The ballast is Woodland Scenics fine grade, buff and brown mixed 2:1. I used two colours thinking it would give some extra texture but I think they're really too different in tone for it to work well. The weathering has tied them together a bit, but I think I'd go for a single colour if I were to build another layout.
Thank you. It looks great in the photos

Thought I'd try another shot in monochrome, and the recent pic of the Jinty in the goods yard seemed to be a good choice.

Which, as in Finchingfield, is in the Guildhall! - the long building near the church.

I've had the system in bits over the last few days since it was time to bring all of the computers together, so I know that I'm a bit late to the party but I wanted to add my congrats to the others regarding the magazine article.  First class job, as is the layout.  Thank you for sharing your work with all of us.

Here's another re-shoot of a picture included in the Journal article. Not much has changed - the rodding, some weathering of the ballast and different trains. Twenty layers for this one. I also cloned some grass into the bottom left corner to hide the baseboard edge.

The ex-WD was on southbound coal train duty today. It's a larger image than my usual 1200 pixels wide.

I've just ordered a further 15 wagons - just Peco kits - so I can have a train of empties going northwards. Given that the kits in the current train sat in a cupboard for several years it might be a while before they appear!

90201 heads back north. You'll have to imagine the train of empty coal wagons behind it!

Well, the empty wagons have arrived but I'm sure there's something I have to do to them...!
