I recall seeing a post on here recently from someone living in Valetta, Malta, but can no longer find it. or the member's name.

I would like to get in touch with the Maltese member as between 1987 and the year 2000 spent a lot of holidays in Malta, in "Birze" in fact and knew quite a few people there, and also know Valetta the Capital fairly well, having spent some time there where amongst other places visited the interesting War Museum at the far end.

When my wife and I (and children) lived in Chorley, Lancs, a neighbour of my wife's sister was a Maltese lady who came from Birzebuggia, and she let us use her flat there for our holidays for quite a number of years. Our kids loved Malta too, and my daughter even went back there when she was grown up without us.

This was before Malta became a member of the EU and the currency was the Maltese Lira, and a lot of the locals drove round in old British cars, and the cars we hired locally were either old Minis or Escorts.

Happy memories of drinking Cisk and Hopleaf and eating Lampuka and Swordfish,
and buying some nice silver jewelry I still wear at Ta 'Qali (have I spelt that right) craft village. Loved visiting the Blue Lagoon on Comino, and also taking the Ferry across to Gozo. Malta was pretty cheap then, but I believe it has changed since joining the Euro.

I have checked the Members Global map and there is no mention of anyone in Malta
However, Owl729 was so impressed with Malta that he registered his origin as 'Valetta, Malta' so that's perhaps where you saw it mentioned.
My mum goes there every year for 6 weeks during our winter and loves the place too. I've only visited for a week but found the place fascinating - then again I am a keen WW2 student. You're quite right in that most of the old buses and cars have vanished from the roads as one of the conditions of being a member of the EU was the introduction of a strict MOT type test. I remember sitting in the back of an old yellow bus anxiously watching the road through a dirty great hole in the chassis

My Father's brother was in the RAF and stationed in Malta during the War, and there is (was) an old RAF base not far from Birzebuggia on the South Coast.
Once got lost inside it and couldn't find our way out.

Remember the old buses (mainly very old American Chevys and such) where the driver had lots of religious "good luck" paraphanalia on the dashboard, as you needed luck to keep the Bus going and on the road. Malta's buses where all green in colour, whereas those on Gozo were all grey.

Fascinating Island with more interesting places to see and visit than you might think,
and yes - it does have quite a number of sandy beaches. If you ever go for a longer stay can tell you the places to visit.

Only been once (about 5 years ago) but it is a lovely island with a fascinating and poignant history.
Lovely people and we loved the old buses (sadly no longer there I believe).
