Picked this old girl up today, probably 25 years old by the look of it but its in pretty good cosmetic condition, someone had changed the name from The Black Watch to some other thing but I made some Black Watch stickers for the nameplates.

There was a suspicious smell of over oiling on it so I decided to dismantle and clean the entire loco, someone had even oiled the motor and the armature and bushes were oil soaked, after a clean up it seemed to run OK but the body seemed to be getting hot, eventually the loco came to a standstill, thinking the motor had burned out I removed the body and let it cool down for a while, after cooling off the loco went OK again.

Any ideas as to what the problem is would be appreciated.

It certainly looks in very good condition.

If you do find a solution to the overheating problem please let me know because I have the same problem  :D

cheers John.

Hi John, the light lit up this afternoon, I realized I had overtightened the four screws that hold the bogie's in place and they did not have enough movement , slackened the screws off a little and ran it in both directions, it remained nice and cool with no stopping,

Very happy to have this old girl in the collection

Well done, I am happy it was something simple and you have the problem solved.
A really good looking loco to rumble round your layout

I have a Deltic, I should get it out and give it a run  :hmmm:

cheers John.

Hi Dave,

Nice engine . I always remember these engines hauling freight up and down the line near where my grannie stayed. Of all the diesels these are my favourite and one day I may get myself a couple or three.

She looks lovely Dave . Great  :camera: too. I am glad you have got her running nice, what is she like for pulling power?

Hi Marty, I haven't loaded her up to much but being part of a preserved railway she pulls 4 or 5 coaches with ease, what beats me is how some of these old Farish locos from the 1980s are still running OK yet some of the newer ones give trouble  :confused2:

Cheers Dave, I do love my Deltics. I am eagerly awaiting the release of the new ones. I think I will start with a nice green Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry but I may have to get a blue one too  :D

Hi,as far as I'm aware, the mechanism for these loco's were updated in the late nineties.I have two,one is indeed the black watch and my other is a two tone green KOYLI.Both are going to be converted to dcc sound in the next few months so I can at least drown out the noise made by the slightly growly motor.
As for deltics pulling freight,I didn't know they did these type of duties. They were mainline diesel loco's that did express passenger work, replacing the A4 steam loco's.
Are you sure your not mistaking them for class 37's,40's or peaks?
These classes did mixed traffic due to their lower power outputs. As I live in Doncaster, deltics were, along with hst's used for express passenger work.Deltics were the main express loco until the intrduction of hst's in the late seventies and subsequently downgraded but not to freight duties.

Hi there Pete, stranger things have happened to Deltic 55-022 in later life  :D :D :D

East Coast Deltic! 55022 Royal Scots Grey Lynemouth to North Blyth Freight

Of course you are right they did replace the A3s/4s on passenger trains.

I've always known this style of engine as a Deltic and couldn't tell you the difference between the various Classes. Yes, it could have been a 37, 40 or a peak I simply don't know. As a youngster it was a Deltic. Even today I always refer to them as Deltics.

I have read somewhere in rail magazines about Deltics occasionally being seconded onto freight duties before they were retired. Sorry can't remember where I read it now as it was some time ago.
Took my grandson to the NYMR today and Royal Scots Grey was in service, she looked and sounded great  :)

Great model i'm no expert and really don't know what should pull what and what colour it should be or when it was round  but i know what i like.

I do like the shot in the video with the deltic standing head on with the exhaust plumes coming out like a snorting bull.
