The 08 will be faster than the 03/4 because they have the same motor and gearing (about 40-1) and it has larger dia wheels. Being heavier does give it better traction but neither can pull the same amounts as bogie diesels, and I doubt you would really expect it.

It does pay to visit a shop and test them before purchase if possible. I have found wide variations in performance between samples of both. Some faultless, some appaling.

No doubt their arrival raised the bar for N gauge locos though. Really good and well thought out designs. Would be nice if they were revised with the coreless motor chassis designs now being given to the steam locos, but I guess that might be a long way off.

I've got several 03's, 04's and 08's, I have a bit of a thing for the new models.  My first 04 is a superb runner (BR Green D2246), I was really surprised due to its short wheel base.  My first 08 a BR blue one is a bit lumpy, it was on of the initial new tooled 08's, however subsequent 08's have been better runners.  I have added several to the collection but all need a run in as all my stuff is still stored waiting for me to get my act together and get a new layout started after moving.  Moved in two years ago!
