I've heard mention of making vac pipes from old guitar strings , the  ones with wire wound round them. Is this possible in N gauge or only larger scales. If it is possible then what strings are needed to get the correct size for N pipes?

Probably best doing it with a string tuned for G...

That at least would provide "An Air on a G string"

Don't worry, I already fetched my coat...  ::)

The smallest string on my guitar which is wrapped is aroudnd 1mm diameter, may look a little chunky but could look the part. About time I replaced the strings so will try a short lengthe when I do and let you know.
It is a 17 gauge string if that is any help.

Best wishes
Simon - not a very good guitarist - am trying to lean and struggling and getting depressed when I watch people like Zak Wylde, Dave Mustain, Slash etc on youtube etc!!

I could try adding loads more info but think that would just be stringing you along.

For N you want much finer wire for the pipe itself but guitar string would do for the main bit I imagine. For the pipe texture use something like enamelled solenoid wire, solder it to one end of the bigger rod, tightly twist it round and down a length, solder botton, cut and shape.

I have some 25M reels of 32 SWG sold for stringing beads, I suppose that could work wound round a suitable gauge wire, just that the idea of ready wound guitar strings appeals to my instinct for any means of reducing labour.
