Title: Oxford Diecast 2019 – deliveries and announcements
Post by: woodbury22uk on December 10, 2018, 08:31:18 AM
With the final Oxford deliveries to retailers just about over for 2018, I thought I would start a new topic for the 2019 period. 2018 was the 25th anniversary of the founding of Oxford Diecast although the N range is only about 11 years old. Predictably the special 25th anniversary model – a 1/43 scale coach – missed being delivered in the year. The late delivery of the N Christmas Coca Cola model is a disappointment too (NTCAB007CC).

At the end of 2017 Eloise Davies took over as MD of Oxford Diecast when her father (Lyndon Davies) took over as CEO at Hornby Hobbies.  The resources at Oxford have been spread quite thinly in 2018 although the level of releases has continued unabated at around 25 models per month across many scales. A greater proportion of manufacturing has been devoted to reissuing popular models and in 1/76 scale, and there have been some quality control problems, especially one which affected a large proportion of a new JCB licensed truck.

32 new N items were announced in 2018, and 35 items were released.

The list of announced but not yet delivered N scale items is below.  This time last year there were 3 more models on the waiting list than now.

N105008           Ford Anglia - Yellow (Vyv) - July 2019
NCA021            Bedford CA Ice Cream Van - Mr Softee  July 2019

NFT021              Ford Transit Mk5 - Stobart Fleet Maintenance January 2019
NFT023             Ford Transit Mk5 SWB Low Roof - Network Rail April 2019
NGG001             Green Goddess - AFS    Sept 2019
NLRT004            Leyland Royal Tiger - Maidstone & District April 2019
NMB007             Mercedes Actros Curtainside - McGawn Bros
NMGB003         MGB Roadster - British Racing Green June 2019
NMMT008         Morris Traveller - Almond Green (Dot Cotton) August 2019
NMN008            Mini - Surf Blue/Old English White May 2019
NMW6001          Bristol MW6G - Royal Blue   Sept 2019
NNMN005          New Mini - British Racing Green and Union Jack  January 2019
NNR006             New Routemaster - LT50 General    January 2019
NNR007             New Routemaster - First West Yorkshire Feb 2019
NRT007            RT Bus - Browns Blue August 2019
NSDF001           Shelvoke & Drewry Freightlifter - British Rail (Western)  Sept 2019
NSHL01TK       Scania Highline Tanker - BP  July 2019
NTCAB006       Scania T Cab Semi Low Loader - Sandy Kydd August 2019
NTCAB007CC    Scania T Cab Box Trailer - Coca Cola Xmas Feb 2019
NTR008              Tram - London Transport August 2019
NVWB005        VW Beetle - Black   Sept 2019
NWFA002         Weymann Fanfare - Grey Cars -  May 2019

* = first release of new tooling

Delivered items marked in red

I will try to keep this list up to date as items are released in 2019.

The newly tooled items were announced in January (2) and June (2) but I have seen no evidence of pre-production models. Hopefully these will emerge at the London Toyfair around 22 January 2019. The next planned announcements will be made at that time.

The gaps in the range continue to exist for all sorts of periods for cars and light vans, medium weight trucks, some useful but unusual bodies like livestock carriers, refuse collection vehicles, and just about anything you can think of. Even with upwards of 350 vehicles already available the range is never going to satisfy every wish. Oxford’s method of tooling for the N items is to include 4, 6 or even 8 items in the same tool, which is designed to allow any one of the items to be run separately. The downside is that if just one model needs extra work at the tool design and cutting stage then the whole suite of models is delayed. The tool cannot be finalised for production until all the items are at production standard.

Surprisingly, apart from the Ford Cortina Mk3, the most recently tooled cars like the Hillman Imp and the Jaguar XF have not seen recolours announced. New liveries continue to be announced in the bus and coach range, and my favourite New Routemaster bus continues to carry new colours.

The current range appears here with many of the newer announcements near the top of the page:-

https://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/collections/1-148 (https://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/collections/1-148)

The current all scales catalogue can be found here:-

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/3257/files/OCT-JAN_19.pdf?15357187787527904344 (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/3257/files/OCT-JAN_19.pdf?15357187787527904344)

It is worth noting that this is not a comprehensive listing, and that the number of items listed is limited by the 48 page format.

New deliveries are announced in the monthly Globe magazine which appears online here with a link from the bottom of the Oxford diecast website homepage, shortly after the hard copies have been sent out to members of the Oxford Collectors Club.

The November 2018 edition is here:-

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/3257/files/Globe_226.pdf?3654387956796095472 (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/3257/files/Globe_226.pdf?3654387956796095472)

As before I would like to mention that I have no formal relationship with Oxford Diecast other than as a customer, and as a source of information to them for new models I would like to see made. I do try to keep abreast of what is happening at Oxford Diecast, and report it here. Sometimes my travelling schedule means I am a bit later than some other parts of the internet with updates.

Thanks Mike for that detailed account of the current state of play.

I had a sneaking suspicion that my Hattons advanced order for the Christmas Coca Cola Scania T Cab would be unfulfilled for this year.  :(. Oh well, that’s Christmas for you: full of pleasures, and disappointments. :D

I was a bit surprised to read that amongst this month's deliveries are 11 previously released out-of-stock items where a further batch has been manufactured, made up of 6 buses, 2 farm tractors and 3 agricultural trailers/implements.

A disappointment that there is no new tooling

Seems again that Oxford are not that interested in N gauge  :worried:

Although I did pick up the new BMW Mini in British racing green with the Union Jack roof today from the Ian Allan stop in Waterloo - nice little model.

:'( Imagined I am sorry to say, but an impression supported by the holes in the tops of the containers they supply which replicate the ones on the 00 gauge containers, but are larger to accept what would be larger pins on the N container lifter spreader bars.

Meantime you can wait for the 1950s Shelvoke fork truck which according to OD has been a pig to tool in N. The reach stacker should be easier.

Maz Woolley at Model Auto Review has published a report on last week’s Oxford trade presentation including photos of pre-production models in N. Included in these are the new shapes for the Land Rover Discovery and Bristol MW coach.

There is also comment on Oxford’s efforts to catch up on the backlog of releases.

Arnold have announced the imminent release of HN6434 which is a set of two DB low sided wagons carrying four BAOR Land Rovers from the Oxford diecast range, which may be a new variation. Can't read the registration numbers in the photo.

Mainly metal diecast?
Maybe in 4mm but the N gauge ones are all plastic.
They look good though pretty sure series 1 landies were out of service by then if used over there at all. Am sure tgere are more knowledgeable guys on here who can confirm either way.

Best wishes

Well at least the base is diecast. I was surprised to learn that the formation of the second BAOR predated the Land Rover Series 1, and the Cold War began in 1947 according to Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army_of_the_Rhine

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War

The Series 1 88inch was introduced in 1956 when the military were ordering Land Rovers in lots of 200. They served during the Suez Crisis in 1956, so may well have been with BAOR then or later.

Someone on the one of the Facebook Groups suggested that the Land Rover had been shrunk to 1/160 scale, but I am fairly certain it is still the 1/148 scale model, and Hornby are latching on to their current minority shareholding in Oxford Diecast's parent company to provide something different without having to tool from fresh. I also think that the same will apply to the range of food vending trailers coming in the Arnold range.

I had missed Arnold's post about the RENFE version of the flat wagons and Land Rovers (HN6424). They do indeed appear to be a variation of NLAN188001 without registration plates.

The last news was sight of the raw mouldings assembled into a model at Model Rail Scotland. This is one of the 4 new shapes awaited which were announced in 2018. Oxford Diecast have said they have reduced the announcement of new items to try to catch up on the backlog of unreleased items, although to be fair the N backlog is no different than it has been for the past 4 years, albeit that the new shapes have had a longer than normal gestation period.

There are pictures in message 34 on this topic (page 3). https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=43753.msg555552#msg555552 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=43753.msg555552#msg555552)

Sandy Kydd low loader

UK retailers do have them, Jackson Models already sold out but may have had only 3 in stock. TMC have them.

I emailed Hattons asking if they are going to stock them and they replied, yes and will be on their website soon, I think they may have missed this in their ordering as it was never up as a pre-order

There is always the option to order direct from Oxford. Jackson's were at a discount, TMC full price

Photo of Scania T Cab, Sandy Kydd low loader

I bought this from KJB Models as Hattons seemed to be incapable in ordering this from Oxford despite a number of e-mail requesting them to add to their website, noting it is now up as a pre-order. Worth considering KJB Models for Oxford items as their prices are very reasonable.

I had NSCA004 Scania 'Knights of Old' Curtainside on my Hattons wishlist. When I recently had enough money to push the button I found the message "This item has sold out and we are unfortunately unable to obtain any additional stock of this particular product". And yet several days later I was able to order two direct from OD, no problem. :hmmm:

Photos of the following new releases

Green Goddess
Jaguar XF - BRG
VW Beetle - Black
Hillman Imp - Tangerine
Discovery 4 - Ipanema Sand

All seem nice models and in scale (although I have not checked)
Painting is good but metallic finishes, as usual, not as sharp as Tomytec cars, the Green Goddess does have the issue with the areas around the windscreen not being painted but surprisingly it is not noticeable on the model itself, seems to show up more on photos

There is a new announcement in the next few days. It will not be an interactive event on Facebook this time, due to various pressures on time at Oxford and Hornby. Probably for the best because last time some people were quite insulting to the Oxford Team simply because their area of interest was not strongly favoured. There are also some strictures on Oxford making announcements on a private site, in view of their proximity to Hornby, a PLC with a 49% holding in Oxford’s parent.

Insults to the Oxford team because releases didn't fit in with their wishes/desire...some people need to get a grip on things, seriously!

I am often agog at some of the design teams choices, but hey, it's a hobby not life threatening!!!

That is very sad to hear, I have listened in as it were for most of the last few years. It was a great exercise in communication and gave a little something special to end user instead of the usual suspects retailers and stock market.

I find it strange that any one should wish to insult their design team as they are the only company who regularly supply us with model vehicles in our scale in a fully finished form . Their choices have some times been odd but have always been interesting

Mike

Any idea on when new tooling will be announced?

The re-colours are of limited use as very specific to regions

It does seem odd that Oxford release so many buses that just seem to sit on the shelves in model shops, the lorries would appear to be far better sellers.

Always considered the tractors as poor models as they are far too chunky

Unfortunately again a somewhat underwhelming selection!

Fire Engine and Berlin Landy are okay for me but I agree on the tractors far to chunky, buses I just don't get, always available. On Facebook I asked about new tooling for N gauge next and was promised some, so next announcement is in Feb from memory so we will wait and see. I also said that I didn't understand some of their choices but there are the experts.

From comments from Eloise Davies (Oxford MD) there will be N new tooling announced in January. She said that Oxford are still in catch up mode, but new tools in all scales are on the way.

There was only one new tool in total announced - a Mercedes Sprinter van in 1/76 scale.

She responded to some gripes about the quantity of N items, and was positive about the part N plays in their range, whilst admitting that the market is much smaller than in the larger scales, which appeal more to collectors.

I agree about the tractors - but they sell very well as do the agricultural trailers. Some of the early buses are not very good, but the more recent ones are much better and there have been re-runs of the standard livery red New Routemaster.

I think that Oxford go through phases and fashions with some markets, so there was a big range of 1/76 fire engines, whereas now there are no new introductions. Hopefully N will be a fashion in 2020, but one that is sustained.

Like everybody I feel that some of their model choices are a bit weird, but then others love their off-the-wall choices, and think what I like is weird. :-)

Some re-liveried Oxford Diecast items have been listed in the Arnold new items leaflet.

HN6424    2 x 2 axle flat wagons with 4 Army Land Rovers – Spanish National Railways RENFE
HN6434   2 x 2 axle flat wagons with 4 BAOR Land Rovers – German National Railways DB

Food Trailers

HN7001   Crκpes
HN7002   Bratwurst
HN7003   Pizza
HN7004   Paella

They are listed with images on pages 21, 22 and 24 of the Arnold new items catalogue.

The Arnold branded items have arrived recently. I couldn't resist the food trailers which are a colourful collection well suited for catering at an outside transport or music event. They are billed as N scale on the Arnold wrap, and are the same casting as used for the wide range of British versions. The Bob's Fish & Chips van is a modified burger van using some stickers I made for Bob Tidbury.

I find it strange that any one should wish to insult their design team as they are the only company who regularly supply us with model vehicles in our scale in a fully finished form . Their choices have some times been odd but have always been interesting
Not strange at all. People regularly post insulting stuff re manufacturers and model shops on the various model railway forums and are rarely pulled up on it by moderators. Only a couple of weeks ago someone on this forum accused Dapol of being 'liars' for not delivering on their production schedule. As standards are allowed to slip then it is no wonder that certain types feel emboldened to let rip up, as in the example above.

It's a massive shame that the screw-post is smack in the middle of the sunroof on the Discovery. :(

I think it needs a bit of Tamiya Smoke paint (X-19) to tint it like the real vehicle.

A bit of full size vehicle tint would do the job too. Enough to do the side windows too here.  :)

It'll make the sunroof leak just like on the real thing!

The screw post does seem more noticeable in the black Discovery than the sand coloured version.

The Exol tanker is very nice, just looks better than the Stobbart and BP versions
