Anyone own a small metal turning lathe?

Friends,

I have thrown the baby out with the bath water!

My wife and I purchased a Blue glass pyramid scented oil burner some years ago (Possibly 26 years) and it has sat on the mantel shelf for years.

Anyway, the wick holder and wick were yanked out by persons unknown and placed in a dish that collected all the loose detritus from around the home.


Anyway, I emptied the dish into a rubbish bag and it went with the dustman on Wednesday.  No problem!


Problem, YES! My wife knew of the existence of the wick holder and just hadn't got around to replacing it!

From the doghouse I now need to find someone who can turn a small piece of Brass to replace the wick holder. (About 3/4" at biggest diameter, I think?)

Anyone on the forum willing?

Peter, try to find any local model engineering club. They may be able to help. As an aside, here is a heart warming story:

Woodwork is my other pastime. A couple of years ago I was making a kitchen table in beech. I was stumped for the central column which was circular (6in dia * 2ft high) and I didn't have a lathe, so I asked Mrs Google for the local woodturners club, and she came up trumps and suggested I contact Harry. So I did. When I arrived he said he wouldn't make it, but "nay lad, why don't thee mek it thi'sen"? So I spent an entertaining day learning how to do wood turning.

Who says the milk of human kindness has long run out.

Similar to myself.

A lady came to visit me after I had been interviewed on BBC Radio Solent about my woodturning business requesting a table.

WOW! I thought a whole table!

I asked her how big a circle was the tabletop to be?

OH NO! she said, it must be square with square legs!

I have yet to perfect my square turnings!

Glad it worked out for you AND that you discovered a hidden talent!

This thread saddens me because in the workshop I have 3 lathes of varying size that I would love to use to help Peter out but my health means that all the investment in them and the skills that I prided myself in their usage id totally beyond me now

Would copper be suitable ? (easier worked than brass ) If so could you mount a small piece on your wood turning lathe, small screw thro' wick hole in centre onto a wood block, maybe a small dia washer as spacer, then a file or other hand tool. Maybe work it like metal spinners used to ?
then braze ( or silver solder or higher melt solder than a lamp flame) to a section of 3/4 copper pipe (or whatever the mm people call it these days )

Thankyou, the shape of the piece is almost identical!  3/4" was an guesstimate on my part.  Having measured the hole properly the Max. dia. is 1/2" with the piece down into the burner being 8 mm and the wick, I guess, was 4 mm round.

this could be problematic , to machine a replacement part you would have to supply the original or a drawing , or the complete jar + wick , then bearing in mind that modern day recycled materials may oxidise with the oils used .

looking on the lighter side , you could rub harder and the genie may help
