I have an old simple computer data switch that was originally used to swap between Printers on an old PC.
I was about to throw it away when I thought I wonder if I can make use of it on my railway, especially on my short piece of test track using the switch to reverse direction of the current to the engine.
Using just 2 of the 25 pins on the the 3 terminals (one Input 2 output) I wondered if I could connect a 12 volt supply which would go via the switch to the track, one pair of wires moving the train in one direction, the other pair in the other direction by flicking the switch.
Was a fairly simple job to wire up and lo and behold it works. The crocodile clips are the input wires from a 12 volt power adapter (a former mobile phone charger), and I haven't hard wired them in as I use them also on my train cradle when testing power directly to an engine.  The red & black wires are standard Peco N gauge track connecters.
Can now run a train on the short test piece of track from one end to the other, then flick the switch and run it back, which is simpler than having to swap the crocodile clips over each time.
Below is a picture of what I have done. (Do I get a prize for enginuity?)
