What a bus queue looks like where I live

My bus stop is the same as Q has - there ain't one! The nearest 'main road' bus stop is 20 miles away, although I believe a bus does come through a nearby village, (5 miles away), once a week - a long wait if you miss it  :).

I'm an 'old' njee and I occasionally use the bus, with my free bus pass, to go into town and check my life insurance is up to date and funeral expenses are properly covered.

Yes indeed, mate. The Police here are like locusts and will put you in the lockup for smelling of alcohol.

Therefore I do my driving during the day to get stuff done, then put me car to bed about 4ish and catch buses from there on.

Wondered if that may be controversial  :)

Fair enough, obviously don't know what they're like where you are George, but it seems they're always slow, sporadic, and not going anywhere useful whenever I look! I get using London buses (although I never know where they're going), but outside of the capital (and other major cities to be fair) they always seem totally useless!

Very sensible George so you will never catch this one for being over 0.05.  :beers:

Actually the big story about bus stops in NSW, where the photo was taken, is they are in the process of replacing the internationally recognised icon of the front of a bus with the white letter B on a blue circle. Railway stations are marked with a T on an orange circle, trams (light rail) are an L on red and ferries are an F on green. The new metro rail service will  be an M on aqua (because they are running out of colours). It is sad that an international city like Sydney has decided to abandon international symbols and introduce English capital letters for the various service modes. To add confusion, at busy interchange points, the various bus stops are differentiated London-style by letter codes, so the B stops are adorned with multiple other letters. Something of a dog's breakfast.
 :hmmm:
PS: No free bus passes in NSW. Us oldies have to pay a max of $2.50 per day, but it does cover B, T, L and F for a range of about 150km around Sydney.
 :beers:

I was going to get on the bus
But it was too much fuss
Then I thought of the train.
But that was a real pain.
Next up was the car.
That was a step to far.
I even thought of my cycle.
But had lent it to my brother, Michael.

......

It's the ballast.
I blame it on the ballast.
It's driving me nuts and I'm cracking up ....

Ballast every day
Leads the mind astray.

not completely related but the Rail company I work for is a bus company (and management thinks everything can run like a bus), so I guess I am on a bus everyday well according to management I am.

Does mild exist in Dorset ?

Yes, I do.  Very handy indeed to get to and from the station.  Both for business and 'off-duty' travel.

Not eligible for free travel, but I don't mind paying (it's cheaper than parking as well - if a space could be found).

And, if the homeward journey has a  :pint: - no problem at all.

Best wishes.

We probably would use the bus iff it was a bit more reliable. We often see people standing at the bus stop in our village for up to 45 mins or so.
We do use the park and ride every time we pop into Truro though.

I use the park & ride if I go into Preston as it's £1.50 return, far cheaper than parking in the city. Just 7 months to go and I'll get my bus pass. Huzzah! :claphappy: :claphappy:
There has to be some benefit to getting decrepit :-[

Think you still have to pay for Park & Ride services though as Bus Pass is not valid on them. Also where I live not valid until after 9.30a.m. Believe some local authorities have slightly different rules.

Exciting times at George's local bus stop!

No abandoned trolleys at mine, which is actually the terminus of two lines, but it is manned by two baton-waving dudes whose job is to assist the buses to turn around in a space not really big enough for a bus to turn round in.

Do for work every day - no train service from where I live to the centre of Sydney, so my only option is to ride the motorway bus for an hour (an hour plus most days) each way!

The good news is we do get a train line from mid 2019! Introducing the Sydney Metro (https://www.sydneymetro.info/)

So this has taught us that buses in Oz are pretty good (albeit with dubious signage), whilst in the UK I remain unconvinced.

The service in my town is very punctual, but infrequent. The bus to and from Chez Bealman only runs on the hour, last one from the watering hole being 8.25pm.

The fact that I drink with most of the companies drivers who have adopted this club as the watering hole after work doesn't help - sometimes I have to move to a different table because of the diesel fumes  ;D

We can't use the bus pass at peak hours but after 09.30 it allows free ride on the P & R.
If you can find it, check out Fred Wedlocks 'Bristol Buses' - totally unPC but somewhat amusing.

Contrary to popular opinion we do have public transport here in the US of A and I am a pretty regular bus user in Philadelphia. Here is a photo of my local bus stop (on the very left) with the bus I had caught broken down (and blocking a busy intersection) after having travelled about 50 feet. There was no way the next bus could have got past so I walked instead - the shortest bus journey I have ever taken!

Oh, and another bus stop quirk....

These aren't birds, they're bats.

There's hundreds of them nesting in the trees on the motorway off ramp up the road from the bus stop.

They stink, are riddled in lice, and every night they fly off. Council refuse to cull them, and two years ago I ended up with them nesting in a tree in my backyard.

Cost me $1800 to have the tree removed. Yet the same council put that $450,000 palm tree art in the mall  :veryangry:

Otherwise, Happy New Year, folks!  :beers:

Have the HIstoric Commercial Vehicle  Group still got their museum in Tempe?
Went there in 1992, when the above photo was taken, and they had an interesting selection of vehicles there, including a few (Adelaide?) trolleybuses.

Another great photo!

Can't answer the question, unfortunately, but there is most certainly an active bus community here.....

I know because they were running preserved buses from Bankstown station to the major Sydney model railway exhibition at one point.

Maybe they still are.... haven't been recently

I know because they were running preserved buses from Bankstown station to the major Sydney model railway exhibition at one point.
Back in 1992, they ran a shuttle on sundays to the museum from Sydenham station. This was being worked by a Sydney AEC Regent III on the day we went.
At least the rules for running preserved buses in NSW seemed to be a bit more relaxed then than in Queensland. The Brisbane Tram Museum had an interesting selection of motorbuses there, but it wasn't practical to put any of them back on the road due to the strict regulations in force. I think they had to be restored to full PSV operating standards and taxed/licenced/operated accordingly.

One of my favourite bus stops right outside one of my favourite pubs! locals will recognise the stop sign from the now defunct "Hants & Dorset" bus company, services now run by the Wilts & Dorset company.

When I was a kid, my family drove down to Narooma from Cooma for summer holidays. Wouldn't know anything about bar prices from that time though.

Still a very nice place Narooma despite there being stacks more people there than there used to be.

While the alien spaceship in the sky, especially after the attack on the bus stop the other day, have been deemed rather worrying by the British Government and the Royal Family, what has arisen as a greater concern to them both, after enlarging the photograph, is that there is a man in Australia playing bowls wearing trainers, shabby shorts and a loud T shirt exposing what looks like numerous tattoos.

Quite frankly, it's just not on and something must be done about it.

Malcolm Turnbull has been informed but the instant reply was 'Lighten up Liz, you pommy cow'  :D.

Anyway, rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd just post on here that there's a bit of excitement building up in Wollongong (well, the local paper is getting excited) as we are hosting Wigan vs Hull FC at our local stadium on Saturday.

It actually is sort of exciting as it is the first Super League fixture outside of the UK, and there are quite a number of fans here for the event. Good tourist dollar! Coming after Elton John last September it's got to be good for local businesses.

As an added bonus, the stadium is right next to the beach, in a lovely location. For any fans we may have on the forum, it will be televised live, so tune in and see our town and enjoy the game!  :beers:

Unusually high number of goals there, or is it the sport with the pointy-ended ball?

In local bus stop news, the other week I and the Squidlet were heading for the local bus to Mitaka station (which as far as the Squidlet is concerned is the focal point of all train-related travel) when we happened upon the aftermath of a collision between a small white sports car and the Other Bus (which goes past the hospital where the Squidlet was hatched but is otherwise of No Interest) and the Squidlet is still jabbering on about it ("white car bwoken! bus bwoken!").

This probably should be in the angry thread, but is anybody else annoyed by the fact that at shopping malls all the different stores use different size trolleys that are mutually incompatible? It really irritates me when they insist on a coin slot to ensure you don't leave the country with the trolley! You never seem to be able to hook up your trolley to another because they are all so different!  :veryangry:

@JonHarbour (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1600) In the UK I get a handfull of the plastic tokens that are available to replace the coin in the trolly handle slot so you can leave your trolly anywhere 'cos the tokens are disposable.

I will send you a sackfull or maybe just a heap of £1.00 coins because they do not seem to be worth much.

There's a picture in the local paper today of a little girl playing in the snow beside Tower Bridge in London, and it says my native NE England is totally shut down. Almost makes me homesick... NOT

Anyway, back to the bus stop.... legendary, don't you know:

There have been a few recent additions, such as a visit by Robert:

Accompanied by presumably his girlfriend:

This also turned up at the bus stop. The  mentioned car park is just across the road from the stop:

Bit sad I thought, though it's probably roadkill by now. Anyway it turned up in the local paper too:

What about a Musical.

Barbra Streisand decides to move to Wollongong for the better weather. There, she fights off alien spacecraft, watches some British rugby league touring sides, becomes a master at crown green bowls, sets up a petition to ban anything other than sport to be shown on a TV in a licensed public bar, rescues missing dogs plus other adventures.

However, she's not really happy and finds solace in having a Big Mac and large fries while serenading inanimate, wheeled objects parked at her local bus stop.

Just an idea, can't think of a name though  :hmmm:. 'Hello' something perhaps?

This isn't exactly Wollongong, but it was our local bus terminal near where we stayed in Fort Kochi, southern India. Bus activity was a bit quiet in the early evening so a few youths decided to take advantage of the available space to play India's favourite sport.

Here's my ticket home. I guess it's a bit like a British Oyster card. This card works on buses, trains and the Sydney Harbour ferries.

Apparently not a good idea to implant this under your skin (https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/mar/16/bodyhacking-scientist-who-implanted-opal-card-chip-guilty-of-fare-evasion). Don't say you weren't warned.

The implant in question was one of your local Opal cards.

In Japan, a discreet QR code tattooed on the inside of your forearm will be sufficient.

Sorry, no posts from the bus stop lately.

The bus company is experimenting with a mini bus on demand!

Ring up, comes pick you up door to door, $1.50.

Ok with me

Post by: daffy on April 23, 2018, 11:12:28 AM
We have a vaguely similar thing here called CallConnect, with minibuses on set routes responding to requests online or by phone.  Darned if I can find the cost of the fares though!

$1.50 a trip door to door - will that take you as far as Perth or Sydney? :hmmm:
 :D

Seriously, how far will that fare take you? Sounds mighty cheap.

Daffy, there are three operating in three different areas of the Illawarra region. I'm lucky enough to live in one of them. It's just a small area of operation, but good enough for me!

However, it's only a trial period, and to be honest, I don't think it's getting a lot of use. Aussies worship their cars too much.

We have a thing called rail a ride, you pay £8 per year to be a member, and 2 days a week you can ring them up and for £3.60 they'll take you from your door to Hoveton about 10 miles away with the return journey being a couple of hours later. That's enough to shop in the big supermarket there or go to the bank.
If you are going one way that's the nearest railway station..

I have just lifted this from a website called 'Get there.ie' regarding getting a bus from my nearest town, Ballinamore which is 5 miles away, (in the UK it would be called a village!), to Enniskillen, (Northern Ireland), which is a town! If anyone is in the area of County Fermanagh, I can recommend a visit, it also has a model shop, which does not have a lot in n gauge, but is good for model requisites.

Ballinamore ⇒ Enniskillen ( Only)
View all operators

Today, Tue, 24th April
Tomorrow Ľ
The next connection between Ballinamore and Enniskillen is on Fri, 27th April.

And 'they' wonder why people in rural areas refuse to give up their cars!  ::)

My favourite local bus stop with shelter and over the road the "waiting room" a Wetherspoons! you can sit in the window supping a pint and hop out when the bus arrives, it's a turn round stop so the bus will always be there for a couple of minutes. If you miss the bus you can always have another  :pint: while you wait it's a half hour service!

And this one is in town. I took this on Anzac Day after I'd finished helping to run the two up game at the Leagues Club. This bus stop is not a very nice place to be on a night, unfortunately.

As long as the caravan is behind the car... My mother once managed the trick of placing the caravan in front of the car, albeit on a German autobahn.

I was following a car and caravan at the M1 M6 junction it was proceeding up the M1 when it realised it should be proceeding up the M6.
The sudden change of direction meant the caravan went up the M 1 sideways, the car was going up the M6 sideways . Untill the combination impacted on the Armco in the middle, bits flying every where.
I was on the inside lane going up the M6, and escaped the wreckage.  Some other cars were not so lucky...

Hi all,

I mentioned long ago that I wanted to take a pic of my local bus stop round the corner to join in but felt it might be too weird or words to that effect.

Anyway, did some pics on my layout today (haven't been in the room for a few days) and realised next door have had a tree removed.

Hey presto!....

Just the small sign in the distance I'm afraid but the Calvados bottle came out well.

Can try and get one of a bus now but they seem to run to a Spanish timetable (Bolivian on Sundays).

Anyway, thought I'd keep the thread going (or not).

The main reason I'm not posting pictures of trolleys at the bus stop lately is because the local bus company, Premier, are now running a service in my area called Premier on Demand. It's door to door, for $1.50!

So I simply ring up from the club, and get dropped off right outside Chez Bealman!

I wonder if one of them's saying ' Hey Man, I think I'm freaking out, is it me or is that weirdo guy taking pictures of the bus stop?'  :D

Ah, just a weird habit I'm into... like them, I suppose.  :worried:

Wished I'd taken a few in Liverpool and Wigan a few years back!  :beers:

Maybe a hint to your nearest and dearest about a potential Christmas pressie (https://herwigphoto.com/soviet-bus-stops)?

Speaking of buses and stops I did have a chuckle yesterday whilst driving near Brighton. The destination blind on the bus in front of me said "Brighton Pier, limited stop". Well it would be wouldn't it? Otherwise it would fall off the end!

Made me chuckle anyway

The local bus company terminated the door to door service last Friday. Bealman now has to go to the bus stop again to get home.

Brilliant timing. I'm scheduled for ankle surgery next week and won't be able to walk anywhere. Guess I'll have to stock the fridge up!

@Bealman (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=255)
The major supermarket chains can deliver whatever you want here in Blighty. Don't you have anything similar, George? (or maybe just get a tanker parked outside and pipe it in :D)

Hi George,

Shame about your door to door. I had an big ankle operation in 2005 and it was surprising how many of my local pub locals offered me help, lifts home etc. Even the odd pick up.

Also a taxi driver who recognised me hobbling up the road on me crutches from the High St to the pub stopped and said 'why no ring cab' (asian accent). I said 'because you have a minimum charge of £3.50'. 'Get in you fool, free today, for you £1.50 in future, £2 if I'm busy  :)'. People change.

Hope your 'bowling' crew will pitch in for you and good luck with the op.

Cheers weave  :beers:

Get yourself a motorised wheel chair. Just think of the fun you could have with that! :)

Anyone remember my local bus stop? About 300 yards from where I'm sat right now.

Filmed 20 years ago this week but regularly re-broadcast on TV.

Certainly do.  Used to be delivery driver for Currys in Glossop in the mid eighties so was in and out of Vasey twice a week.  Mrs Bulla's mum also lived for a while on Brosscroft.
As for the tv series, only saw the first episode, Glossopian  wife thought the actors weren't 'local' enough!

All the (tougue firmly in cheek) best
Stan.

Hi George

Hope that everything is well after your latest encounter with the death merchants. Hospitals are dangerous where you can go to get infected.

Good prognosis, everything sorted? I hope so.

Hi Ian,

Unfortunately, that's exactly what has happened. I was in rehab learning to get around on my knee scooter when things started going backwards.

Things turned slightly pear-shaped last week as the wound had become infected. I was moved back to the big hospital and underwent further surgery last Friday. The infection turned out to be pretty bad, and after having had it all cleaned out, I've been on iv antibiotics since.

News a bit better this morning as an inspection of wound suggests the treatment is working, but I'm off to theatre again on Wednesday for another internal inspection.

At least I'm spending a fair amount of time on the forum!

Hi George

Good to hear that you are moving forward again after what sounds like a very disappointing and scary setback. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you for the Wednesday results. I'll have another beer or two on your behalf this afternoon.  :beers:

All tentacles crossed (until I need them again) wishing you a speedy recovery  :beers:

Back on topic ;) my bus stop user experience has been considerably improved by the realisation that I can get real-time info about where the bus is on my smartphone, which is important for the one route which does not originate at my local bus stop, as it doesn't have a service information display and the nominal 6 buses an hour service can result into a 25 minute wait if one is unlucky due to traffic and the uneven intervals between buses, which means I have traditionally avoided that route

Hi George,

Sounds horrible but glad it's getting better.

Good luck on Wednesday. I had an accident in 2005 where my foot twisted completely backwards and was in hospital for 3 months as there were a few problems too but got there in the end.

On the plus side, it gave my liver a well deserved rest and when I came out, everyone in the pub said that they'd never seen anyone come out of Hospital looking so well.

I found out about 6 months later that my mother, knowing me well, had gone to the pub while I was in the hospital to say 'when you visit him, he's going to ask you to smuggle beers in so I'm begging you, for an old lady and loving mother, please don't'. I did ask them all and they never did. At the time I thought it was bang out of order  :veryangry: but bless 'em.

I'm probably not helping much but just to say you'll be fine.

Take care, get well and you'll be 'bowling' in the bar before you know it.

Cheers weave  :beers:

What a nice post, weave. Thanks!

Posts like that cheer me up and are much appreciated when I'm lying here feeling sorry for myself.

Cheers!  :beers:

Actually when I was in rehab last week, Mrs Bealman was smuggling in the odd beer for me, but now I'm on strong i/v antibiotics, I have elected to put a hold on that!

Thanks once again,

George  :beers:

Our local hospital gives free infections with operations too. Think of no beer as an investment, all the locos you can get from the money saved. :). How's the motorised wheelchair coming on? It could be converted to run on alcohol too. :beers:

And with the correct gauge, it could be converted to run on rails too! (Trying to imagine George going up and down the ward in the chair going "Choo choo").  ;D

While I'm playing the waiting game here while they think up some new torture to bestow on me (just kidding, the staff and doctors are very good), I'm re-reading Bill Bryson's book "The Road to Little Dribbling".

For those of you familiar with it, on page 228 he has an amusing description of a British bus stop. ;D
