Thanks Railsquid for confirming the scale as 1:120  (which is right for 9mm track gauge when the real one ran on  3ft 6in gauge track).

That it happens to have the roughly right wheelbase for something else is useful.   No problem re-using it.

Union Mills do a 'Claud'. Not as detailed as some of the other manufacturers but robust and relatively inexpensive.
UM also do a B12, but those are the only Ready-to-Run GER locos I can think of...

The only R-t-R 2-4-0 I know of is an early Germanic prototype looking nothing like any British prototype!

Thank you, I've had a look at the Claud online and understand Union Mills have sold out of this year's run, but may do another next year so will look forward to that. Looks like it might be suitable, both in terms of look and price for me. Plenty of other things I can be doing while I wait!

Here are two more N Gauge 2-4-0T locos that have been produced in recent years, both from Japan and of Japanese prototypes but they were built by British companies.

Micro Ace A0276  rebuilt Vulcan Class A1

World Kogei Sharp Stewart Class 160

Really helpful advice, thanks - and noted other people's thoughts on it too - that Micro Ace looks great, although looks like it would take a bit of research to try and track one down for sale.

Thanks everyone for such helpful thoughts and advice, has really helped me think through and even more enthusiastic than I was before - even if I have chosen something that might require a fair amount of compromise

The "Ichi-Go Kikansha", literally "the first locomotive", was imported from Britain in 1872
for the start of the railway service in Japan.
It ran between Shinbashi and Yokohama.
