hi,

were any non blue/grey or non intercity liveried coaches ever used for charters in the 80s or early 90s?  did they have any coaches in maroon, crimson and cream etc etc... during this period for use on mainline charters?

cheers,

tim

Hi m8

Fairly sure SRPS coaches have been maroon for a good while prob early 90's think there may have been black coaches owned by Pete Waterman doing the rounds from about 94/95 if you can find some old copies of Rail magazine from the time period you want to model sure to be colour pics in there of railtours etc

Kind regards

Spot on for you period you also have the Inter-City Charter Trains Unit. There were three (I think) sets of dual braked Mk1s in Intercity livery but with white roofs.

bluedepot

cheers guys,

i found a video and a few pics with srps coaches in maroon from 1992. all the other pics i found online have been blue/grey or intercity though (saw one with nse coaches too).

i was thinking of getting some up to date blue riband mk1s in maroon or crimson and cream, but no real 'need' for them as i can have steam or diesel charters pulling my b/g or i/c mk1s (my layout is 80s and early 90s if anyone doesn't know this...)

yes i have seen pics of those i/c mk1s with the white roofs! i could paint a few of mine white... may do that in fact...  it's the kind of paint job even i might be able to manage! lol

cheers,

The ICCU (InterCity Charter Train Unit) was sold to Waterman Railways in 1994
When this occured six locomotives were included, although not the original ones listed in the sale document (as two failed between the document being published, inspection, and final sale)
The majority of these coaches were in InterCity (raspberry ripple) Executive or Swallow livery
About half of those had white roofs

Just prior to this (1993) there were a small number of private owner sets
Some had just a hand full of coaches which were then joined to sets from the ICCU (that way they did not need a rail operating licence from the BRB), others had complete rakes
Flying Scotsman Services hired one rake from ICCU
Steamtown operated two rakes; one rake in maroon, one rake in Pilkington
Humberside Locomotive Group operated one rake
Sea Containers operated one rake (VSOE)
Manchester Executive Travel operated one rake (former Lakeland Pullman)
GSW operated one rake (Royal Scotsman)
Queen of Scots operated one rake
SRPS operated one rake

cheers for reply!

i may use one set in maroon as per steamtown, and then for others i will use intercity or just blue/greys...

The SLOA Pullmans were around in the 80s - MetCams as modelled by Farish.  Can't remember what they used for brake ends but no doubt there are some pics on the Web.

There were diesel "Merrymaker" trains into the early 80s, which were basically excursions but run by BR rather than chartered.  Typically a long rake of rather tatty Mk1s in blue/grey hauled by a second-string diesel such as a 40.   There were also railtours, same stock but with unusual sorts of traction (I recall trying to thaw out after a trip round central Scotland behind two 20s in winter...).

would the 20s going to skegness have been 'merrymakers'?

when did preserved diesels first do mainline railtours in britain?

Already looked into this for my layout. Unfortunately Deltics didn't return to the mainline until 55022 RSG did in November 1996. Can't justify it I'm afraid  :(

I think the Skegness trains were regular timetabled services although summer only.  Merrymakers were one-offs.

I can't think of any preserved diesel running on the main line before the Deltic in 1996, but others may know differently!

Hi all

Much as I love Deltics and 55022 in particular it was D172 Ixion class 46 Peak which was first back on the mainline not sure if the date but was owned by Waterman Rail
