hi everyone

what bogies do farish wheels 379-412 actually fit?

they are just named as coach wheels - so I wrongly thought they would be generic and just fit any mk1 coaches...

they don't fit b4 bogies though, and b1 would need larger wheels ...

so what are these wheels for? b5 or commonwealth or pre br bogies??

anyway i'll have to return the 379-412 wheels as no good for me. it would be good if Farish could say on the packets what bogies the spare wheels they sell do and don't fit...

cheers

You need 379440 B1 bogies
379441 B4 bogies
379442 commonwealth

Not quite sure which coaches you have

I used a set to replace on 100 T TEA tankers
and a couple of coaches I was testing

oh ok cheers i see - so i need to buy the bogie frames as well to get the wheels it seems.

i need wheels for a b4 bogie (on a blue grey mk1 fk).

i bought it second hand at tings and the wheels drop out the bogie frames so something is wrong with them.  worn out or broken pin point axles i guess.

anyway you win some you lose some.  the learning point for me is check the items properly before i buy them! just because the body looks undamaged and mint in box still i should have checked the wheels were free rolling but not dropping out!  i tried pushing the bogie frame sides in a bit but no joy.

oh well first class passengers can be crammed into my only running blue grey first open for now ...  posh t###s anyway!!  lol

cheers

Those are the product numbers for complete bogies...
I suspect Tim wants to find wheels to fit the bogies he already has rather than finding bogies/coaches to fit those wheels  :headbutt:  ::)

To answer the orginal query, 379-412 are the ones I've used to replace 'pizza-cutters' in the old Poole-style 'one size doesn't quite fit all' bogies.

B1, Commonwealth, Stanier and Bulleid bogies all take 7.2mm (3'6") wheels part no 379-414.
Not sure about the more modern B4 types.

The only wheels I've come across are B1 types at 3'6"

Sorry can't be much more help but good luck with the project Tim

ok thanks everyone!

no worries I'll just bite the bullet and get the new b4 bogies to be safe ...

379-414 would be the larger wheels so wouldn't go with the b4 bogie.

it's great that we have different bogies on the mk1s though and great that you can buy replacement bogies (although that would be expensive).  i think most of my other blue mk1s have commonwealth bogies - which I think they needed to be permitted to run over 90 mph, or something like that.

Check that you want bogies that have/have not got the coupling box attached. New design Farish coaches all have kinematic couplings. They don't have coupling boxes attached.

I know people that have bought the wrong bogies for the age of the coach.

Good luck
Bob

oh yeh good point I'll check it's the right bogie for newer coach with kinematic couplings cheers.  tim

class8mikado

I have found that the smaller farish coach wheels that fit the b4 bogies/ Mk2's etc also have a shorter point to point axle length. If at sometime the previous owner has tried different wheels on your coach and reamed out/ drilled out the holes to accommodate them the original wheel sets will rattle around. Your options are either to replace the bogies or use someone elses wheels. I suspect dapol coach discs would now fit ....

bluedepot

new bogies/wheels arrived and fitted so the coach is in service!

yeh i think that's right class8mikado - the axle length is a bit shorter than other coach wheelsets... i wonder if it was sold second hand because one bogie frame was not holding the wheels in place, which is a bit cheeky if that is the case. a reduction in price and a note to say needs wheels / bogie sorting out would have been more honest approach and i probably would have bought it still.

anyway i have learnt something new about coach wheels axle lengths...

Cheers

Glad the pieces arrived.  Is the coach running well behind a loco?
