Not having access to unlimited funds I need to pick my spots, but I find I spend HOURS scouring the web, researching, reviewing, contemplating,  etc... and tie myself in knots.

I end up missing out at times, and striking too soon at others.

I'm not seeking advice, rather fellow travelers to commiserate with. 

Wondering how others' journeys are like.

Oh Scott,

 That old chestnut, it can get worse the less money you have.  I used to save for months and then go to a show (we only have 1 or 2 a year here I can get to) and then I walk in with my savings, only to walk out again because there were too many things I liked, couldn't decide and ended up making myself miserable!

I've stopped that sort of thing now mostly, I still have to save for months, but I try not to buy online, or at least tell myself I can't so I don't build expectations and just window shop.  That said I'm hankering for some Japanese models, so saving again and the stuff I've stuck in my wanted list at PlazaJapan is eye watering . It'll be tough to decide what to get when I finally think I've saved enough to justify an order!

I have limited my hobby budget for photography and model railways.
This forces me to keep thinking about what I really want to buy.
I'm building a small branch line and only buy stock that is more or less appropriate for the line. It should be GW approx 1930 but I stretch the period to BR western region.
I make 'to do' lists and only buy what I need for the next task.

Lesson learnt: buy appropriate stock when it is available because sometimes you have to wait for years for a next run.

The spiral of that particular rabbit hole is a difficult thing to escape. I was totally thrown by the new Peaks, for example. I was lucky that I was able to sell my Farish ones through N'Porium on FB, because if I hadn't, I wouldn't have afforded the new ones. I restricted myself to one a month for 4 months.
Now the new Dapol 33s are out I have a similar call to make. It's about pacing yourself I guess.
The new Bachmann Farish announcement today shows on of my favourite 20s will be out in the autumn - 20090. Again, budgetting carefully...

Just get a bunch of Unitrack and play on your table . It's probably the best choice of track system when you just need to put something together and run something, try different track plans and re-arrange repeatedly. Stir the loco lube and the brain cells!

That's what I use box of Unitrack for.  My permanent layouts are Peco code 55 for realism, wider choice of pointwork and flexi track.

Oh, man. Yes. If I was in the market for a Peak that would have been a dilemma.

Much the same as the OP, I often find myself spending too much time thinking, researching and planning rather than actually building something. A ~1 foot square T-TRAK module has taken me more than 3 years to get anywhere near completion.

I've come to the conclusion my actual hobby is looking for inspiration on Flickr and re-organising my stock storage boxes.

Same boat here being a pensioner. I normally wait for a review before pulling the trigger. I watch Sam's Trains and Jenny Kirk, mostly fast forwarding to the mechanism and running characteristics and decoder installation. I did jump on a Rapido Manning Wardle the second day it hit the market and then got worried that I may have jumped too early. Fortunately, it runs beautifully.

I did miss out on a Microace EF13-31 while waiting for any review. Luckily, after writing it off, I did find one a few weeks later.

I've fallen into the gotta buy it now before it goes out of stock syndrome and have to wean myself off.

Part of my day is going to the Kato Japan, Tomix, Microace, Rails of Sheffield, Kernow, Hobby Search, Hobbyland Pochi (used stuff), and getting myself into trouble.
