Friends I have just purchased the Class A1 'Tornado' #60163 BR Express Blue 4-6-2 Locomotive and it came with a spare front bogie, why?

Regards, Peter.

The spare bogie has larger, more to scale wheels. The bogie with the smaller wheels is fitted as standard as it will go round radius 2 curves.
Cheers Peter.
:beers:
Size matters - especially if you don't have a lot of space - and N gauge is the answer!

Hi Peter,

You should find that one bogie has smaller wheels for "tighter" curves and the other has more realistic sized wheels which are suitable for larger radius curves.

Thank you, you would think that this sort of information would be included  in the instructions?

Regards, Peter.

A lot of the time you have to use your crystal ball Peter..

Either that or ask away on here and someone will know the answer!!

Unfortunately Peter, UK manufacturers in our scale are at the back of the que regarding detailed instructions and in depth info regarding their models. Both Dapol and Farish are as bad as each other in this regard but in all fairness things are getting a little better (Although still many miles behind German/United States manufacturers info/instructions sheets)

Luckily this forum is a lifeline regarding technical matters with loco models.

All the best Peter, let's see some pictures of your Tornado!

Agreed that manufacturers really ought to tell us what the extra parts they bother giving us are! Farish is better about it than Dapol but they are still very inconsistent in what and how much they tell you. Often there is a note on the instructions sheet for Farish models that shows where one or two of the spare fittings go or says what they are, but invariably there is a piece or seven in there that I look at and go "What the b***** h*** is that?" I believe there are cab doors with Tornado too (I'll check mine when I get home), but, fair warning, the reason they aren't installed is the same as the bogie: they limit your curve radius! I think someone would be doing us all a great favor if they started a thread/site cataloguing the extra bits you get with various locos and where to install them.

As promised I went home and examined my parts bag. I took some pictures of the various bits and of the places on the instructions where GF shows you that they should go. I remember now thinking that Tornado probably had the best indicators of where stuff went that I've seen (still not perfect). Below are pictures of the parts, the instructions and my Tornado pulling out of Avondale Station. Tonight I may try to fit all of the spare parts I can figure out and if I do, I will post pictures of the result as well :)

Hope these prove helpful!

Philip,

You are a star!

Now why couldn't such information be included for others?

Thank you for ALL the pictures, really great to see both the locomotive AND the spare parts!

Warmest regards, Peter.

No problem, Peter :)

I will try to fit the spares tonight and let you know how it goes. I won't be changing the bogie/wheels or adding the doors or stairs(?) because I don't want to do anything that might limit my curve radius permanently, but I will try to install everything else. :)

All the best and very happy to see you posting regularly again,
Philip
