Evening all

After a lot of head scratching regarding the signalling, I have finally come up with a plan :claphappy: With a little inspiration from (again) Llandudno Town station...Hang on, Sutton St Annes is supposed to be North West Lancs, not North Wales ;D

Ratio Kit No. 271 Pratt Truss Gantry. Controlling signals for platform 2 and run round loop.

Made a start on the gantry this evening and fixed it in place (temporary) to see how it looks. I'm happy, so the next job will be painting and a little weathering before affixing the dolls (from kit No. 270) ladders and scratch built grab rails. Signals will be exactly like Llandudno, with 2 home and 2 call on shunt arms. Home and call on for platform 2 (call on for shunt release moves) and home and call on for the run round loop.

Now then, the next head scratching exercise will be, could I have the signals working? If I did, then they would be manually operated via a pulley and crank system. This I am going to look into...

Cheers
Anthony

Afternoon all

Just having a quick test fit of the dolls before the painting process begins. You will see the 2 shorter posts, these will be for the call on (shunt) arms. I think I will fit the grab rails next before painting. I also plan on painting the staging in a well weathered wood effect for added realism. Having climbed up a few of these in the past (the day job) I know full well just how worn and weathered the wood staging is. Quite slippery in the winter months also!

The post (doll) with the home arm already affixed has been salved from an old layout. I was going to try and save this, but the ladder hoop is missing, so I have just ordered a new kit. The brass etch is a set of mixed MSE / Wizard Models arms. I feel these are more scale and realistic looking than the ones supplied with the Ratio kits.

Also instead of painting, I have found a company that produces these wonderful waterslide transfers. Note the arms and difference in shade. A mix of new, faded and rusty weathered. This will certainly make my life a little easier, applying these rather than trying to paint and weather myself.

Cheers
Anthony

Great looking layout - I have drawn it to the attention of the Exhibition Management Team of my own club.  They are starting to plan for 2019.

A few queries, purely of curiosity and filing for future reference.
a) is the builder of the core layout the guy who has traded on E bay as Immelmann .  When I was working on designs for Allanbrae, my new one, I saw some of his offerings in E bay and was certainly tempted.  In the end I have used my own design - inspired in part by Ian Futers gauge O layout Victoria Park.  And I bought the boards from PLS.  At shows it will use 3 of the 5 of the trestles which go under Portpatrick Town when it is on show.
b) Is that a traverser for the fiddle yard
c) I note there is only a "trailing " crossover.  Assuming it is nominally a double track, is there an assumed facing crossover off stage.  On my pre Portpatrick layout Abersoch, (sold at a show in 2003) I had used that dodge as a space saver.  Like Portpatrick Town, that had a sector plate for the fiddle yard.  18 months later I built a central board which contained the missing crossover and a small loco depot.

We have shared comments on magnets on the Facebook pages of the Forum.  I have sourced some alternatives on Amazon, (10*5*1mm) though with postage it worked out at 9 for 20.  Still somewhat cheaper than buying 5 packs of Dapol.  I'll test one on my test track but intend to use them on Portpatrick where I am now changing to easi shunt for local terminating trains and shunting the twice daily freight.

The answer to question A is yes, the builders name on ebay is immelmann4850. He's building a 10x4 oval for someone at the moment so hasn't listed any layouts on ebay for a while.

Hello All

Hope you have all had a very festive Christmas? I certainly did :beers: Now things have calmed down a little, it's time for a little post xmas modelling :claphappy:

Carrying on this evening with the Pratt Truss gantry. I have made a good start on the handrails (was dreading this part) Using 0.3mm brass wire, the uprights measure 6mm high and I soldered the handrail across an upright at a time, to try and get it as level as possible. That's the front complete, just leaves the rear and ends now. Then the fun part begins - finally installing the dolls :heart2:

Starting to look a little something like now...Can't wait to affix it to the layout.

Also just before Christmas, I managed to knock up the station nameboards. These were made using the wonderful Scalescenes R001a Station Signs and Posterboards download and typing Sutton St Annes into the text boxes, then just print. Regional Railways style too, which is perfect. Micro strip was used for the posts and then painted. Yes, they really are tiny!

Cheers
Anthony

Many thank's for your kind words Derek.

The signal gantry is currently in the paint shop. I think my next update will be the finished article. Currently just started on another batch of customer loco commissions, so may be a week or so before the next update.

Cheers

Lovely model and superb work with the signal gantry - given me some great ideas for my own signalling

Does the supplier of the signal arm transfers & brass etches have an online shop or mail order only?

Hello and thank you for your kind comments.

The etched signal arms were from MSE signals who are now either owned or trading as Wizard Models https://www.wizardmodels.ltd/wizardmodels/

The signal arm transfers can be purchased from here http://www.hall-royd-junction.co.uk/index.html

They certainly make a difference compared to the supplied Ratio ones.
