Cost effective DB overhead catenary masts
« on: February 15, 2019, 07:22:25 PM »
Hi all

I will soon be embarking on the construction of my DB layout - Era III / IV - and will be needing a cost effective overhead line system.  Now, whilst I have a hefty stash of Vollmer put away, it is nowhere near enough for what I need.  So I have been busy......

As a part of my small r/c model boat business, I have purchased an SLS 3D printing system and I am going to see if I cant effectively produce the catenary masts using this method.

I have in mind that they can use either the Vollmer or Viessmann wires so they can be either live or dummies.

The drawings for the basics are done - just awaiting the printing machine's arrival to see if all this is possible.  Using PA12 nylon as the print medium means that the masts will be strong enough to withstand knocks without breaking.  From calculations I have done, I can expect to produce these masts a fair bit cheaper that buying either Viessmann or Sommerfeldt.

I will update just as soon as I have managed the test prints!

Interesting!

I still rely on picking up old Vollmer or Minitrix sets, but I refuse to pay the silly money some ask - like £6 or more for one piece of catenary wire  :censored:

I know it's overscale but I trust the robustness - this lot has survived 70+ shows since 1996 and still as good a new.

Like you Nick, I refuse to pay that sort of money.  Whilst the faithful Minitrix / Vollmer sets might look a little clunky today, I have always found them to be excellent for the purpose.  I see no need to fork out for Viessmann or Sommerfeldt unless you want super-realism.

BTW - I DO remember your Konigshafen layout very well.  I still have the magazine that it appeared in and read the article quite regularly.  I find it a very inspirational layout indeed.

Cheers Matt!

The new layout is designed and costed - but the build start wont commence until July as I will be building it at my house in France.  Not enough room for it here in Blighty.....not to mention that I am up to my eyes in work.  Layout building will have to be confined to holiday breaks until a couple of years hence when I retire and move out there full time.  I wish I could crack on with it here but I will have to content myself to working on the 'ancillaries' such as constructing the kits of the buildings and smaller 'modules' to add to the main layout at a later date. Maybe I should start a build thread?

Regarding your layout - I am following your adventures avidly.  I am pleased that you are enjoying yourself with it - it looks a cracker!

As for the catenary masts and the like, if they prove viable I might well offer them up for general sale - lets see.

Thanks Carl, you have a good memory!  Yep, Continental Modeller Oct & Nov 1997 (two consecutive issues).   Glad you like the layout.  Things have moved forward with the times, I run more modern stock most of the time (though still have all the stock from those days of course as I can never part with anything!) The station has been upgraded with some modern canopies and an elevator as you can see in that photo.  There's also a whole additional set of baseboards that run along the front and carry trackage to join in with modular systems!

(Actually if you look very carefully you'll spot the "lost"  Dapol Britannia and coaches that had been posing for photos that day!)

Hi Carl,

Sounds like you have some very interesting plans afoot with your future layout, yes we'd love to see updates on your plans and pre-building!

Well, to take this little topic a bit further, our 3D printer system is now up and running and I have run off some test prints of the catenary masts that I hope to be able to produce.

The photos below show the first efforts - some refinement needed and maybe a re-think here and there on certain points, but I think there is a possibility for this.  With the system we have it would be possible to print circa 75 single masts or 150 tower masts in one printing session.

More soon when revisions are made  :beers: :beers:
