Moving - favourite stock disposal

Hello everyone. I have a dilemma. In a few months time (probably January) we will be emigrating from South Africa to a European destination. This invariably means a smaller property so maybe the existing layout will be alright so long as it's not damaged in transit but that's a snag. I have four trains which are too long for the layout (Blue Pullman, Dapol HST, Brighton Bell, Virgin 220).

Should I sell - will not get anything like a good price here - so not a good idea. I ran them on the club layout to acclaim by spectators but most N gauge stock runners at the club are committed to yanky outline.

Unless I get an offer difficult to refuse I think I need a wall mounted display box and just look at them longingly in our new home. Ny other suggestions ?

Why not just take them to Europe when you leave SA , then sell them on Ebay
or through the forum. If you put them in a static display they won't be moving
which was their original purpose and you might as well put a display of Del Prado models.

All 4 of those are good sellers, I'd be surprised if you didn't profit on them frankly, certainly the HST and the Voyager. If you really don't want to keep them I'd bring them over and sell them. Otherwise yes, a display cabinet seems sensible.

Must be a small layout if the 220 is too big mind, they're only 4 coaches!

Personally i would keep them and put them in a display case, you will probably regret selling them in the future.

Keep them unless (a) you don't like them and/or (b) you need the money.

Hi Bob,

We have been back in the UK for three months, our belongings have just been unloaded at the docks. We packed no furniture but sent various other possessions of sentimental value including all my model railway items in 00 and N - stock, scenery materials, track and buildings. I scrapped my layout and took everything off it beforehand.

We will no doubt be in a much smaller house and I will have a much smaller N layout. I may not be able to build a 00 layout at all but I'm hoping to find a club that will allow me to run 00 on their layout.

My thinking went this way, I wouldn't get much for my model railway items in SA, I would probably regret selling them and they would cost more to replace in the UK. Some items are limited editions which I certainly wouldn't be able to replace at all.

So I have kept almost all my model railway swag and once we are finally settled, I will have a big sort out and sell anything I don't need and get pounds for it

I think I will probably have quite a few display cabinets too, as I get quite attached to certain models.

If I was in your position I would keep the trains, even if they turn out to be too long for your final European layout they can be put in a display case, run at a club or sold to fund other railway items.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think a display cabinet will be the solution. I wonder if I made it so each shelf could have ballasted track and a back scene. I could even put the third rail on for the Brighton belle raised like the prototype to touch the collecting shoes !!! It'll be like four little layouts in one. I feel a little happier now.
