I bought a copy of the David & Charles "Railway Enthusiasts' Handbook" for 1968-9 yesterday which includes a brilliantly pompous advert from the "Ilford Junior Model Railway Club" with the following warm invitation to prospective modellers aged 13 and over...

"There is nothing to interest those who only 'play trains',  but for serious enthusiasts a large Library and Technical Drawings [my capitals] are available".

Bet their meetings were a right laugh replete with japes and general horsing around aplenty.

How good that times have moved on. Or have they? Anyone with modern equivalents?

All these years on, and while the Ilford Model Railway Club wanted serious members and I was getting wasted on Jimi Hendrix and The Who....

I'm still playing trains  :-[

Going by their attitude I'm glad I was more into exploring the opposite sex then ::)

While there is a time to be serious in this hobby such as running a layout at an exhibition , I personally think the point of ANY hobby is to relax and ENJOY yourself other wise what's the point, you have to be serious at work and there's ALLWAYS things that need doing in the house when you get home ,So you have a hobby to enjoy and help you forget all the trials and tribulations of life .
Even at an exhibition things shouldn't be too serious because that might put people off of the hobby as they might think you need to know everything about the running of the real railways and in the hobby situation it is ALLWAYS a representation of the real thing .
Just my humble opinion for what it's worth.

Without getting into a theme that has been expressed in many earlier threads, we are basically big people playing trains.

I think the OP is about being amused at the dated thinking of the time?
