He'll always be 'Sergeant Oddball' to me (Kelly's Heroes) and whenever I start losing the plot I hear him say 'Always with the negative waves ' and it picks me up
Others may remember him in his more serious roles

A sad loss indeed and I also always think of him as oddball, he'll continue to make a lot of people smile (have to go and watch Kelly's Heroes again

Yeah, another good one gone. He had a lengthy career, though. I always remember him in the original MASH movie and that one shot in Venice where the little guy in the red mac slashes him in the end.

I think Fellini even cast him as Casanova in a sex romp at one point!

a real loss, just finished watching a cop show set around the ICC in the Hague with him as one of the leading characters, really enjoyed it.

Donald Sutherland was also in a 1967 episode of The Avengers with Charlotte Rampling and Brian Blessed, along with regulars Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee.

So versatile.  A serious role in Don't Look Now (loosely based on a Daphne du Maurier story from memory).  And a bordering wartime "comic" in Kelly's Heroes and Dirty Dozen.  His eyes were so expressive - a touch of John Laurie.
