Are all the larger steam locomotives by GF Tender drive?

Friends,
I would like to buy another locomotive up from a Jinty or an 0-6-0 and I thought that I would give GF a try.

I am a little biased in liking the drive motor actually driving the locomotive wheels but have absolutely no knowledge of GF locomotives!

Are they ALL tender driven nowadays?

Regards, Peter.

The new Farish locos produced since Bachmann took over were mostly tender drive. These include the Jubilee, Royal Scot, 4MT and Black Five (I may have forgotten a few).

Their most recent releases have reverted to loco drive using coreless motors. These include the WD 2-8-0 and the Standard 5. The Std 5 is a good example of a "go anywhere" loco having worked on most regions of BR.

The other option is to go for one of the old "Poole-era" tender engines (of which there are plenty). However most of these designs are over 20 years old and have lower levels of detail (and sometimes accuracy) than modern models.

Dapol models have the motors in the tender but they do actually drive the loco wheels through a mechanical linkage between the tender and the loco. This means the loco doesactually do the hauling and is not being pushed along by its tender.

That looks like a Poole model so the motor will be in the loco driving the centre axle.
