Love the scenery, especially the ice cream van.. I will have to definitely get one of those! Quick question with your semaphore. Do you just have one on the scene, or do you have more? Trying to see how many I should try to fit.. With lots of points, I could go pretty crazy :)

There is only one signal.  There would be one in the opposite direction protecting the level crossing and station, but that would be outside the scenic area so I haven't modelled it.  I suspect I ought to have ground signals to control shunting movements across the level crossing and into the block section ahead of the starting signal: if I ever get round to modelling the point rodding I might put in a couple of ground signals at the same time.

Signalling is a huge area with lots of complicated rules.  Every signal has a purpose: they cost money, so railway companies usually tried to have as few as were needed to ensure safety. The Board of Trade (who approved new railways for operation) liked to see lots of signals everywhere. As a result, some lines fairly bristled with signals while others had far fewer.

Seconded! A particularly fine photo. of D5307. Very atmospheric. What a pity that the line has only a few months left before closure by BR?

Final checks before showtime - I set up the layout on its stand, made sure I had enough wingnuts (only just, I could do with a few spares) and was relieved to find that all the electrics still work.

The drape at the front is a bit rough and ready: it really needs edging and a bit of weight sewn into the bottom.  Not sure I have time to find someone with a sewing machine between now and next Saturday.  It will do for the time being. And one last item added:

Layout will now be packed away in its box and next time it sees daylight will be Saturday morning in Felixstowe.  I need to make up some stock transport boxes and put together a sensible tool kit for running repairs.  I knocked together a wheel cleaning cradle (some lumps of foam in an old ice-cream tub) which will help keep trains moving.  In other news, my Land Rover now has a new gearbox but needs the radiator changing.  But I'll get to Felixstowe even if I have to take the layout with me on a 'bus.
