informed of your progress and don’t be worried about asking questions about anything .We have some experts in all aspects of this hobby.

Hi Marshall and welcome to the forum.
David.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm not - I don't think.

I can vouch for what @Bob Tidbury  said my loft is supposed to be insulated but it was unbearable last summer. By the way make sure the floor beams are strong enough to support a floor. In most houses they are just for the ceiling below, mine was reinforced and made level.

And welcome to the forum.

Welcome @Marshal - good luck with the loft. You can even start planning with some track planning software whilst getting the loft done...see thread on this subject...
