Quote from: njee20 on October 19, 2023, 04:09:51 PMI don't believe the current version is ever steam hauled

It was in 2002 as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee tour, and again in 2005 taking the then Prince of Wales over the Settle & Carlisle

QuoteIf you want steam haulage I think you'll need to go to a very old vesion, not the current or 1977 iteration. I don't even know what went before.

Prior to 1977, it was largely the 1941-built LMS Royal Saloons and Power Car, some modified Director's Saloons and some stock still in use from the LNWR Royal Train, the latter only being repainted from its LNWR livery in 1941 when the LMS convinced His Majesty that it really would be safer to have the entire train painted in standard LMS livery so it didn't stand out as being a special train.

This is the King's Saloon from 1941. The Queen's Saloon was internally a mirror image of it and they were accompanied by a similar style staff sleeping & power brake car to provide uninterrupted electrical power to the whole train.

When built, since it was wartime, they had armour plate shutters over all the windows and armoured protection covers over the axleboxes, all were removed after the war ended. They were "inherited" by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 and continued in service until they were replaced in 1977

The King's Saloon is now at the Severn Valley Railway whilst the Queen's Saloon is, I believe, at the NRM. The power car was scrapped.

Duchess of Sutherland hauled the current Royal Train between Holyhead and Llandudno Juction in 2002 as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. March 2005 saw it in use again, this time with Prince Charles on board running between Settle and Carlisle.

In both cases the loco carried a royal crown or crest on the smoke box door:
