Fab model, though the Intercity version benefits hugely by repainting the front window surrounds Falcon Grey to match the bodysides. Dapol are promising proper pantographs this year - both Stone Faively and the more recent Brecknell-Willis High Speed versions.

Beautiful model...Been waiting a long time for a proper 86. But as Adam says yes it could do with a new pantograph...I have a some Greenmax ones to change over to represent a Bracknell Willis pan, but a proper Stone Faively would also come in handy. I currently have 4 in my stock box to re-number / name etc

Please PLEASE Dapol can we have some more livery's....I don't mind getting my air brush out but a few more freight livery's would be nice. Would like to know when 86415 in Speedlink is due?? Also 86401 in NSE. They are advertised on Hattons.  Freightliner grey......????????

i think and i may be very wrong on this, but when hattons change to the picture of the model and not a picture of the really thing or no picture at all, it means its getting very close to being available. but i maybe wrong on this.

Dapol have got a fully-finished 86401 in the catalogue and it has been at recent shows, so I guess it's not long now.

Hi all,

The new dummy pantographs are very nice - I saw them last week in Model Rail's photo studio - and I am looking forward to upgrading existing models with them.

They were sitting on finished bodyshells of two new freight liveried 86s - triple grey with freightliner branding and triple grey with RfD diamonds.  Both very nice indeed!  I assume as we have had them for photography they can't be far away from the shops.

cheers

Ben A.

Picked 86401 from Hattons yesterday. Well impressed.
The colours look spot on and the new pantographs look miles better than the old one.

just a quick question, why are the overhead warning flashes red by the cab doors and yellow on the cab fronts?

Dapol have based 86401 on its current "as preserved" form, which does have modern OHL warning flashes. To backdate the model accurately, you'll need to change these and add high-level nose-end jumper cables.

Unfortunately it's not a case of changing them, but removing them without a mark as originally, in common with all AC electrics, it wasn't fitted with overhead warning signs. You'll also need to change the cab doors to the original single square recess door handle and remove the thick surround to the sand box covers on the lower cabsides.

I received mine today, and have just had a quick look at her.  I'll try and find some time to run her in later today.

In a photo I have of 86401 taken in 1989, it has a white strip round the base of the cab roof and no orange stripe around the cab. can't see any sign of any warning flashes at all although the photo is not the best angle.

does anyone know where to get the extra jumper cables and sockets for the cab fronts from?

The orange warning stripe was added to 86401 about a year after repainting.

I was doing a lot of OO modelling* at the time and had a Hornby 86401, with Craftsman detailed ends and had to add the stripe with Fox Transfers!

* - don't worry, I'm cured now!

My NSE model is superb, I'm very impressed.  I received the slightly older RES version today to which I paid 65.  Sadly the pantograph won't expand due to the brass screw being far too long.  I'll have to modify this.  Also, the orange 'cable' that would connect to the pantograph was snapped in the box.  I can glue this and paint it hopefully.  Looks like a great model though.
