Title: Shapeways trial the option of purchasing .STL file
Post by: RailGooner on October 06, 2019, 09:22:32 PM
Recently discovered that Shapeways seem to have introduced the option of purchasing .STL files.

Example (https://www.shapeways.com/product/GVADZ5LC3/20-waste-container-manchester-80s-n-gauge-1-148?optionId=59485910&li=marketplace).

Cue hoards of modellers adding 3D printers to their Xmas wishlists! :D

Not seeing any option other than to buy a print in smooth fine?

Yeah, I also can't see any option to buy anything else either.  :worried:

What browser are you using? Edge on Win10 here. Perhaps browser/OS detecting code is deciding true/false for 'display download STL element?'.

Could be an A/B test. I've checked a few models and none of them had it. Chrome on W10 and Safari on iOS 13.

Would be interesting to know if @Vonzack (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=660) has actively chosen to make the STL available, as that price is crazy cheap really, or if Shapeway's T&Cs allow them to do that to uploaded designs.

I checked the page source code and the server i'm seeing does not have the download capability so could be a test or is there all the time but switched off for most models in anticipation of a new feature.

The designer would have to give permission for their stl to be sold and I'm not aware of any consents being asked for my models.

Maybe I'll take a quick look at my wishlist/favourites and buy some .STL files quick sharp! :D

Yeah skim reading their T&Cs does suggest that you don't grant permission to do that, I imagine people would be seething if they did that. It definitely looks like it's in testing - the fact it's in USD, despite RG's currency being GBP, the fact that I can't see it on that exact model, logged it or not.

I would! Want to buy me a few things too!?

Everything I look at, all my favourites, everything(!), is showing the option to download a .STL file. And the download is the same $9.99 for every item. Yes, Dollars, even though I have Pound Sterling set as my default in Shapeways.

I'm going to try and buy a file of one of my favourites. :worried:

Stand down everybody. When I clicked on the 'Download...' button it changes to read:

Thanks for your interest!
This feature does not exist today but we are running feasibility tests. We will announce future plans for this feature at the appropriate time.

Makes sense! Early days Id wager judging by the apparent number of people (not) seeing it and the currency/price thing being the same universally.

Yeah, sorry but the STL shouldn't be for sale. Had some good results running this off on my Photon as one of the trains I want to model is a Manchester 'binliner'.

It's a shame the Prices at Shapeways make these so expensive.
