Iíve just noticed that the Apple store lists a new Z21 (Lifestyle) controller app and a utilities app

Any experience with these? I need to go up to my Batcave in the loft and have a play / extensive testing session!

So the first picture is an app for a power inverter (Z21 or Z22) from someone in China.

The second picture is the 'new' Z21 app that has been around for the last couple of years, as opposed to the 'old' Z21 Mobile app.

i suspect I would have noted the KWh rating when I tried it!

and I didn't click that there was a new version till I saw this

https://www.z21.eu/en/z21-system/z21-app

And no one else has noted the "new" Z21 app AFAIK

Mea culpa!

Hi Nick,

I have downloaded the new Z21 app and first issue is importing locomotive library, I checked on the web and found some info, as I understand it there is no direct import facility from app to app, it seems I have to export via email and import from the attachment, I tried this and the "layout" is visible on new app but no locos. Any clues? Bearing in mind my limited tech abilities.

All the best
Steve

Hi,

I just added a 10805 Z21 'light' Booster to my system to control the points.

I was getting to the power limit of my Z21 as the layout was drawing 2.6A at rest!

And as I am using NCE Switch 8's, which don't like Railcom, and is something I may want to use in the future, I decided that I needed a reasonably 'smart' booster, I did a bit of research and bought the 10805 last week (about $100 here).

Here's a picture.

For your money you get the booster plus the Roco Booster Bus cable, which looks like a bog standard RJ11 phone cable. You DON'T get a power supply.
Roco sell one for another $85 but as all you need is a standard 12-24V 65W PSU you can either use an old laptop PSU (which I did) or get one online.

There are 3 config options.

Railcom on or off (on by default)
Automatic Inversion of track power (on by default). This only comes into play if you are using it as a reverse loop module (A Terminal loop in Roco speak)
Reporting of Short Circuits to the main Z21 (on by default).

Config settings are controlled by the single push button at the top of the box.

I turned Railcom off as the booster is controlling just my accessory bus and left the other two options alone.

I disconnected my accessory bus from the Z21, and connected it to the booster. Connected the booster to the Z21's B Bus using the Booster bus cable, powered it all up and everything worked first time

The only thing I forgot to do was to turn Railcom back on, on my Z21.

Regards,

John P

Hi,

I've been trying to get 2 Dapol 86's into a double header using the 'multi-traction' feature of the Z21 app.

For those who aren't familiar with this, it allows double heading, top & tailing, and banking without the need for CV programming of 'consists'

You run your locos at different speed steps (at least 3) over a fixed distance and measure the time taken. You then record the times in the 'traction' part of the vehicles settings on the app.

Then you add a 'train' and select the two locos you want in the double header. After that you select the double header in the app just you would any other loco.

Now the locos had different decoders, a Zimo MX621N and a Zimo MX617N, and for reasons I haven't got to the bottom of the MX617N equipped loco was 3 times faster than the MX621N equipped loco. As a result when I tried to use 'multi-traction' for a double header I got very poor results.

Control over the speed of the train was very poor with only 3 or 4 speed settings that the app would even accept, and if I tried to scroll up or down to change the speed on the app the actual speed setting would just jump up and down all over the place, and to top it all the train would stall at intervals running round the layout.

I resolved this by fitting both locos with MX612N decoders and did the traction settings again. Now with both locos running at pretty much the same speed at all speed settings all was well. The double header worked, I had full control over its speed and it didn't come to a halt anywhere as it ran round the layout.

Bottom line is that while the Z21 multi-traction feature is very good, it can't deal with locos that have significantly different speed behavior. Once I had both locos running at roughly the same speeds on DCC then all was well.

Regards,

John P
