Title: TINGS 2019, 14-15 September
Post by: Railwaygun on September 12, 2018, 11:23:35 AM
for anyone on here interested
a statement from Meridienne Exhibitions:-
As I am sure you are aware Saturday was very busy and our attendance was up by 6% on last year. We had a live radio interview with Coventry & Warwickshire radio on the Friday morning and we believe this, together with our marketing campaign helped the attendance. I would also like to thank you for all the effort you put in with advertising the event clearly this has had an affect on visitor numbers as well.

The dates for the 2019 show have been confirmed as the 14th & 15th September again at the Warwickshire Event Centre.  Our promotional leaflets will be sent out to you within the next couple of months.
All good news on the popularity of 'N ' but note the date change for next year.

Is TINGS September or November next year.  :confusedsign:

If I haven't succeeded in changing the thread title, please could someone do this to avoid confusion????

You can only change it on your posts - @Railwaygun (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=941) needs to edit his for the whole thread to update.

Glad it is still September, two weeks before Warley would be madness!

Great news that attendance was up. There will always be some negative comments about a big show. Whatever people say TINGS is currently the most important N gauge event of the year. It's not perfect but it is popular and deservedly so.

There is of course nothing to stop any of us creating a better N gauge show. I know I couldn't do better so I am grateful that this show exists.

Tank is doing exactly that with "N Gauge South East" though.

Yes ,Watch out for the adverts for the E S N G /N GAUGE FORUM SHOW IN APRIL NEXT YEAR , I THINK T I N G S MIGHT HAVE an  EQUAL , IF ALL GOES TO PLAN this show will have the same number of layouts but I donít think the same number of trade stands   Ray and I of B H Enterprises wish the organisers Tank and I believe Snitchthebudgie all the best and I am really looking forward to the show.

Thanks, Bob for the plug!

I will add that we're trying not to use the words 'rival' or 'better'.  I hope that NGSE will complement TINGS and the other 'N' gauge shows around - there should be room for us all, and if 'N' is seen as a growing gauge, perhaps the manufacturers will consider shrinking a few of their 'OO' models.

For myself, I enjoyed TINGS again, and hope to get there next year.  I always come away with a few winges, but also usually with a lighter wallet.

One comment I have seen on a couple of threads, and I would echo, is an overdose of continuous run/through station models on show.  These do make ideal exhibition layouts, but perhaps the more limited range of 'N' models tend to make them a little 'samey'.

I do confess that despite my support for NGSE and TINGS I do agree with one commentator that multi-scale shows are often more interesting.  The trade may not be as specialist or good, but I often get the best layout inspiration from other scales.

Cheers, Jon

Good news! Can I put in a plea for better catering than at TINGS? The queue to even get a cup of coffee was horrendous every time I looked (admittedly around lunchtime Saturday). Eventually I gave up and found a cafe nearby on my way home. I'd also like to put in a word for the trade stands, especially the smaller, specialist retailers. I love to see their stuff "in the flesh" that otherwise I might miss. The internoodle is all very well but you've got to know it's there to look for it. What probably isn't needed is multiple stands all filled with rows of Dapol and Bachmann boxes all at similar prices, but I guess if you're a show organiser you're just glad to sell the space. Getting the balance right must be a challenge.

I've modified the title in every post in the thread that stated 'November' so hopefully all will be well going forward.
On a secondary note perhaps we could ask all members to post in this thread rather than start separate threads like 'a bitter experience' and 'a personal opinion' etc etc.
Historically TINGS has always generated multiple threads but it would be easier for admin if it was all in the one place.

Maybe (for the future) the Admins could create two threads - All Things TINGS Good and All Things TINGS Bad and let the posts be made under there rather than everyone starting their own - unless it was something really specific...

Or maybe 3 - TINGS:- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
As for the latter I'd better not be there for the mugshot :-[ :dighole:

So would I - Liverpool is a lot easier for me to get to, either by plane or car.  As an aside, going back to the post by NPN, (#14) for brevity could we not have 'All TINGS good', 'All TINGS bad' and 'All TINGS Ugly'?   (Sorry, was thinking out loud).  :)

Yes B H Enterprises have been to every one of these shows ,allways busy both days ,It gets a bit hectic around at least three of the stands and busy around the rest .
There have been some fantastic layouts and in my own opinion a few duff layouts where nothing seemed to move ,if they had problems it would have been nice if they had a note up saying sorry technical problems .
I think itís a really good show over all and well worth a visit ,ITS better than the N E C  again only my own opinion .

Hopefully the N soc stand will be uneventful but have many offers - Tim knows all about it!

@Bealman (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=255)  The Anoraks Anonymous stand is known for having a large and wide selection of fair priced 2nd hand gear, so there's usually a throng!  I tend to dip in and out in the quieter periods of the show looking for oddments in the clearance boxes.  Picked up some bargain spares last year.

I'd heard rumours of Kato doing an 800, on the basis they were one of the few companies that could pay royalties to Hornby to get around the daft Hitachi licencing (or take them to court over it), plus it has a degree of commonality with their "White Sonic" (IIRC) EMU.

Could be very interesting.

All booked for myself and the eldest boy, same B&B as previous two years (has had exhibitors staying at it both times too), same outward bound train from Marylebone on Friday evening (18.15 Kidderminster) which is 68 hauled, and my son will be especially pleased to find out that as the Chiltern main line is closed on Sunday we are returning via Coventry from where he gets a ride on a Pendolino (i'm not bothered tbh, I find them a little claustrophobic but comfortable enough).

I just printed my ticket out, and intend to go on Sunday.

I don't handle crowds very well, but Sundays are from past experience, manageable for me.  I get very claustrophic.

I'm assuming the usual backpack wearing, sweaty, "anything that isn't 1950s steam must be crap" brigade will be there, but I don't let them upset me.

Very much looking forward to it, having missed last years' event.

to quote ďthe usual backpack wearing, sweaty, "anything that isn't 1950s steam must be crap" brigade will be there ÖĒ

the fact is shows like this can be busy is one argument. people tend to pay a visit whichever day suits them and their needs. the usual backpack wearing sweaty brigade may be valid but people like yo buy bargains, items, their needs. a polite excuse me i find or a tap on the shoulder works and if i see something i like i place my bag in front of me,  or just ask the person whose backpack is  in my way excuse me. as for "anything that isn't 1950s steam must be crap" brigade  - i model 70s - 90s each to their own, its a label. i began to like steam layouts / steam because its the transition era, railway history and

a preference. there are the modern enthusiasts / opeators. its more to do with the quality of the layout argument, if presented welll , stock runs, locos runs, operators are willing to speak and share in their model / hobby - thats what catches my attention / interest. this is no editorial

but each to their own. some love modern, some prefer transition period, some pre 1948, we have to be tolerant, help each other, share ideas. hope helps

I bet there'll be many visitors present when Mr Kato arrives. It'll be the hottest event of the year in N scale.
However I'm not likely to make it to TINGS this time but please keep us all updated!

For the first time in years I'm able to make TINGS.

Who's going on what days? Is @dannyboy (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4209) going? I need a word with 'im!  ;D

I had no idea this would happen, but I'm going back to the UK on the 12th for a bereavement/memorial on the 13th, and I think I could make a trip to TINGS early on Sunday the 15th.

i've never been - would a couple of hours be enough to at least get a flavor for the event? I can't spend the whole day, but if I get there at opening time would it make the drive from Southampton worth it? Also, if anyone else from the forum is there, is there a "Meet & Greet" spot? I'm an NGF member, do they have a stand?

So many questions ...

N-Train should be in it's usual place, but without Electra this year. Adam made an announcement to say he had a previous arrangement for the weekend.

I am still recovering from my recent operation, so please be gentle with me and my wife Dawn.

There will be some new announcements...................

Plus, I will be have a Red Spot BGOF Sale of my old 'retail' products and some other selected items. First come, first served.

I'll be there with my layout. Running with 1963 stock one day and 1968 stock the other. For most exhibitions its just a matter of giving all the locos a quick service about a week before the exhibition. For TINGS exhibitors need to also make sure they have a supply of drinks and a sandwich prepared - but never mind I'm happy to be part of TINGS.

Lets hope its a great show, as usual, with a good attendance. Say "Hi" when you get to Little Aller Junction (stand J). It will be either me or my brother running the layout. We take it in turns and sometimes we run it together.

I went in 16, and was there for about 5 hrs, you could just spend a couple of hours if you don't spend too long looking at each layout. If I was back in the UK and only had a few hours to spare I would make the journey. you wont be disappointed.

Thanks, Andy. I think I can do that if I leave early for the journey up and arrive at opening time. I'm thinking I could be there until around 1PM and get back to Winchester no later than 3PM. Does that sound about right? That gives me three hours at the expo and no grumpy family as I'll be back in plenty of time for cocktails and dinner. As long as the A30/A34/M3 co-operates :)

That's fingers double-crossed! I've been on the A34 stood standing still and found when I'd crawled 10 miles it was a guy who lost a wheel off his caravan that he hadn't taken on the road for 20 years. There's no mitigation for stupid.

I find Google maps is by far the best at seeing jams and finding alternative routes. My built in Garmin based satnav is pants compared to Google. If I really want to know the best route I tend to plug my phone into the car display. I think you can do this with most cars nowadays. It worked for me when I recently had a very base model Astra on holiday.

So, I've had a conversation with SWMBO, and decided that we'll both visit TINGS on Sunday morning, length of stay TBD. If any of you folk are around, we'd love to "put a name to the face". Jill has old friends in the Birmingham area, so it might be a late lunch with them, but I think we can swing a few quality hours at the Expo.

I've never been to one of these things before - any "survival" advice gratefully received!

I'm not spending any money though - he said, feebly.

I've attended several big shows over the years including UK's biggest, the annual Warley show at the National Exhibition Centre, near Birmingham Airport/International railway station, and even then spent no more than about two hours each per venue.
Sometimes I haven't spent money at shows except for refreshments.
Probably best to prioritise which layouts you want to see if information has been posted about them.

Over 90 layouts and about 150 trade stands in 2 hours - that's going some! Ignoring  trade exhibitors that works out at 1.3 minutes per layout including the time it takes to walk from one layout to the next.

I last attended Warley in 2017 and concentrated on seeing the layouts, albeit briefly viewing each of them.
I prioritised matters by skipping many of the trade stands, except for buying paint from Precision Models because otherwise my modelling would have been delayed due to lack of authentic GWR buildings paint and a pack of OO limited edition collectible wagons from Warley MRC's stand. However I made a beeline for Revolution Trains and asked questions about their (then forthcoming) Pendolino.

If nothing on a layout moves in a space of 1 minute then move on - Simples :D
That'll save a lot of time.
Sadly the forum group mug shot usually occurs early afternoon and that's where to put names to faces. Maybe whoever is organising the Sunday one could make it earlier?

If you order in advance, traders are usually happy for you to collect from their stand. ( Osbornes, DM- Toys are helpful)

I'm going first thing on Sunday, hopefully I'll see @LASteve (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6889) , he's hoping to be there.

I'll be there as long as the traffic co-operates. We probably won't be there at photo-op time, but we'll see. We're meeting some friends in the afternoon near Oxford.

If any of you see a 5' tall American/Japanese lady, and a big white guy at least twice her size, that's us :) Come and say hello :)

Managed to see the 56xx running on the Revolution stand. Beautiful model. I thought that someone into sound (I think it was Legomanbiffa) was a little rude to the designer Sam, saying ďwell I guess it was ok to be Chinese (!)Ē and then berated him about not designing in a next 18 socket.
Oh well you canít please Everyone.
Missed Ben but saw Mike, and Paul Churchill. There must have been a murder somewhere!
The Revolution announcements have already appeared here, but there is nothing like seeing something in the flesh. The 320/321 looked good. Better than the Farish 318/319(?) which looks a bit too flat nosed to me. Roll on the 313/314 and the 128 parcels DMU, and the cemflows.
Joined the Dapol fan club again to get a green 50007. Rule 1 but the other 50s I have bought have superb electrics and are super runners.
One or two decent offers and I did spend some money, but it was my birthday! I ran out of cash before I could buy some more VEAs.
My worst experience was on arrival. I needed a loo break and was standing at the metal urinal when this tall chap peed directly onto the steel at 90 degrees so it splattered everywhere including over my bare arm. He was oblivious, but he was so tall he probably didnít see me.

Best

Had a good chat with Ray at BH Enterprises this morning about coach sides, hopefully this side of Christmas!!!
Met Fraser from GFB designs had a good run through of the Signatrak Ace2 controller, wonderfully simple bit of kit which were pretty sure will be our controller for the layout.
Spent a few quid with Nick at N Brass, only 1 item out of 45 that he didn't have in stock so plenty to see me through winter now!
Saw Ben at revolutioN and although I knew no Regent Class B tanks are left seeing 2 triple packs of Esso ones there for sale would of made my day had they been Regents. None of the new stuff for us thankfully for the wallet!!
Got a good discount from Plus Daughters stand presumably for paying cash  amazing how many people were complaining about stalls not taking cards!!
Bargain of a useful book from Steve Currinn so no excuses for my weathering of wagons now!
Managed to get a NGS Stove R from The Wagon Yard
A good haul of triple packs from Anoraks Anonymous

11 years after since our first and last attendance we managed to get what we went out for, missed the forum photograph, wed left for lunch but definitely worth the trip so maybe we wont wait so long before going back!!!!

Yup. Spoke to him on his stand, and met up again at the ice cream van outside as we both tucked into a 99. Heís a very polite gentleman. Judging by his questions, heís trying to better understand the British N market. He seemed impressed by TINGS. He wouldnít be drawn on future plans, other than he had some. The 800 series will not have a decoder socket, and as per other Kato models, will need a special pcb fitting.

Kato models are always easy to add DCC as they use can motors, but you do need to solder in the wired type of decoder.

Easy is relative. In this day and age a new ďall singing all dancingĒ model with no native DCC compatibility is madness IMO. But thatís for the 800 thread!

I would have said that a 6 pin socket is absolutely the correct call. Sonic are to be applauded for managing to keep the price of this model down to something affordable without (from what I have read and seen of the EP) compromising on the specification. To provide for a simple motor function with no directional lighting and no plug and play sound provision why on earth is a Next 18 decoder necessary? Anyone wishing to attempt a sound fit would surely remove the socket to add space and hard-wire a sound decoder anyway?

Yes Chris good to chat. It was good to have the space to stop and chat. I felt the show was so much more comfortable than my last visit many years ago - the aisles seemed wider, having all those roller-doors open kept the air fresh and cool.

Right

Typing this half asleep so may be even more nonsense than usual....but want to get thoughts out now.

That was certainly my best TINGs as a visitor (with NGS doesnít count, thatís just a boys weekend) and way up in my list of best ever model railway shows.

Spoke to so many people including layout operators (all happy without fault, special mention to the fab guys on Brook Lane who let me play), traders, the NGS mob, manufactures (Andy assures me Dapol ARE doing the 59 in N) and of course my fellow forum members.

Met Mr Sutton again, day was of course better for it. @37058 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=90) , Sutton St Anneís and the stock do you credit sir.

@Ben A (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=94) , @red_death (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=246) , @acko22 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4166) all on form on Revolution. VEAs home with me and samples of KFA, Sturgeons looking great. Nice chat with Ben about the challenges of getting this far and oooohhh come on the 92s! Could I find home for a 56XX? More than likely.

Fiona over at DCC supplies kept me a perfect example of 50015 (which was tested by the NGS boys and I was so happy with it I went and found it a train to haul).

The C-Rail pocket wagons look wonderful, canít wait for mine to be posted and got some new containers for those and the aforementioned KFAs.

And @Bob T (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=261) arranged the mug shot. Omar took one with me in and then we swopped so he could be in one. They will appear when Omar gets home after the weekend.

Took many photos of superb layouts and the (surprisingly comprehensive) samples of new stuff from Farish. The latter photos have been shared on the Forum Facebook page but are available if others want them.

Finally, the obligatory photo of my new toys:

All I can say is thank god for the NGF, YouTube and Facebook! From the get go at 10am I didn't get the leave the layout until around 14.30 and that was basically for a toilet break and some grub! It's been such a busy day with non stop operating and chatting. Was certainly a joyful atmosphere, which makes a change at shows these days... Also it's been an absolute pleasure to meet so many of you from here, but I must apologise if I came across a little rude at times when trying to talk, but I had to keep the trains moving for punters. Sadly I cannot multitask :smiley-laughing: The joys of a one man band

I'll look forward to watching all the highlights on YouTube etc and of course enjoying the photos on here.

I hope you all had a wonderful day and got what you wanted, whether it be bargains, or new releases.

Thank you one and all who came and said hello at Sutton St Annes - I hope you all enjoyed it.

Doh! Very early on, I was stood at the end of Sutton St. Annes but there was (understandably) a bit of a crowd. So I moved on intending to return later - it was (weirdly for a model show,) a very relaxed atmosphere and one never had the normal show feeling of 'No, I've managed to force myself within sight of this layout and I'm not yielding now'! But, doh! My dodgy memory strikes again. I forgot to go back to Sutton St. Annes. :-[

Some layouts I did see...

As far as James Street goes we had a bit of an iffy day with niggly problems but still seemed to keep a good croaks entertained. Thanks to Colin, Ben and Sam for allowing us to run the 56xx, firstly on a small freight and then on s longer coal train. It pulled over 30 wagons up s 1:100 and ran very well with no noticeable noise. There were lots of photos and videos taken so hopefully some will get uploaded here or on YouTube at some point. Looking forward to tomorrow....

Yes! I did get to see James Street. :bounce: This was my first time seeing it live. Wow! :jawdropping: The many pictures I've seen of it just don't go anywhere close to conveying the majasty of this layout!

Don't know if I captured RevolutioN's 56xx - these taken ~12:50...

I'll be making sure I book the time off for next year.

Hello all,

Good to see people at TINGS.  Thanks to those who have posted photos so far.

I did miss a couple of visitors to our stand as I spent some time with Sam (Mr Sonic) observing the working 56xx sample on the wonderful James Street and would like to thank the operators for allowing us to run the model.

The chassis is smooth and powerful though with the hubbub of the show even on the small oval of track on the Revolution stand it's not really possible to judge how quiet it is, though there was no obvious growling!

Sam will be at the show again today and is very much enjoying meeting British modellers and listening to their interests and wants.

I have some photos of the model on James Street that I will post in the 56XX thread asap.

Cheers

Ben A.

I had a very enjoyable 3 hours or so at the show yesterday and, as others have said, it felt quite pleasant inside with plenty of room in the aisles etc. Some very nice layouts there. Personally, not a fan of James Street..I appreciate there is some high standard modelling but I think it is far too big and there's too much going on. It lacks the 'intimacy' of the smaller layouts. I thought Brook Lane was brilliant and  I was also drawn (on numerous occasions) to Branksdowne Junction and Leonard.

Also, couldn't get away from that Kato stuff..was on virtually every trade stand! Can't see what all the fuss is about. Too much like settrack and the built-in ballast bed is not very good or realistic. Stick to PECO..

Title: Re: TINGS 2019, 14-15 September - TAKE LOTS OF CASH
Post by: RailGooner on September 15, 2019, 08:49:39 AM
If intending to shop, take lots of cash! I was surprised how many trade stands couldn't take cards. There's an ATM in the main hall that charges £1.85 per transaction. At ~12.00 noon, it ran out while I was trying to withdraw £100 and could only give me £70 - which was probably a blessing in disguise! :-[ I think it got reloaded fairly quickly.

BTW this is the ATM's swansong, it will not be there from next year!

At one point and over the course of several minutes, my phone went from full bars to no service and back to full bars. All while stood on the same spot. :worried:

I just want to echo some of the sentiment already expressed here. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time yesterday. Got a few bargains, glad to see bachman selling off some returned stock again, and was generally impressed with the standard of modelling on the layouts.
I was very impressed with James st I must say.
I salivated at the Revolution class 56xx on display and eagerly look forward to the release.
It wasn't too crowded or pushy I felt. Roll on next year!

Very good show, seemed to be less pure box shifters than usual or was it they had more second hand to balance their offerings.

Regardless second hand was much better and from multiple vendors.

They could have added a few more stands but I think that's a sign of the times and economy.

Revolution were in good form with the designer form Sonic (nice guy) answering questions.

I was also pleased to see the new pocket wagons from C-Rail on sale.

.. in the form of product on Gaugemaster's retail stand...

Did anyone see Mr Kato there?

That seems an epic own goal straight off the bat if I may mix my sporting metaphors!

:hmmm: Giving this some thought, it makes very sound business sense if... Kato plan that the 800 series will utilise an existing chassis/motor/electronics with just a new tooled body. This would allow Kato to test the water of British Outline N Gauge for the minimum investment/risk. IMHO having to deal with Kato's proprietary DCC chips is a small price to pay for an otherwise top quality model of this prototype.

Well, it was my first TINGS, we are usually away about now, and i was suitably impressed.

Picked up a trio of Dapol wagons on the way in, and the nice chap at GraModels had found some Cromwell kits for me, so that was fortuitous. Bob and Ray at B.H.Enterprises helped me out with some bits and bobs along with N Brass.

I finally got to see Little Aller and spent some time chatting, it's a cracking little layout with some nice little touches like the 'Do Not Press' button. RevolutioN's products never disappoint, good to see their crew again and had an enlightening chat with Ben which has given me quite an insight into how product ideas do or don't make the cut.

Some fantastic layouts, James Street never fails to impress, and they were happy to have a chat although I didn't get to speak to Martyn unfortunately. There was some brilliant small layouts as well, just proving that size doesn't matter.

Met some fellow Forum members for Bob's photo shoot, nice to meet you Gary and Omar!

A final shout out to @LASteve (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6889) , and his charming wife, who apparently, having walked round the show, thinks he needs a larger layout. How lucky can some people be! Nice to meet you both. Happy travels.

All in all an enjoyable day.

Nah, we didnít meet, I was doing my best to up the idiot quota :D

I really enjoyed it, nicely quiet today I thought, was able to wander around and get close to virtually everything without having to have sharp elbows. James Street is certainly formidable, I do quite like it I must say, despite not being my era.

Mercigís ROG 37s tempt me every year, my resolve is certainly weakening!  :worried:

Always good to catch up with the Revolution guys, sorry I missed the group photo, wasnít entirely sure where/when in the end.

Madness that the place doesnít have a better phone signal and/or WiFi for the traders. Cash is dying, that must hurt sellers Iím sure. Picked up a few bits at Dapol mainly because I felt I needed to spend some money, and it was a good price on the MJAs. Keep thinking about another rake of the Revolution HOAs, Benís reminder of the looming deadline is nagging at me!

The chap over toward the restaurant selling off his own stock had some stellar deals on really hard to find items, luckily Iíd missed his EWS TEAs and couldnít justify a full set of VTG ones!

Saturday afternoon at TINGS and of course that was the day the mobile decided to play up, so no pictures.  :censored:

Always great to see layouts that have been in magazines. Rightly or not, I felt fewer of the layouts on show were steam this year.

And the Kato brand was much more in evidence. Retailers must be shifting the track, or they wouldn't have given it so much space on their stands. Maybe Mr Kato is seeing rising sales figures in the UK.

Best news for me: Revolution researching a class 313/314 EMU, as shown in a first class leaflet.  :claphappy:

Well I have to say I was glad I went. Better than last year overall for me (were the aisles a bit wider or was there fewer people?). I don't often stop to chat generally as I don't like interrupting but did have a chat with Anthony on Sutton St Annes very early on, an interesting one with the gentleman running one smaller layout who showed me how he'd built the layout using two trestle tables on top of one another (I think it was Cucknoe), this only started because my lad (who's 10), tried to have a sneaky look at the fiddle yard, and he invited us round to have a look! Plus a few short conversations about buildings on some others (especially Blue is the Colour). Also good to chat to Mike @red_death (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=246) about the 321, judging by that sample, my money is safe  :claphappy:, although please could we have a 315 too??? pretty please??? Was very pleased to see liveried samples of the long awaited Mk2 DBSOs!

I like a lot of the layouts, Sutton St Annes, Dentdale, Loch Tat, James Street, Leigh St George, Blue is the Colour, Little Aller (my boy loved the sound effects, and I enjoyed the point where they got 4 trains running without missing each other at the junc!!), Annston, Low Yard, Sketchford. All for different reasons.

Didn't buy as much as some, 3 of the new Farish Blue & Grey Weathered ScotRail mk1s, plus some bits of @Bob Tidbury (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=3442) & Ray at BHE. Have to say I was impressed at how well sorted those TPM plastic inlays were, but shocked to be offered a second (bigger) crate to rummage through!! Found what I wanted though :)

Missed the photo call as I had to get the boy fed and watered. We managed to stay until 4pm by which time we were both shattered....good time though :)

Was it me or did there seem to be less Layouts this year than last??

However I think the quality was much better than last year, only let down by that abomination that is Sutton St.Annes by @37058 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=90) !! Only joking Anthony it's a great layout  :P :P :P

Certainly were very few 'bargains' about, in fact I didn't buy any rolling stock this year, just some wheels from Bob at @NTrain (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=153) some GPS22.5 Bogies for my Warwells & Warflats from the NGS stand and a Book about Diesels & Electrics in the 70's & 80's. Was looking for some Farish/Kernow UCV China Clay Wagons, but after a long conversation with Steve Farmer it looks like I may not need them after all, as it seems that the UCV's very rarely ventured out of Cornwall, so for the Clayliner I actually need OWV's which I think are on 10' Roller Bearing chassis, anyway I digress.

I also seemed to spend a lot of my time nattering to friends old & new, I didn't manage to get an awful lot done on the DEMU stand but had a great couple of days with Jo Alder & Stu Wright.

So hopefully we'll all met up again same place next year.

Cheers

Neal.

Mercigís ROG 37s tempt me every year, my resolve is certainly weakening!  :worried:

I made the proprietor laugh by commenting on how having 4 such works of art on display is just plain showing off really  ;D

One day I will have a piece from Mercig, hopefully before he retires!

Itís one thing for the proprietor to have so many, you want to ask @Cazadoom (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=565) how many heís got!  they are absolutely stunning, just one of those models which really epitomises Ianís skill, particularly when you see all the subtleties of the different ones.

Hi All,

Well it was a good weekend seeing the same OLD faces and meeting new ones if not a little knackering just ask @Only Me (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1328) since it seems we have a reputation to up hold!  :beers:

I had a chance to flirt round and look at the layouts and other stalls picking up some of my wanted list on the way round (word of advice make sure you use the solo account and not the joint account if your other half is like mine  )

@Calnefoxile (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=619) please take that picture down this is a family forum you three look like something off crime watch  :P

@Cazadoom (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=565) you know I am going to get one of them 37s if you keep trying to upset me!

Apparently  some members missed the mug shots as they said there wasnít an announcement made ,I did get at least two on Saturday and Sunday but I admit that their `TANOY SYSTEM IS CRAP,  I couldnít even hear the safety announcement they make every morning before the public get in properly  .That has been the problem every year that Iíve tried to organise it I also put the time and place on the Forum and on the Facebook page ,
I canít do much more ,also of course a lot of members were operating their layouts and so couldnít leave .
Maybe NEXT YEAR someone else could TRY and organise a photo shoot of operators before or after the show .
Nice to meet up with those that did manage to make it though .

There were definitely a couple but they were more "mnnrmfnr nfmrmrnnrer mmmffdntr, hmnkkckmr fner", you know, 1970s BR station tannoy announcements..... :confused1:

I knew from Bob's posts it was 1.30pm, but as I mentioned upthread, the boy decided he needed food and a break and so we were otherwise engaged....

On Saturday I was there from opening until shortly after the photos. I heard half of one announcement about the photos and that was so mangled that I thought that the meeting point had been changed from near the NGS stand to beneath the restaurant area! Luckily, when I found no-one there, I decided to look near the NGS stand and ended up following Bob there.

For the future, I'll know to ignore announcements and stick to the published plan.

Chris , I "blame" it on the thunder storms !!  - the electical storms must have affected the PA.  Funnily in the empty hall on Friday at 08.30 it was fine but the N show has to be the nosiest show  I do and the volume of  the noise did vary - much quieter at lunchtime but 10.00 - 12.30 main hall it was loud with chatter and the odd "poop - parp" from  diesels.  Sunday was more "civilsed."

I will talk to the boss about PA.

First TINGS, and this year only due to serendipity that we were able to attend. I did meet a few of the crew, @emjaybee (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5604) came up and introduced himself in line before the show opened (by the way, get pre-paid tickets, the line is MUCH shorter!), we tracked down @Southerngooner (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=3680) on Saxon Street and Chris on Little Aller. Sunday morning seemed to be pretty quiet so the exhibitors had time to chat. We enjoyed talking to the owners/operators of the aforementioned James Street and Little Aller, as well as Two Seasons, Waterfall Junction, Marx Engels Platz, Nempnet Thrubwell and others. Ian from James Street was a veritable fount of knowledge and tips.

Very impressive array of models from Mercig. I didn't spend any money, because I can claim the 20% VAT back if I buy online and have it shipped, I still save on paying full retail at the show.

Jill enjoyed herself too, and as @emjaybee (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5604) reported, she told me "you need a bigger layout" so that was some surprise!

A lot of the modeling was truly inspirational. Back to the track plan drawing board.

May I log my comments about T.I.N.G.S? - and I feel strongly about it .

I thought it was first class - really too notch. Variety and quality of layouts from the saliver-leakingly, jaw dropping affairs to my favourite sort of layout (the smaller, achievable and therefore most inspirational). Traders and the conditions at 'the front line' mosh pit when you can see the whites of traders' eyes were seemingly civilised and seemly. And now I'm, personally speaking, at the stage where N gauge locomotives are actually turning wheels in my loft, I had reason  to put my hand in my pocket on few occasions (but I'm not daft enough to judge a show in whether I could find a particular item).

I've been to four of the last five and this one, super atmosphere, superb collection and variety of layouts I just let wash over me. I entered at 10.15 on Saturday, left at 4 and could've happily soaked it in for longer. Layouts Annston (aye up Martin!), Loch Tat, Riddle to Old Town, Porquoi Pas and Bercy, Sutton St Anne's, Leigh St George, Hookhill Viaduct...oh and many more were really wonderful for many different reasons.

Lovely weather helps too. Congrats to all responsible for putting this show on from a very happy punter.

I am glad to say that Mr Kato is now a fully paid up member of the N Gauge Society, following this weekend. A very nice gentleman.
Thanks to all who came to the Society stand and had such kind things to say about our efforts, on the Stand, the Journal, and Society products. And for your financial contributions to the success of the Society.
For those who are not up to date our Display Stand Manager Tim Hitch has, following a check up on Monday (yesterday), had to go into Hospital today for an operation on a detached retina and will be out of action for at least four weeks. More news on social media.
The Hunslets are coming! Yes they are...but not quite yet.

TINGS 2019 - what a great time was had by all!  In the first instance though I apologise for the delay in getting pictures of the NGF meet-ups out.  I start with pictures from the Saturday meet-up in this post and will post Sunday pictures in a subsequent post.  Please feel free to tag away!  I am in blue in the 3rd picture - as the photographer I am unavoidably absent from the others.  I also seem unable to rotate the 4th picture - any help would be appreciated.

TINGS was great fun this year and, above all, I got to meet Mr Kato who attended both days and joined the N Gauge Society on Sunday 15 September.  I was on the Society stand, at least when not lightening my pocket at some of the trade stands!  Oh well, such is life.  The quality of the layouts was outstanding with James Street in particular earning many rave reviews.  I now share the pictures from the meet-up on Sunday 15 September along with a few from the NGS stand.  As always, plug away!  Note the presence of Tim Hitch (Mirlees) on the stand and Bob Tidbury in the meeting mugshots.  I am not in any of these.

This year's TINGS proved rather expensive for me,  and not because I bought much.

My car broke down on the way home on the M1 then 3 days later a speeding ticket dropped through the door, somehow managed to do 70 in a 60 zone again on the M1

Interesting point to note, the online photograph showed my car under the gantry showing the speed display, given that the speed camera would have been mounted on the gantry, either directly over the lane or to one side, i wonder were the camera was hidden that took the photograph?

Still first ticket in 45 years of driving is not that bad.

The two pictures of the stand: both show Tim Hitch of course, presently recovering from his eye operation so looks at present a little battle scarred in comparison with the photo. In the first photo of the stand stood next to him is the new N Gauge Society Chairman Philip Griffin in glasses and a red shirt and in the second photo in front of the counter in the blue shirt is yours truly.
Diane Tape features in the main pictures stood next to Skyline - Adam Williams. Adrian Brimble (owner and operator of Letherbridge) also attends in a black shirt & cheerful expression.

Skyline on the left then Ditape next to her  is a member who I gave a card to at the Conway show and goes by the name of Her up North ,nice to see you again Joan .
Perhaps some members are Camera  shy or were  put off by me being there ,
I do have that effect on some people but I am what I am .
Any body not named can you let us know who you are itís allways nice to put names to faces .

I didn't honestly look at what time I left, so I either missed it by not noticing the time, or by having left!

Cazadoom on the right of the Sunday photos too, in the black polo shirt and shorts.

Ha,
Now I know why I have had a head ache today , I have been spun and left hanging out to dry - cold and sunny in Brum today !!
Good to see pics up and even a kind comment, thanks.

Lots on the way for 2020. Just one day I might get my layout in the show...
Hope to see some of you at Warley show 23 and 24th November
Robert

Sorry Robert but the Warley show is way out of my price bracket  ,what with petrol , parking and entrance money then food and drinks plus  I would have to bribe Val somehow to borrow her car ,and when we used to  go with the stand I personally found it far to crowded and full of rude people pushing and shoving and as Iím virticaly challenged I was allways pushed to the back and hardly saw any of the layouts and very rarely managed to get near to any of the bargains ,
Even Ally Pally and Stevenage are more civilised and of course TINGS is far better.
