Having just re-read some of my railway books including one about the Drummond brothers, it occurs to me that it might be possible to make some y hacking Union Mills 700 class 0-6-0 and T9 4-4-0 and the Dapol M7  to produce some of the Scottish locos from the Drummond brothers; has anybody been brave enough to make an attempt, 700 into Caley Jumbo might be a good starting point, the smoke box area is the most obvious difference. T9 to HR "U"/"new Ben" another possible.

Another possible, Dapol Terrier to NBR 165/LNER J82?

It is funny you should mention modifying a T9, as I was just looking at the pictures of the UM T9 and thinking that it might make a suitable LBSCR B4 and was curious about your advice on the idea!

My T9 (as in my sig below) was done because the UM one was of the "300" series with wide cab and splashers and the 6 wheel tender fitted to those drafted to the Eastern and Central sections in the late 1920s and through the 1930s as the 8 wheel watercarts made them too long for the turntables.

As I model western section I needed the narrow cab and watercart; I milled a bit off the cab and splashers, and used a tender body from a Langley S15 kit with the Fleischmann 7161 tender drive.

Comparing the pics on the above links the B4/B4X looks "chunkier" with what looks like a  bigger boiler with Belpaire firebox, the footplate on the B4 curves down at front and rear, cab of B4 is similar but not identical, that of the B4X roof is different as are lookout windows, chimney etc different; so quite a bit of work. As for dimensions you would need to find a reference, I did a quick Google and did not find things like wheel base, I know the T9 but not the B4/B4X as I don't have any LBSCR books..

Also the B4/B4x were mostly gone by the start of WW2, only 3 made it to having BR numbers.

One problem you will find hacking UM locos is that they are almost solid white metal, filing or cutting is not easy, so the footplate alterations for example will need quite a bit of thought and work, not only removing the existing metal but making and fixing those curved bits. The loco body is one piece from top of chimney to the slots for the axles

The real thing, in steam, Swanage, 1991.

Shame about the face.

Apologies for the colours-these are taken from slides.

@N-Gauge-US , just had a look at some pix of B4/B4X, I thought a UM LMS 2P might be a better starting point, but the running plate dips at front and under the cab, the cab is also quite different, so not really much help. I know the 2P has been hacked to ex SECR D1/E1 classes.

I have recently been looking into the possibility of creating a Caledonian "Jumbo". Having taken advice from a kit basher, it has been suggested that the SE&CR C Class Southern SR Black (Sunshine) 0-6-0 Steam Locomotive No.1294 By Graham Farish | Code: 372-776 | would be a better starting point.

I have also made enquiries regarding the possibility of a 3D printed body which could use a suitable chassis.

Early days yet but an on-going 2021 Project.
