NEM Sockets not gripping well

Morning All,

I have had a situation where I have 10 Mk1's in a rake and when been dragged around it pulls the coupling out of the socket on one particular coach. Anyone else had this? The plastic that grips the coupling has just worked loose it seems.

Obviously I could put the carriage at the rear of the rake but its a buffet so not a long term solution.

Any easy fix other than super glue (which i don't want to do)?

Have you tried tacky wax, I use this on my wagons that uncouple and it solves the problem.

A work-around would be to swap the bogie onto the coach that is last in the rake....

All very well, unless you have a terminus or other reason for the rake to work in both directions!

Is it definitely the pocket that is the problem or is it maybe the coupling itself? Have you tried the coupling in another bogie?

Sounds like a job for tackywax or other adhesive, failing that a new bogie, maybe look on Ebay for a spares/repair lot.

you could run a loop of fine wire around the socket (with the coupler in situ) and tighten it up with a pair of pliers - a bit of black paint and Robert is your father's brother!

If you squeeze the little pins on the coupler with a fine pair of pliers to make them fatter vertically it'll make the coupler a stiffer fit in the socket, and should help.

cheers for the suggestions... will try squeezing it although they do seem very brittle..

If not I love the idea of swopping bogies.. I do have a roundy roundy so the last coach does not have a coupling on.. duh why didn't I think of that!!

This is on the couplers - so if you do have a problem they are easily replaced - the sockets mounted on the coach are untouched.

Just remember the couplings are a separate part on the newer "Blue Riband" coaches so swapping the bogies on them won't make any difference...

There was a discrepancy somewhere in the size of NEM pockets on coaches.. A manufacturer got the size of them a little wrong but that has been corrected on newer releases..

I believe an older coupler inserted in an older socket may solve the problem along with using Farish couplers on Farish stock.

I get the feeling that @DJM Dave may have a bit of info on this... Apologies in advance if I am wrong Dave!
