Heard on the grapevine that Dapol might be doing away with the silly shaft driven tender loco's and putting the motor in the loco it's self, anybody else heard or is it just a rumour ?? :hmmm:

At the open day Andy said that they had gone to a manufacture who just makes motors and there was going to be a new transmission which drives the wheels by bevel gears.
There was no PA system and I was at the back of the room so did not catch all that was said.

If bevel gears are correctly aligned they are great.  Jouef did a nice electric loco that ran very smoothly in the 60's

However badly aligned they strip easily and are a maintenance nightmare.

Now if they are going to buy motors with an integral bevel gear we could be looking at a significant improvement and if they fail you can replace the motor and bevel.

I will watch this space with interest.

The move to loco motors may be to allow sound in the tenders which is the future.

They wouldn't go far wrong to use a similar set up to the Farish SR N class, had mine pulling a dozen bogies and it was only drawing about 30 - 35 milliamps, which is somewhat below previous offerings, I think the Fleischmann tender drive takes the prize at not far off 300milliamps, Poole Farish could be up to about 200.

It's my understanding their Bulleid light pacific has suffered all the delay as they are seeking a loco mounted coreless motor to fit.
