It is all a matter of personal taste...
Whilst I use my 'user name' and don't have my real name in my signature, I always sign off personal messages or emails with my real name.

Nice one !

In my opinion general (generalized) postings dont need personalisation and can stand on the merits of the views expressed within

And while we are here contemplating things
what's with this "Gender" declaration in profile,
is that really of interest ? (even assuming it is truthfully answered) How can I delete it !
Are not boys just as equal in railway modelling as girls ??

IanG

I'm in the unique position of having a unique name....I'm the only Ian Gardler in the world!, there was another one but he died last year.....there is someone else in the family whos middle name is Ian but he rarely uses it. I don't have a problem with my name being 'all over the internet' because it already is :laugh3:

And one of my extended family went to the moon, the rest were responsible for introducing the word "bereaved" to the English language Hint : google "define: reive"

can we get back to railway modelling help/info ?!

I agree 100% but its still nice to know that you are conversing with a human being with a name. :P

Got to agree with Claude and Pengy on this one....

Its all about personal taste at the end of the day, but i prefer my user name to be used on the public side to the forum, but i usually sign off with my first name in PM,s

My mates on here know me by face and name anyway.

My we are getting paranoid aren't we?  ::)

No-one is forced to add their gender, as indeed you haven't. But it does help to know sometimes as it avoids the usual "SWMBO" comments being accidentally aimed at female members (for them it might be a HWMBO, but knowing women I doubt it :D ). Also since there are few female members anyway I'd guess it is nice for the existing ones when a new female railway modeller joins the forum, less of a sense of being outnumbered by us blokes maybe, and gender isn't always apparent by their username or postings  ;)

Hehee, I wouldnt dare comment they might be watching :)

Yes, I think I agree with you.
Seemed like a bit of a grumbly thread, so I thought I'd add a bit of an extra stir !!

To save any PC types getting in a lather use the term TEWMBO.
(The entity who must be obeyed). That also covers any aliens, Daleks,
Mekons , Klingons, ghouls and zombies who might be using the forum.

Also any reluctance to disclose one's personal name might
flush out  "Those who walk among us".

Must dash , the 11.42 for Alpha Centauri is about to depart.

Cant see how this thread could be considered grumpy, if I meet a mate in the street or at a hobby shop I usually say G'Day John, Dick, Jack, Tom or whatever their name is, I don't say G'Day Bonk69 or 45690 so I cant see why it should be any different on a forum.

There is no security risk to using your Christian Name on a forum and as I mentioned some forums request that members use their Christian Name as a mark of respect for one and other, I guess it depends what part of the world the forum is created.

Anyhow it was just a thought and its quite obvious that some people are happy to exercise their rights to be called whatever they like, that is their prerogative, I just think it is strange that people some people don't want to be called by their first name and yet they are quite happy to post a mug shot in the members mug shots thread

I am now locking this thread as it has now run its course. There has been a useful exchange of views and some good points made.
