Toothill
« on: November 26, 2018, 08:41:12 AM »
I recently joined the Bentley Model Railway Group http://www.bmrg.org.uk/, the first thing I was asked was, do I have a Exhibition/show layout? I do not or should I say I did not, I am starting light weight portable layout designed around what will fit in my car (Skoda Citigo)2 X 1200X750mm boards. I hope to have this layout automated, it will be based in the Southwest and roughly in the late 60's/70's but Rule One will be used liberally, I have ordered most of the materials to build the Foam based baseboards, track (Kato Unitrack because I like it and Train Trax had a Black Friday 10% off deal) and most of the section occupancy detectors and point motor decoders.

The Baseboards will be foam cored with a 9mm ply outer frame, similar to the Woodland Scenics method but supplied by B&Q at a much better price.

This is what I have in mind.

It is the baby of the Skoda range similar to the VW up, Hyundi I10 or the Kia Picanto, that is a small city car. I can just fit two 1200 X 750 mm boards in the back.

Diane

I really like small layouts looking forward to this developing one constructive criticism if I may is make it an oil depot rather than a refinery even the smallest refinery takes up a huge area or for 60s 70s maybe a creosote works would have most of the same gubbins as a refinery and you could have oil products in in light tanks and creosote out in larger heavy tanks think some of the class B tanks from revolution would be suitable

I have now finished building the basic baseboards for Toothill and fitted my preferred joining/alignment method, loose pin but hinges. I will start track laying as soon as Osbournes get around to delivering my Woodland Scenics 2% inclines. I have also acquired 4 trestles from Homebase for a bargain £4.99 each cheaper than I could buy the materials to make them, OK they are not the ideal height being about 30" but if I add to the leg length later I still think they were a bargain.

Great stuff, Di, and those trestles were certainly a bargain. As you say, you can build them up to your preferred height.

Toothill & Freshbrook was my old stomping ground back in the early 80's  I often managed to find my way home through the maze even when incapable of anything else  :beers: ;D
Some of the people round there certainly opened the eyes of a young Fife lad on his first proper RAF posting  :o ::) ;)

The Right hand baseboard has now been sculpted to give the main level and the lower level and the 2% gradient between the 2 achieved using Woodland Scenics inclines and risers.

Track laying on the right hand board has commenced, I have given the baseboard surface a quick paint with the appropriate green and grey match pots.
