Thanks all I will have a think. As my head is hurting now ;D I'll make another Metcalfe kit while deciding :)

Well at least 370-065 has a diesel in it, even though it is an old-fashioned colour  :D

My layout as a kid was on decent well framed hardboard and was fine. I'd still go the ply route however

I think any 0-6-0 would work for the loco, if he likes Thomas the Tank you could always print out a face on cardboard to put on the tank engine or diesel you choose.

You can buy Thomas the Tank and friends made by Tomix from Osborns and eBay but they are pricey. Are seven year olds too grown up for Thomas? I don't know any at present.
