I think to vary my wagons up a little, it's probably worth me paining future ones in bauxite brown. I'm really enjoying the Halfords paint via the can. Is there a similar product for the bauxite?
Halfords red oxide primer is just as useful.
Hi all,

Agreed with both the red and grey Halfords primer for plastic.

I spray a light coat of red first then grey on top. I leave a slight breakthrough of the red to represent rust. Then an overall wash of black. Then Klear gloss before decals, followed by Windsor and Newton non yellowing Matt coat.

For metal kits I use Halfords Etch Primer first, then same process as above.

Thanks

See my reply #8.

The red plastic primer is a good base for bauxite as well as maroon.

As I said, I find the plastic primers are also good on metal (and resin).

I use Simonz grey, oxide, white and yellow primer spray cans. Cheap as chips and lasts years.

If you weather your wagons nobody will notice anyway!

Thanks for the comments all, it's been a real help. For those who used the Halfords grey primer, have you had issues with Fox Transfers? For some reason, they will not stick and begin to lift once dabbed dry. Am I doing this right?

On a matt surface, waterslide decals don't adhere well and are prone to silvering. I suggest applying a gloss varnish patch on the areas where transfers are to be applied. Decalcote or similar  helps the transfers to bond and to shrink around surface detail. Then cover over with a matt varnish. Once weathered you won't see the join.

As with all transfers they work best on a glossy surface, a coat of Johnsons Klear or gloss varnish will do the trick. Also once applied a coat of Micro Sol before varnishing to seal them will also help bed them down nicely.
