Hi all,

Apart from making my layout over Winter, I'm also hoping to be able to get around to some kits that are part-done ... part of this will (allegedly :-[) include paint ...

Now ... when I get around to this stage, I have a couple of queries ... hoping for advice  :P

  • Pre-priming - OK, the kits will need to be cleaned.  What should I use ?  The mediums will variously be white metal, brass / nickel silver (like I can tell the difference :P), and plastic
  • Once cleaned appropriately, they will need priming.  Suggestions for the different types ?
  • Once primed - God knows when they'll get top-coated ::)  Can I assume the same cleaning product(s) can be used or is there another I should go for ?

Now ... assuming someone says "use an acid etch primer" - how ?  I'm loathe to use my airbrush for this (spray acid through it ???  :o), so maybe I'm showing my ignorance  :hmmm:

My preferred primer is Games Workshop's Skull White (or whatever it is now called).

Provided you keep the model clean between priming and painting you shouldn't need to clean it again.

Top coat you need to think about which paint you will use (acrylics, enamel etc).

Cheers, Mike

I use Halfords primers, they do several depending on the top coat colour. They do grey, white, black and red. I also tend to use they paints for top coat as well.

I have always found Halfords easy to use on all the surfaces you mention, and they provide an excellent base coat for either an enamel or acrylic top coat. The best results are obtained by spraying light coats to ensure detail is not lost.

As pointed out above by Red Death if you keep the model clean after applying the undercoat there should be no need for additional cleaning.
