To celebrate Olympic achievements  the Post Office has been painting
postboxes gold, what a naff scheme , have they got enough money
they can waste it on this hare-brained scheme.

Now some sad tubes are doing DIY painting of postboxes silver
and bronze.

Why not just goldplate David Beckham and stick him on
Nelson's column for 4 years and give us a break
from this endless Olympic pap.

While everyone probably has an opinion about the Olympics & Paralympics and is free to express it, I think you will find others think the Post Box painting is a good idea, and that the event(s) has/have been one of the best things Britain has done in a long, long time.

I was very sceptical when the Olympics started (budget/security etc) but soon got caught up in the excitement of it and thoroughly enjoyed both the spectacle and Team GB's success. As far as I'm concerned, the Paralympics is even more important for all the right reasons.

Can I ask everyone to take into account the opinions of others and respect them? We are all different in what we like (thank goodness)

I doubt it costs much and I thought it was a nice gesture. It's cheap advertising for them at the end of the day like the stamps.

I'd be happy with a break from Beckham

I thought it was cool all in all.

I'm with you mate  ;)

Whilst I appreciate that many people have enjoyed the Olympics I too get absolutely sick of the complete media overkill just as we get with major football tournaments. It seems from the many sweeping statements on TV, radio, and in the newspapers that "everyone is behind the Olympics" and "the whole country feels a sense of British pride" :veryangry:  Well sorry but they don't. I know more people that wish it would go away than I do that are interested.

The ultimate insult I feel was that one night the ITV news ran the first three stories on Olympic achievements before saying "in other news, a girl has been murdered . . . " - total lack of priorities and sensitivity in my opinion.

As for Mr Beckham, he's just a waste of oxygen  ::)

They don't, although a few very successful ones might make a fair bit of money later as a result. Nor do the judges make a lot out of it.

The big media companies, the reps the head of security and the like OTOH...

Bit late to have a moan about the Olympics.

Personally I don't begrudge anyone who had their legs amputated after 7/7 anything, and wish them all the very best in their endeavours in the Paralympics

I think the Olympics were one of the most successful events ever held in this country and showed the World that we are still a great nation capable of putting on great events.
I am a sports fan and played football till I was 55. I was an avid watcher of the Olympics and even watched many events I hadn't watched before. Sport is a magnificent way of life and I believe we should honour those who rise to the very pinnacle and achieve something for their country.
Well done to everyone who achieved a Gold medal and well done to everyone who took part and well done to Royal Mail for honouring those who achieved.
I'm sure I'll get used to cream first soon.

I agree Olympians should be honoured , and have been
e.g. Sir Chris Hoy, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Steve Redgrave etc,
but in the end they are just pro athletes who won medals,
they haven't walked on the moon or invented penicillin.
The ablebodied and paralympic athletes should be applauded
but we don't need all the fundungus that goes with it.
In the words of Private Eye: That's enough Olympic stories:Ed

I thought the gold post boxes were a great idea.

Some of the paralympic athletes are as well funded as the able bodied athletes, indeed many train together eg the British cycling teams often train together.

You don't get paid a bean for competing in or winning a medal in the Olympics though obviously you can make money on the back of it....

Absolutely correct. It is part of the olympic constitution that competitors do NOT recieve any financial reward or other payment in kind for taking part nor as reward for success. They compete for national pride only...

As for Gold Postboxes - they're just so common... here in Hull we have gone one better and also have a gold Telephone box!
