On the subject of "fantasy railways", around 1972 or 3 I built a diorama of a layout set on the Moon using a converted DC3 fuselage as the train, running on 00 track, and with the Airfix Astronaut set as passengers, Moonbuggies in the car park etc. Sadly no picture survives. I guess that passes as a "fantasy line"?  :-\
What a brilliant idea for a layout
Just one Pendolino, give it to me, a beautiful train, from Italy

:thankyousign:  Back then we were all Moon mad - the Apollo landings were still current and moon bases were being talked about. My thinking was "Bases, mmm, multiple - why not a linking railway between them?" I had a DC3 body and a great imagination! I have often thought of reproducing it but Airfix no longer make the Astronaut set - shame on them  :'(
If it's not a Diesel Hydraulic then it's not a real locomotive.

Somewhere from 1990 to the present day and an area that covers most of the UK but mainly the Midlands if I like it I can run it.

I have toyed with the idea of a wagon works / workshop so I can run wagons that would not usually run through the area.

This kind of thing?

Can't work out how to vote, but for the record, just South of Stockport where the WCML crosses the Midland line from Buxton to Cheadle Heath.

I want to model my local patch, but nobody makes models of the units that run through it.
Best wishes

Hi Jane,
I suppose that depends on what date you want to model. I would have thought there were quite a few models available for that area, steam classes and EMUs for example?
For example, even a quick look at Hatton's web site shows Class 33, 73 and 411 EMUs, lots of hauled stock, freight and passenger suitable for SR layouts, Southern steam and even Southern Railway buildings.
Are you sure you have nothing suitable?
Best wishes,
Greg.

If you want to model present day passenger trains in the South West/South/South East there then this what is available to buy new:

Kato Eurostar

You may be able to pick up second hand Southern Turbostars, SWT Turbostars and SWT Express Sprinters.

The Cross Country Voyager is no longer available either :(
Just one Pendolino, give it to me, a beautiful train, from Italy

I want to model things at Beckenham Junction as they are today. That means Electrostars and Networkers in Southeastern livery, and 455s, 456s and Electrostars in Southern livery. Eurostars used to run through, but since HS1 opened to St Pancras we don't see them any more.
Best wishes

My current (only) layout is N.A. but my next one will be British outline. I'm very excited about starting.
Spend as little as possible on what you need so you can spend as much as possible on what you want.

My current layout (still building) is BR(WR) set around 1970 - to me the best time there was. Everything before had been building to that moment, steam had gone  :claphappy:, diesel Hydraulics were everywhere  :claphappy: :claphappy:, diesel electrics were fairly rare  here :claphappy: - who could ask for more??
It is set on the Bristol Channel coast near where the west of Somerset meets the East of Devon and I have invented quite a complex history for the line (based in part on RD Blackmore's "Lorna Doone") which I believe is quite as important as any other part of the layout if it is to reflect a believable scene.
If it's not a Diesel Hydraulic then it's not a real locomotive.

Anyone with different taste in regions, period, or traction? ;)

Paul

:confused2: Are you suggesting there were other areas and periods outside the  BRWR in the early 1970s that are worth modelling then, Paul?
