Title: New 10mm / N scale armour / vehicles
Post by: Railwaygun on March 09, 2018, 06:39:11 PM
https://www.butlersprintedmodels.co.uk/10/12-mm.html (https://www.butlersprintedmodels.co.uk/10/12-mm.html)

they are 12mm or 1/144 scale, but a push of the button and they could be 1/150??

quality looks good.

Great site.  Disappointed with the look of the Chieftain, what do you think?  Great to see a Centurion AVRE.  Just right for my time period.

They are done on an FDM 3D printer. There may be banding and some stringing unless they are done on a quality machine, or very well set up.

I can only go by what I can see of the photographs and the description of the process.

However, the people involved in this venture are to be applauded for making models available whicj may not have otherwise been done.

Sorry, I meant the shape of the turret itself.  This may be the Mk9/10 variant, and I'm not too clued up on the StillBrew armour.

Thanks for this they look very interesting One of the trains i hope to build you this year was a military one using NGS kits when they are available!  these models look like providing a reasonably priced and varied selection

I assume that the larger tanks would be transported singly on a warwell ?  Might buy i few to see what they are like

The Centurion and Cheiftain would be too wide to carry by rail.

If you are Modelling Germany then the Centurian can be carried by rail but not in the UK,
I believe the LAst UK main Battle tank that could be carried by rail in the UK was the  Comet in use till 1958.

I picked up several Chieftains an FV432s about a year ago. The models are very poor quality and need a lot of work to get them good enough for wagon loads.

I have just acquired a few models from their range and I suggest they have sorted out a few gremlins because the models I have seem far superior to those in your piccie.

I will add a few piccies in a bit when I phone is behaving again. The scorpion is especially neat, perfect for my future military goods when the newer warflat wahgon kit is released.

Best wishes
Simon

I had a look at these yesterday and they are lovely models. Being made of pewter and hollow inside, they're not too heavy either so would work well as trainloads.

A nice Matt finish compared to the gloss of the previous version

I may replace the aerials with cut down track pins

Hi there,

Those are aerials?  I thought they were twin exhaust stacks!

Instead of track pins (which might cause discomfort if the models is clumsily handled later!) have you thought about the bristles from a cheap toothbrush or similar?

Useful models though.

Cheers

Ben A.

I am a keen wargamer as well railways and I just wanted to say that I am enjoying this thread.

Unfortunately, I started collecting 15mm WW2 figures before I knew about 10mm.  The latter fitting with my N gauge passion, especially for the Eastern Front!

The highly detailed, unpainted finished model was produced using the 3D printing process and can be processed and painted with standard tools and colors (eg with Revell Email or Revell Aqua Color). The model weighs only a few grams and is therefore ideally suited for loading on N gauge wagons. The tower of the tank is rotatable.

The T-55 was a standard tank of the Soviet Army and the armies of the Warsaw Pact - such as the GDR's NVA - in the 1960s and 1970s. It is one of the most commonly produced types of tanks in the world, involved in numerous conflicts and triggering significant developments in tank construction.

At Wikipedia there is a detailed documentation of the role model.

This is very true. I've used him for a few bits and pieces. Yes, his models are not the most refined but they are definitely ok from a three foot viewing distance especially if they are on a moving train. But he is very accommodating and will happily print stuff at 1/148th.
I asked him to do some landrover trailers and six months later they appeared. Very good prices too.
Just my experience.

Hi all,

Interesting that those Arnold wagons appear to be loaded with Oxford Diecast land rovers when in theory they're the wrong scale.

I wonder if that's the influence Hornby's MD Lyndon Davies, who was the founder of Oxford Diecast.  Is he still involved in OD?

Cheers

Lyndon Davies is still involved with Oxford. His daughter runs the business, and it is wholly owned by LCD Enterprises which is 51% owned by the Davies family, with Lyndon the biggest shareholder.

Is the vehicle marked  ffw , under the picture of an Austin K2 a Humber.

Difficult to tell from the photo but I have one en route to me. More likely to be a GAZ-AA based on the Ford AA, and built in Russia from 1932 to 1950. But it looks a bit stunted. It is definitely not an Austin K2. I’ll report more when it arrives.

EDIT Had another look and it could be this type of Humber.

The Humber has now arrived. I think that it is 3D SLS printed. The material is grey, and has a slight texture to it.The printing is sharper than my slightly out of focus photos show. A little bit of cleaning up and some green paint will set it up to run in a mini convoy on my Magnorail circuit.  Just a thought though that fire engine red might suit it, as in the movie stills in the post by Runflat on this page:-

http://hmvf.co.uk/topic/27754-how-many-humber-4x4-utilities-are-there/ (http://hmvf.co.uk/topic/27754-how-many-humber-4x4-utilities-are-there/)

Les Freathy’s tome “British Military Trucks of WW2” has a picture of a lookalike 8cwt Humber Heavy Utility 4x4 but without the roof beacon which is particular to one preserved in the Czech Republic. The key dimensions are given as:-

Length 13ft 5in                  Model 30mm = 1:136
Width    6ft 3in                  Model  14mm = 1:136
Height 6ft 4in                    Model  14mm =  1:138

yes - resin only from NGS (so far)

he needs to get a CAD program(mer) ,machine & resin printer, then he would have the Elephant's danglies!

decided to try a few vehicles from Butlers Printed Models, though please excuse the foul language, but they were in 1:76  :-[

my only excuse was that I needed some for my 20mm wargames unit, I know, not a valid excuse  :(

anyway, order was placed a few days ago, and vehicles arrived this morning.

having 'gone off' 3D printed stuff several years ago after failing miserably to deal with the 'pebble-dash' finish, many things tried, I was not holding a great deal of hope for these, but hoped that additional stowage, cam nets etc might cover the worst.

BUT

they are superb, in fact the first, a Ferret mk.2, is already on the painting table in primer.

ok, the finish is not 100% as good as an injection kit, but once primed the finish is pretty good. I'm sure that by the time the base coat and camo pattern have been added, it will be a job to tell.

prices are slightly less than equivalent resin/white metal kits, and the completed model is much lighter.

all in all, score out of 10 ?
a definite 9 for me, but then I'm a grumpy old git, and so am never satisfied  :smiley-laughing:

if their N stuff is as good, then I'd highly recommend them.

off to spray the Ferret black, then when dry [shouldn't take long in this heat] apply blu-tac masking, spray on the olive drab, a coat of satin varnish, transfers from http://www.kingfisherminiatures.co.uk/1-76-Vehicles-c1.htm, (http://www.kingfisherminiatures.co.uk/1-76-Vehicles-c1.htm,) a coat of matt to seal them, then off to the table to get some combat in .
