The Great Eastern Railway, By Cecil J Allen

Book Review: First published 1955
Fifth Edition. Revised and Enlarged 1975
Ian Allen Ltd

Author Bio- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_J._Allen

East Anglia, supposedly inhabited by country bumkins, if so, how did The Great Eastern Railway come to have ‘great character’ and probably the most efficient fastest running rail system in the UK.

This book is not an enjoyable read, it is full of details and photographs about people, locomotives, stations, and routes. However, if you are looking for the history and facts and figures about G E this is the book for you.

It covers the whole history of railways in East Anglia from 1825 until the1980s, including details of all the original railway companies in East Anglia that eventually made up The Great Eastern Railway and eventually The London and North Eastern Railway.

I’m glad I bought it, (second hand via Amazon), much of the contents were an education for me.

On second thoughts the above is not correct.

The book is difficult to read. It is full of facts and figures which does not make easy reading.

It is however, an exceedingly useful book for those interested in the complete history of The Great Eastern railway.

Shame to hear you changed your mind.

But could be useful to a niche market.

Thanks for posting!

I'm pretty sure this, and the complimentary 'Great Eastern album' by Riley were the first two railway books I bought when I first became interested in real (as opposed to model) railways in the mid 70's.......

Still have them both, but the dust covers are showing their age.
