Sounds like a worthwhile project.

p.s not being funny but do you spell it "Rememberance" or "Remembrance"? I always use the second spelling but don't know if it might have changed over time.

Hello all,

I just wanted to publicly pay tribute to Gareth in managing to get this ambitious project off the ground.

He has convinced Freightliner to name a full-size locomotive, in a new variant of their livery, and Dapol to produce an exclusive model, with proceeds going to a very good cause.

Frankly I am amazed at what he has achieved, and we at Revolution are very happy to offer the modest support we have.

Cheers

Ben A.

Like Ben, I can't emphasise enough what a great job Gareth has done. To get one company to rename a loco is a mammoth task, to be well on the way to convincing others AND to get limited editions produced is just incredible.

Cheers, Mike

Well done Gareth.  I remember well when you said to me that you hoped to get these models off the ground, but then it went silent.  So, I'm amazed by what you've achieved so far.

What a great idea and you've done a fantastic job!

As I can only afford one I'll have to wait and see which locos are selected before committing.

But one will be coming my way.

Can I add my voice that this is a great idea and what brilliant raffle prizes. Incidentally the spelling is "Remembrance" - I play for a Remembrance Festival every year. There is of course a history if misspellings of locomotive names the GWR in braod gauge days was a culprit.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for all your kind comments and support you have all shown on here and at TINGS, it has been personally overwhelming.

@MacRat (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=278) spoke about livery on the Revolution Pendolino thread - Originally all three of the locomotives were painted in the same colour scheme in an agreement between all three rail companies, when the liveries were removed to be inline with each individual companies liveries there was uproar from the public especially from within the ranks of railway employees who had served in the trenches.

This livery was Black with from what I understand was gold lining. While I would love to have had the ability to persuade the rail companies to  recreate this unfortunately the costs are so high that the money raised would not even meet the cost of repainting.

The one thing I can assure you all is that each of the nameplates will be an nod to the original nameplates carried by the steam locomotives after world war one.

Have you managed to persuade Dapol to do the livery as well or just the plates??

Hi Railwaygun,

Dapol are doing the model identical to the loco with the new Genesse and Wyoming markings as well as the Zero Injuries logos not just the namplates.
As far as we are aware this will be the first model in the N gauge market which will carry this new livery alteration which is an added bonus although by no means intended but who am I to argue it the loco Frieghtliner offered nd i was more than willing to grasp for a number of reasons!

On the artwork note I can happily reveal the card sleeves that are going to be the packaging for the models, thanks must go to @Ben A (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=94) who designed these and i think it look spot on! I was hoping to have this to show at TINGS but had to check the price of doing it before giving it the go ahead:

I have already had the piece read to me so I will be picking it up on my way to the next meeting for the project tomorrow (I never thought I would have to go to so many meetings!)

It is also on page 92 of the current issue of BRM, and will be in some more mags as the month goes on.

I just want to say thanks to everyone for all the support you have shown for this project.

Hi everyone,

Ok an update on the project before things slow down a little for the day job to take hold even more than normal!

I am very pleased to be able to announce that Freightliner Class 66 locomotive 66418 will be named PATRIOT at a special ceremony on the 11th November.

The nameplates are as we speak been produced and are very purposefully reminiscent of the plates carried by the original LNWR PATRIOT nameplates carried by Claughton Class which was numbered 1914.

There are a few alterations to the nameplate but the design will for the most part remain the same.

If any of you are at the Dapol collectors club open day next weekend, and want to know more I will be there so don't be shy come and say hello and ask away I will be more than happy to chat and answer as many questions as I can.

Regards

Gareth

Do you know yet if the nameplates on the model will be brass or printed?
I am hoping brass! They would definitely we worth the extra.

Hi All,

I had an interesting day at Dapol on Saturday meeting some of you who were there and well my horrific speech (Trying not to swear when your in the army is difficult!)

The project for "Patriot" has had a minor set back we were hoping to have the models ready for Warley but due to unforeseen issues they have missed their production slot. Although the plan is still to go live with the sales at the opening of Warley and have a Sample there so everyone to see and online for those that wont be there.

We are now working very hard to get the issues that have pushed the production back sorted and get them out as soon as possible to all those that purchase one. While it is a set back for the project and for me personally these things happen and the way I look at it is that going from the real thing to an actual model in such a sort time frame is still an achievement.

I am hoping to have some pictures very soon of the real nameplates which will go online in due course

Hi Gareth,

Delays are inevitable in any project like this.

The most important thing is to keep your customers informed and reassured, which you've done, so no problem.

Hi all,

Ok well time for another update after another rounds of meetings today, and things are getting real now it seems like only 2 years ago I got the idea (one of the few good ones I get).
Today it was all about the actual naming, sadly all the naming will be private due to constraints placed upon us although there will be a chance to see the loco on the day of the naming for those that want to see it up close and personal, details will come out closer to the time although it will be a close thing again this is due to a number of constraints placed on us especially with the military aspect of things. I am sure you will all understand this and we will do what we can to get this info out to you in a timely manner.

Ok as Robert puts it use my military position to encourage those people to speed up production, well sadly no can do now it is what it is but I should have a sample Model at Warley where I am been kindly hosted on the Revolution / Rapido stand.

Now on to the juicy bit for today I have received a picture of the wooden plaques to be used in the nameplate making process and I love it and it really does make it real:

It really goes back to the original PATRIOT name plate and personally I cant wait to see there plate come from wooded plaques through the process and into actual cast plates! Its getting exciting but also terrifying the best way I can think of it is like a swan calm and graceful on top but under the surface kicking like hell!!

Hi All,

Something that I thought I would share with you all as this is one of the key things that made me really want to go ahead with this project it is the story of a railway man who left his protected trade working for LNWR to face the horror of the trenches.

This is an extract from the London Gazette on the 27th November 1918:

No. 59812 Pte. Wilfred Wood, 10th Bn., Northumberland Fus (Stockport)
for the most conspicuous bravery and initiative on 28th October, 1918 , near Casa Vin, Italy when a unit on the right flank having been held up by hostile machine gun guns and snipers, Pte. Wood, on his own initiative, worked forward with his Lewis gun, enfiladed the enemy machine gun-nest, and caused 140 enemy to surrender.
The advance was continued till a hidden machine gun opened fire at point blank range. without a moments hesitation Pte. Wood charged the machine gun, firing his Lewis gun from the hip at the same time. He killed the machine gun crew, and without further orders pushed on and enfiladed a ditch from which three officers and 160 men subsequently surrendered.
The conspicuous valour and initiative of this gallant soldier in the face of intense rifle and machine-gun fire was beyond all praise

For his brave actions Pte Wilfred Woods was awarded the Victoria Cross and was one of 3 members of the LNWR to be awarded the VC with a Claughton class locomotive named after him and when they were rebuilt as the PATRIOT class his name was carried over by what became LMS.

He continued to work on the railway until his retirement in 1960 as a Supervisor at Longsight shed, he passed away on the 3rd January 1982 at his home in Hazel grove, the name plate to the Patriot class locomotive can be found at   Regimental Museum of The Northumberland Fusiliers at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland where a brass name plate from 'Patriot' number 5536/45536 bears his name.

The reason this hits home for me personally is that Pte Woods joined the army at the same place I did the Armory at Stockport, and before been transferred to the Northumberland Fus he joined the Cheshire regiment the same regiment I joined.

This man was lucky to survive the war unlike the 20,000 railway employees who never came home, but his bravery is a glowing example of all of their bravery choosing to fight when they had a get out clause!

Hello all,

I just wanted to post a couple of images from the day.  It was a privilege and an honour to be there, and the locomotive looked fabulous outside Freightliner's new depot.  The loco is the first to carry the new variant of Freighliner's powerhaul livery with the Genessee and Wyoming branding, and this was the first function to be held there:

The nameplates looked very smart, and after a short sermon the two minutes' silence was observed with an honour guard from the Mercian Regiment.

This has all been down to the work of Corporal Gareth Atkinson, who aswell as persuading Freightliner to name their loco also managed to persuade the Army to send vehicles to escort it!  I think is a remarkable achievement.

250 models of 66418 are being produced by Dapol with proceeds to go to the Army Benevolent Fund and I think this is a wonderful initiative.

Cheers

Hi All,
Firstly thank you for all the very kind words.
I have just got home and fair to say I am shattered so the emotions of today have really not sank in yet but no doubt over the next few days they will sink in. It has been a great privilege today and went better than I imagined. But the nameplate and plaque have totally blown my mind I got to see them in the flesh yesterday and words can't describe.
A massive thank and thumbs up must go to Freightliner, Dapol and Ben A and Red_death from Revolution trains, hand on heart if it wasn't for all of them this project would still be an idea on a piece of paper. After 2 years of hard work in the shadows for today to actually become a reality it's down to their good grace, trust and mostly patience with some annoying bloke from the army!

And they have really shown the truth in a quote I used today from David Stirling the founder of what is now know as the SAS:
"THERE IS NOTHING STRONGER THAN THE HEART OF A VOLUNTEER"

As Ben says there is going to be a limited edition run of this locomotive available to purchase as of the 26th November on the project website at 105 pounds each with ALL the profit going to ABF - The Soldiers Charity.
The Raffle prize of a cab ride will be going up in the next 24 hours I was going to have it up today but true to real life on the railways its delayed not by leaves on the line but the fact I am that shattered I am trying not to fall asleep on the Keyboard.

I don't have any pics from today but my family has and I will post them up when I get them tomorrow

Regards,
A very tired Gareth

It was a great privilege to be involved in today's service and ceremony and it is testament to Gareth's ideas and ultimately hard work that it went so well.

Freightliner and all involved did a great job and it was incredible to be able to see a VC and talk to the family of Wilfred Wood VC.

Thoroughly moving. I've got a load of photos that I will try to get posted up when I'm home tomorrow evening.

Well it was the morning after the night before and my feet are still killing me! Who thought on a depot in the space of 8 hours your could cover 19 miles walking!
Yesterday is only just really sinking in as I calm down and become more human than the state I was in yesterday running round like a blue a**ed fly, it was an amazing day even with all the stress and rushing around and the feeling now is just pure elation, and the question "knowing what I know now would I start this project from scratch again?" YOU BET, it has been hard work and I know I can be a bit of a task master and pain but everyone has really come together on this and made it such an amazing feat.

As I have said I had the idea but it was everyone coming together that made this happen, and that on a personal note as a serving soldier makes me proud to actually serve knowing that everyone was so willing to make this happen!

One of the things I have learnt over the past few days though isn't so good  :-[ I am better off not trying to paint my own models! I am rubbish at painting!! But the flip side to that I can say I have painted my own real life locomotive helping in doing the final touch ups on Thursday ready for PATRIOT to have her big day!

I know the guys from my Battalion who came were really honored to be part of the event even with the quote "When are we doing it again?" and "Can I have a drive?" which just made the feeling of the whole day coming together and well proves there is a bit of railway in all of use maybe one or two new N gauge modelers  :D

On a polite note for those that were there sorry if I made you jump out of your skin as the guard was ordered on, but everyone should know we like to shout in the army!  :smiley-laughing:

As yet I am still waiting to get the family pictures of the day but one I have is of the miniature nameplate plaque which will take pride of place in my model room:

*Just a small note for any would be burglars out there in the world I have access to weapons and a Scottish other half, fear both but mostly her!*

Finally to answer the question of the models:

There are some artwork tweaks to be done for the models but I am kindly been hosted by Revolution / Rapido at Warley and all things been equal we should have a deco sample ready for then and on display, with the models available to order on the project website the same time as the gates of hell Warley open, with the completed models arriving on your door step early next year.

Just so you are all aware there is no pre order system before then as honestly with the day job fitting everything in has been a struggle already and I don't have the time to add that into a todo list which is never ending!

Owe and a small note for me to remember: At a naming is pays to move fast for the post naming reception food I didn't even get a look in!!!

Congratulations Gareth.  A truly wonderful day for you and a fantastic achievement. The mini nameplate is a real treasure.

I wish I could have been at Crewe to see the engine. I am hoping to be able to contribute To the project by taking delivery of a miniature version. I have set my alarm for early on 26th.

Just a thought... I think £105 is very reasonable, and wonder if your website might have options to voluntarily add a £5, £10 or buyer-specified amount to bolster the funds raised.  Like with the Poppylino, many of us were happy to pay the extra tenner. I wonder, would I be buying one if the price was £115 or £125. I'm sure I would, so why not... the extra goes where it's needed.  You have already done a great job raising awareness and it'd be great to see your sales maximizing the fundraising total.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for you kind words.

With regards to making an extra donation to be honest I like your idea but the admin behind it could become complicated, so for those wishing to make an extra donation go directly to the ABF website https://www.soldierscharity.org/# (https://www.soldierscharity.org/#)

As to the price of the model 105 was choose as it is more than a standards model you can get but at the same time not over pricing itself out of the market. I want the models to sell reasonably quick and make sure they all sell as any that don't will impact on the money going to the ABF, also as there is another 2 names and models to be done I need to use the time as best I can which means any straggling models could take up time better used for getting things ready for the next naming and model.

Regards

Gareth

The models are up on the website on 26th - any particular time? - cos I want one !!! If the models go on sale at 00:01 I will stay up to get my order in from home, ( :censored: web connection permitting), otherwise, if you wanted to release the models at 19:00 I will be at work so should have a much better chance then. I realise that this would mean people sitting around all day waiting, but, I don't care  >:D, I want one!! (Seriously, good luck to all who want one but please remember me, who lives in the middle of nowhere with very poor internet, water from a well, no mains gas, although I do have electricity, so don't rush to get your orders in ). Okay, I think I have made my point.  :beers:

The winning ticket will be drawn at Warley on the 27th November.

Hi All,

Just a little bump the Raffle for the cab ride finishes online a week today at 16:00, this is a rare oportunity if not near impossible to get these days.
As they say "You have to be in in it to win it" and at five pounds all to ABF - The Soldiers Charity its more than worth it if I do say so myself.

http://www.revolutiontrains.com/product/project-railway-honour-raffle-ticket-freightliner-cab-ride-2016/ (http://www.revolutiontrains.com/product/project-railway-honour-raffle-ticket-freightliner-cab-ride-2016/)

Once the tickets finish online there will be a finla chance to purchase a ticket from myself in cash at Warley where I am been hosted by Revolution trains on stand C31 where I will also have the first deco sample of PATRIOT and the model sales will go live.

Managed to get my order in even from where I live in the middle of nowhere - the internet was behaving itself today, only took me about 20 minutes! I had to try as I did not want to wait until I got to work tonight and risk missing out, (hopefully they are well on the way to selling out by tonight ). Well done Gareth, roll on the next one.  :beers:

Hi All,

Well I am just back (don't you just love rail replacement buses!!  :veryangry: ) firstly it was great meeting as many of you as I could this weekend even if it was for a fleeting moment fair to say it has been a very busy weekend!

A huge congratulations must go to @Ben A (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=94) and @red_death (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=246) on been awarded the Gwyn Humphrey Award today although I missed that bit while I was getting some 'Fresh air'
 :oopssign:

http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=35400.msg414311#new (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=35400.msg414311#new)

And back to "Patriot" I received the first Deco Sample on Friday and their are some mistakes and things that need cleaning up the basic design is their. The new G & W markings are on the sample and looking good and perfectly done already its just the things that make "Patriot" different amongst its 66/4 classmates which we are now working on to make the model identical to the day it was named at Crewe

I have the sample with me and will get some picture up in due course for everyone who wasn't able to make Warley get a peek at it this first Deco Sample to get a taste of what the final model will look like when it arrives on your doors in due course.

I will finally be getting around to working directly on the Project website updating it and getting a newsletter out to keep you all informed of the news relating to "Patriot", (A very full time Military Career, the real loco naming and working with the model has taken up all of my time until now) so within the coming week now the naming is done I can get to concentrate on the website and the model alone (well around work anyhow).

The model sales are live at:

http://www.revolutiontrains.com/product/dapol-66418-patriot-limited-edition/ (http://www.revolutiontrains.com/product/dapol-66418-patriot-limited-edition/)

This is a limited edition model and very much a first come first served model, this will never be produced again so if you want one please get your order in for this unique model in support of and directly raising funds for ABF - The Soldiers Charity.

I sadly now have to make a point clear after reports that were made to me over the course of the weekend which went as follows:

THE ORGANISATIONS INVOLVED ARE TAKING A CUT OF THE PROFIT SO THE ABF WAS ONLY GETTING A PERCANTAGE OF THE PROFITS FROM THE MODELS

THIS IS TOTALLY UNFOUNDED AND A COMPLETE LIE, ALL THE PROFITS ARE GOING DIRECTLY TO ABF - THE SOLDIERS CHAIRITY

Dapol, Revolution Trains and Freightliner have all contributed their time and expertise to this project knowing full well that there is no profit in this project for them and they have all volunteered to be part of this project to HONOUR THE PAST AND HELP TODAY, I think it is very disappointing that individuals not linked to this project feel the need to spread the false comments and should they wish to come forward and make them publically then I will happily deal with their comments.

Finally on a happy note, congratulations to JAMES EDMUNDS who was the winner of the FREIGHTLINER cab ride between Crewe and Carlisle, your details have been passed on to my contact at Crewe who will be in contact in due course to organise this rare opportunity.

Thanks

Gareth

Hello all,

Gareth has told me about a couple of comments that were made to him.  I am posting what follows on RM Web too.

It seems very sad to me that such a wonderfully altruistic and inspiring project should be leading to unfounded rumours and negativity, and it almost beggars belief that I have to write this, but for avoidance of doubt and to scotch any more of this nonsense let me just say this:

1). Revolution Trains is providing free web hosting to Gareth for Project Railway Honour. This doesn't really cost us anything, and therefore is not diverting away any monies from our crowdfunding supporters, but means PRH does not have to fund a website or pay for merchandising software. So more money goes to the ABF Soldiers' Charity. To avoid such costs and the necessary set-up expertise Gareth could've chosen Paypal but that would incur fees and so less would go to charity.

2). Revolution Trains has hosted Gareth at both TINGS and Warley, absolutely free of charge, to give him a platform for PRH. Warley and TINGS are arguably the two most important shows in the model railway calendar and offer by far the most effective way to generate interest and instil confidence in PRH. My experience is that engaging with customers face to face - at these major events - builds confidence and credibility infinitely more than just working from behind a keyboard. If not, the shows would rapidly lose serious manufacturer support!

3). My personal contribution so far is to design the PRH presentation box and leaflets, and to pay for the latter to be printed. I chose to pay for the printing as a gesture of my personal support and to ensure not a penny of Revolution Funding was used for anything not directly related to the business. Also, and I can't believe I feel the need to write this, I will also be paying the same as everyone else for one of the locos, which I have already ordered. Adding all this together means that I will be supporting this project with around £250 of my own money, which I am delighted to do as I will be getting a fantastic and unique model and doing something I believe to be right.

And let me add this personal note: I have a huge respect and admiration for those who serve our country. I have had occasion to work with British Forces at various times in some unpleasant and dangerous places in my "day job" and found them to be incredibly professional, decent and honest in conditions of extreme stress. Some may also know that I have written a book detailing incidents of supreme bravery by police officers, proceeds of which go to the Police Dependents Trust and only last week was invited to their 50th anniversary reception as a thank you for the money that book has raised.

My personal view is that the treatment of wounded servicemen or emergency service personnel - or those suffering the scars that cannot be seen - can be disgraceful and I am happy and proud to offer what little assistance I can. They do a job that is far more important and dangerous than waffling into a microphone! Or, indeed, making model trains.

And let me add to anyone weighing up the veracity of these claims: Would a respected company like Freightliner, or a manufacturer like Dapol, have got involved if there was even the tiniest aspect that was not above board? Would the Briitsh Army have sent an honour guard to the dedication service that saw the loco named at Crewe?

Of course not. The rumours are utter rubbish.

Furthermore, I think that sniping and making utterly baseless allegations about PRH is, frankly, very poor form and if it puts one person off supporting this project is truly despicable.

I do not know where the rumours came from, who started them, or what their motive might be. But whoever they are, I think their behaviour says a lot more about them and their own integrity than it does about PRH.

Here endeth the rant, and can we now please get back to enjoying in a spirit of comradeship and co-operation this hobby we all love.

Cheers

Ben A.

Very well said Ben. It does indeed beggar belief that anyone could in anyway deride or besmirch Project Railway Honour, the causes it supports, or the noble folk enabling it. I would go so far as to say that attacking any of the above in such a despicable and cowardly fashion is to attack those honoured by Project Railway Honour. Disgraceful indeed.

The irony of Project Railway Honour existing to honour and support those whose sacrifice allow these worms the freedom to spin their malicious bile, will be beyond the wit of their feeble minds.

Please ignore the trolls and misinformed, there will always be a naysayer lurking under a stone.

It is disappointing to have allegations thrown around against such a worthy cause, but anyone who has heard you talk about PRH and read the lengths to which you have gone to get to this stage cannot fail to respect what you, Revolution, Dapol & Freightliner have done.

All the best

Hi Gang;

I can only echo Ben's sentiments about Project Railway Honour. As a fellow serviceman, I know how difficult it is to garner support for such an innovative fund raising campaign...and the doubters in Industry and the Military will have gone over Gareth's proposal with a fine tooth comb. There are many so called charities out there who siphon off funds to shareholders, 'costs' and entertaining....this is certainly not one of them.
Gareth's moral courage and integrity at pushing this project forward is to be commended and admired.

I have promised to buy one of the models from him, and I hope pre-sales at Warley were encouraging. I'm sure that more people will commit once they see pics of the pre-production sample or the finished product.

I also congratulate Dapol, Freightliner and Revolution for their foresight and support of one of Her Majesty's servicemen.

Later;
Stu from EGDL

Hi all,

Ok firstly thank you for your support after these accusations have been made, as Ben stated so well if their was even a inkling of foul play would all these individual organisations they even entertain the idea?

While I am still angry about these comments, all of the people involved in this project continue to support this project and all are of a higher morale standing than the party wish decided to spread these foul accusations, to draw a line under this if this party chooses to continue I am sure some of my friends who have received help from ABF - The Soldiers Charity will happily beat then with their prosthetic limbs!!

Ok back to what this thread should be about I am just starting to populate the order list from the weekend and carry out some admin, then once I have done so I am going to get some pictures taken and up online of the first sample.
Then I think it will be an early night! Something about the 0430 alarm call on Sunday and the not so warm floor when my snoring, farting and dribbling in a hotel lobby stole the last of my already slim dignity!

Hi All,

Ok firstly a pic from the weekend one of the few opportunities I had all weekend to get off the stand and I borrowed the head board from the LMS PATRIOT PROJECT

And now onto the first sample and please excuse the not so great pictures I have taken them on my tablet so not the greatest!

Each model is coming in a specially designed card outer sleeve for the project and will also have a certificate with each model although to see one of the certificates you will just have to buy a model!

There are a few small issues with this first sample which has already been fired off to China for them to work on and improve, but that's why you ask for samples to check.

When I get hold of an actual camera and maybe something a little more scenic I will take some better pics.

Gareth, the pics look great. Just like the real thing!

Very sorry to hear about the rumours.  After a couple of PMs we exchanged a couple of years ago regarding donations to the British Legion, I have no doubts whatsoever about your integrity and I had no qualms at all placing my order for a Patriot.

Ben wrote so eloquently on the subject and his feelings come through very well in his understated prose. I think we all share that indignation on your behalf.  It is sad that Ben had to detail his own contribution to the project; it is, I suspect, anathema to him to do so.

I sincerely hope that the support you find here on the forum goes a little way to making you feel better about the situation and giving you back the pride and the joy in your achievement.

I eagerly await the next loco announcement... with credit card at the ready, and without any hesitation.

Hi Gareth,

A shame to hear about the comments, but there are far more people on here and other forums who think you are doing fantastic work.

My order has been placed.

Cheers, Mark.

..There are a few small issues with this first sample which has already been fired off to China for them to work on and improve, but that's why you ask for samples to check...
Hi Gareth, can you confirm that one of the issues to be corrected is the colour of the buffer beam?
Title: Re: PROJECT RAILWAY HONOUR BREAKS COVER
Post by: acko22 on December 02, 2016, 03:23:55 PM
Yeah the buffers are obe of the issues while in appearance its a big issues I have been assured that having them black as the real PATRIOT is will not be an issue.
This error was noted by Dapol the moment it arrived and has already been sent to china to make sure they get it right.

Cheers

Hi all,

Just to keep you up to date and not to think I have dropped off the end of the world sales are still on going at:

I am trying to get round to updating things on the website, but like many of you in the build up to Christmas things have got mental at work so not getting a chance to literally its work and sleep right now but I should get a chance to this weekend all things been equal!

Thanks

Signed up for one at Warley, and looking forward to the next two.   It is a very worthy project(so get your hands in your pockets please).   Well done for setting this up and pushing it forwards.

Best wishes with the project.

Gareth has already sold an impressive amount, but there are still plenty left for sale if anyone is interested!

It would be great if the limited edition was all sold out by the time that the model arrives from Dapol (I'm sure Gareth will have a better idea of when it is due than me!).

Hi all,

As Mike says there are still models available and he is the same as me I want these models sold out sooner rather than later!
A to the progress on the models well we are waiting for corrected artworks and a 2nd sample now from China the main thing been the sample while pictures are great I am sure we all can agree you can only really tell when you have the real things in your hand as to how accurate things actually are (one thing I have learnt from Revolution trains if you are not 100% ask for a sample)
The moment the artwork is 100% then I will sign off for production, all parties involved are very keen to get the models out their and into peoples hands from a modelling point of view and are working hard to get them ready as soon as possible.

With this project the money will not go across until ALL the models have been sold, so if we can get them all sold before the models are posted then a week later all the proceeds will be fired off to the ABF where it is really needed the longer it takes for the models to be sold out the longer those who need the help have to wait.

This weekend I will have a chance to sit down and give a more in depth update and get back on task with the project without the day job been rude and interrupting!

Thanks

Gareth

:D agree that work gets in the way for us in the modelling world but it does apy some of the bills - hopefully corrections sooner than later and can see that the dreaded new year will be a brake on progress.
More strength to your elbow 100% behind you.

Let's hope the publicity persuades many more modellers that this loco would make an ideal Christmas present.

HI all,

OK firstly apologies for the delays, the illness I had been dealing with last year well tried to make a comeback but thankfully it is been dealt with even though its taken a bit of a toll on me.

As for the model itself ok we are waiting for the second deco sample and are pushing it for to be on its way asap so we (Dapol, myself and Freightliner) can all sign it off and get it into production.

With Chinese New year here the production run will not move into full swing until after then but the moment its all signed of and production has begun I will make sure the news gets out there.

Owe a small spoiler for the news letter Mr Hale has said yes to my challenge although he wasn't expecting me to mean carrying full battle weight, have a read and if anyone is feeling stupid I mean brave let me know!

That was a good read and I agree with the sentiments too, 'get it delayed, to get it right'.

Quite impressive considering you have only just moved away from crayons. Was it a felt tip or pencil job?

Well done Gareth. You've done a cracking job so far.

Can't wait to get my grubby hands on the model and to see (and support) the next loco.

Thank you Gareth. The newsletter as a whole was a very enjoyable read. I was genuinely moved by the last chapter on Pte W Wood VC. I believe it's important to hear stories of individuals. Especially for those of us who are fortunate not to have personally sacrificed or lost, yet have benefited from the sacrifices that many millions have made over the centuries. Important to remember the big numbers, but important too to remember that it's individuals that make up those big numbers.

Well on the tax note, especially for those who order from abroad and are VAT exempt.
The project is actually tax free as it falls outside the VAT limits so no matter where you are the UK or Australia no tax will be taken out so all the profit is going direct the ABF - The soldiers Charity

On Another note I have had an email this week which I have literally just opened (as I have been living with the trees and ice this week) Dapol have received the second deco sample which I will be collecting in person next week when I stop playing Army.
When I get my hands on it I will be checking it over and if I am happy I will be making a trip to freightliner HQ to get their sign off then we will be pushing for the first possible spot on the production line!

Regards

Gareth

Hi All,

Well I am back from living like a tramp! Today after work I made a visit to Dapol to collect the second deco sample and have a detailed look over it, there is a few very minor tidy up points which will be dealt with.

This is the good bit now with them points noted and been fired off to China, now the bit that well brings great relief and joy for me!!
With the minor tidy up points THE PRH CLASS 66 "PATRIOT - IN MEMORY OF FALLEN RAILWAY EMPLOYEES" WILL BE GOING INTO PRODUCTION BY THE END OF THE MONTH!! I know it isn't as speedy as was hoped but I wanted to make sure it was right!
The aim is to have the models in the UK no later than the York Show, those that have pre-ordered will receive them as soon as is reasonably possible, although I will have a busy few days boxing and shipping as both Mike and Ben know too well its a big job!!

I will get pictures up as and when possible!

Regards

Gareth

Hi All,

Ok so the second sample model well:

Dapol have been working hard to make things come together and they have done a cracking job, straight from the off they have corrected the one glaring oversight made in china the buffer beam which is now black as it was on the day!

Just as the real locomotive Dapol have also ensured that the name plates are not on the same level, for those that have seen PATRIOT in real life on one side the name plates are lower this is due to equipment inside the engine bay.

Keeping it totally inline with the aim of the project Dapol are doing everything they can to pack every little bit of detail in to have the model representing 66418 in the day including, painting the top of the steps white the real locomotive was on the 11th November 2016 when named.

This is the second sample and Freightliner, myself and Dapol are happy with the samples and we are pressing ahead with production, there is a few notes and a little bit of tidying but Dapol and their guys have come up trumps with the 2nd sample.

Again I take this as a chance to thank all those who have been involved with this project, Dapol, Freightliner and Revolution Trains ( @Ben A (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=94) , @red_death (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=246) ) these are the people who deserve all the praise as these are the guys who have been willing to use their expertise give their time and help me take this project from pieces of paper to where it stands today!

Models are still available to purchase at

http://www.revolutiontrains.com/product/dapol-66418-patriot-limited-edition/ (http://www.revolutiontrains.com/product/dapol-66418-patriot-limited-edition/)

At £105 each + Postage and Packaging.

As I said the other day the models are now in for production at the end of the month with them been in the UK for York where I will be onhand with my own running example of PATRIOT.

Regards

Gareth

Hi everyone,

Firstly an apology that I haven't been on here since well Glasgow this gs in the day job have got hectic as of late and we'll very shortly they are about to go into over drive seeing me well dissappear for a few months unfortunately this means the project will have to take a back step.

OK back to the positives well the Dapol are sorting the models but they missed the ship so we are looking at air freight ingredients them possibly, to have them here ASAP before I go and do the day job overseas.

However should the costs be to excessive as I see it then they will be shipped as normal and a very kind Revilution Trains has offered to assist with getting them out in my absence, which isn't ideal and we'll in my view the exact opposite of what I wanted as well my hair bribed project my responsibility.

Finally before I go back to doing army type things is for those that I managed to chat to at Glasgow it was a pleasure, and I was sober!!!! Which some people seem to think I can't be on a normal daily basis!! ???

That would be great if you can (and they do arrive in time, of course). :D
However, if it causes too many problems, then not to worry; I'm quite happy for nature to takes its course, as it were. :(

If it is possible to collect at York, then hopefully that's an extra £7 to ABF, for postage/shipping that won't be needed to be spent. Or am I been too naÔve...? :worried:

Thank you Gareth, Dapol (and Revolution, for facilitating) for all your hard work on this very worthy (and worthwhile...!) project.

Might try and make it up to York, but will have to see if I can get up for the 0620 train!

So you wont be in York then  :laugh3:

OK to answer some questions with questions and working on the assumption I have the models there in time!

For those of you that have ordered one and will be coming to the show would you be willing to sacrifice the P&P?? as @LeftToMyOwnDevices (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5505)  says its an extra amount to the ABF?

Reason I ask is purely working on the admin side of things I can have a list of those of you that have bought one and simple get you to sign for the models in person that way all is covered!

But why do some of you have to live so far away? You know you lot that decide to live over the other side of water! My god speaking to my post office and the look of horror when I asked about posting overseas you lot don't half know how to make the post womans life hard do you!

But the accounting well as I am learning the hard way that can be a lot more tricky! So if those of you that wish to collect in person are willing to sacrifice the P&P cost that is something I will work to enable.

As to the thanks shouldn't go to me the thanks should go to the good people at Dapol, Revolution trains and Freightliner without any of them the project would have not of been possible, all their work support and good grace has made this possible!

Thanks

gareth

...on the admin side of things I can have a list of those of you that have bought one and simple get you to sign for the models in person that way all is covered!

That seems like a very good idea - I'm sure Mike and/or Ben can help you sort that out. You might want to see some proof of ID from people, before you hand anything over...? ???

Not necessarily the payment card they used for the original purchase, but something to satisfy you that they are the person they claim to be. :o Whilst you might know some people, like alibuchan for example(?), but you might not recognise me, in person, compared to my NGF name. :D

Gareth, if you're taking models up to York it'd be great to pick mine up not sure if you want details of my order or not?

Well done to all those involved, Always great to see unique models being created!

All the best - and I hope everything arrives on time: you, the Dapol models (and me, on Saturday, off the 0900 from KX...).  :laugh3:

Hi all,

Ok well today has been a pain! So sadly the annoying news due to the black art of the logistics companies sadly we have not received the models so I will not have them at York this weekend unfortunately, I wont lie when I say I am a little bummed about this to be polite, unfortunately despite a day of calls around the various logistics depots to try and catch the models er route  it was very much as case of  :headbutt:

But the models are 100% in the UK and I will be in a position next week to get them in the post to those of you that have pre ordered one! Fo those who haven't yet they are still available to purchase at 105 plus P&P which for a limited edition when compared with some upcoming releases I think is a bargin! Plus if you order at York you will have it in your hand by the end of the month!

My apologies for those of you that were hoping like me to get your hands on one this weekend but the dark lords or the logistics world didnt want to play as its easter weekend this weekend!

Hello all,

Just to confirm once the Bank Holiday weekend is over we are anticipating that these models will begin shipping from Dapol to us, and from us to supporters.

Once the models are with us they will be packaged with their certificates and posted out as quickly as possible, given the constraint that this work will have to fit around "proper" jobs.

I know Gareth had planned to do all this himself but cannot for very good reasons so Mike and I are happy to step in and help out.

Cheers

Ben A.

Ben,

I notice that your website is also saying:
Quote
Alternatively you can collect your model at DEMUís Showcase exhibition on 3/4 June 2017 at Burton.

For myself, I am quite happy wait until DEMUís Showcase exhibition, if that saves you the hassle of posting out. As I suggested before (for the York show), that £7 postage saved can go to the ABF.

Wonder if there is a more appropriate way for others to indicate this...?
Probably, not through multiple postings on this Forum, perhaps. :worried:

I am actually not in a desperate rush to get mine. Frankly, candidly speaking, Iím not interested in Class 66s; but I am interested in the laudable work that Gareth is doing Ė hence I am prepared to put my money where my mouth is, on this one...

Appreciate that others might be more Ďdesperateí to get hold of theirs...
...but we might want to pause and reflect on why this locomotive is being produced...

Charles.

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick one before I crawl into bed, glad you are getting your models and hole you enjoy them, if you know of anyone who you think would like one all I can ask now is please keep spreading the word and let's get all 250 gone and the money to the ABF The Soldiers Charity.

Again I have to thank Revolution trains, Dapol and Freightliner as well as everyone else for all thier help given thier time and we'll honestly the patience of saints for putting up with me!!!!
But also all of you who have bought one if it wasn't for you there would be no money raised to help service personnel their families and veterans in their time of need.

Right now time for me to see about dragging my back side to bed for a few hours.

Before acko left he gave me a large number of address labels - these have all been posted out with the exception of a few modellers who have indicated they would pick theirs up at DEMU next weekend.

We will also bring some Patriots to sell at DEMU if anyone wants to reserve one please PM me, or email Revolution via the website, and we will amke sure we bring it along and you can pay on the day.

Hi Ben, not wanting to sound impatient, (who me ), but have you a time scale of when the models were sent out please? The only reason I ask, (apart from impatience to get one in my mitts  :)), is so that those of us who live outside the UK, will have an idea of when to expect the model, and, in my case, talk to the postman and get him to put it in the 'secret place', if I am not about. Many thanks.

Thanks Ben.

I have the same issue as Dannyboy. Our regular post lady is amazing.  She once came to the back yard while I was mowing to get me to sign. The 'occasional' post lady will leave "sorry we missed you" in the mailbox while my wife is sitting in the front room. But I can't rely on Liz to see that and chase her down the street to get it, like she often does.

Hopefully if it is not signed for it will just get tossed in the mailbox.

Looking forward to its arrival  8)

Hello all,

I am glad those who've received their PRH locos are enjoying them.

There are a number of people who still have not; for which I apologise.

As forum members following this thread will know, Gareth (acko) had planned to send out the models himself, however an unexpected deployment has meant Revolution stepping up and offering to assist.

Unfortunately, after a period of relative quiet, this coincided with the launch of IZA Cargowaggon twin, receipt of Class 92 sample, receipt of Class 321 CADs and finalising of Class B tanker livery diagrams.

This has left no time for sending out the PRH models since DEMU Showcase the weekend before last.

We will send out recently ordered models as soon as possible, but would ask supporters to bear with us for the time being.

cheers

Ben A.

Although to see someone running the model and the pics of them all the way over in Oz and NZ is a nice pick up point.

Any takers in Canada, India and South Africa? Then we can say we have at least one model in the countries which most of the brave men fought from!

Not sure if this is the appropriate place for this but the photos below were taken yesterday on a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffordshire, close to Burton-upon-Trent and Lichfield. Amongst the hundreds of memorials is the Rail Industry Memorial shown below.

There are large special memorials for the Burma Railway and the Sumatra Railway and those who suffered in their construction during World War II. I found the whole visit extremely moving and would recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in the 20th/21st century history of the UK, and the wider Commonwealth. There is no entry charge but donations are welcome. One sobering highlight is the enormous Armed Services Memorial which lists on its walls the names of the 22000 UK service personnel who have lost their lives in service since World War II.

I will be honest and say thats the first I have seen of that memorial but its been a few years since I last had the chance to visit.

Sadly I 18 friends are on the memorial at the centre, but @woodbury22uk (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1599)  says I personally would recommend people to visit even if you dont know of people who have or are serving.

While the UK hasnt seen the brunt of armed conflict since the bombings of WW2, the forces have been deployed everyday on operations, and in that time there has only been 3 years of those 72 years of relavtive peace in western europe where someone from the armed forces hasnt been killed whilst on deployment

Thank you for that; I never knew that even existed.
Quite appropriately, perhaps, that it's an 8F on top of the monument...!

...which will probably be my next 'kettle' purchase, after another two subsequent '66' purchases, all in due course...

Yesterday, I went down to the South Coast Model Railway Club's show.
http://www.southcoastmodelrailwayclub.co.uk/exhibition.html (http://www.southcoastmodelrailwayclub.co.uk/exhibition.html)

Whilst it may have only had just the one N Gauge layout :(, it was still a nice day out for me, as the show was very accessible from New Milton station.

I managed to pick up another 4 Freightliner flats (Farish) at a very reasonable second hand price (taking my total to 18... :hmmm: I might need to order more KFAs... :D).

On the train home, I was getting a bit misty-eyed nostalgic, as the train rounded the curve back into the Southampton area. As I glanced out at all the ISO containers stacked up in the Freightliner depot(s), I was reminiscing to myself about my time on Freightliners Ltd (c1988). At that moment, I just happened to glance out the window at all those 'anonymous'-looking Class 66 locos, when what did I see...

...but the nameplate of 66 418...! Along with the rest of the locomotive, of course... :)

It was only visible for a split-second, but it gave me a warm glow of pride, at what has been done to make it happen; in both 1:1 scale and 1:148 scale.

So, thank you again, Gareth, for having the idea and making it all happen (along with Ben and Mike at Revolution).
:thankyousign:

Charles.
Title: Re: PROJECT RAILWAY HONOUR BREAKS COVER
Post by: acko22 on September 11, 2017, 12:21:13 AM
Hi Everyone,

Well its been 1 year since the project became public and well as the saying goes what a difference a year makes!

This time last year the name and exact loco were still a closely kept secret, but as is history 66418 became Patriot - In Memory Of Fallen Railway Employees on the 11th November 2016 at Crewe Basford Hall.

It has been a long road to get here but one that's totally worth it, and despite the stresses and strains one I would begin again right from the start. The models have gone down a treat from what you all have been telling me and I am really happy that those of you that have a Patriot have enjoyed them.

When I set out on this project I had a few core aims:

1) Honour those brave railwaymen who gave their lives in service of the nation in World War One.
2) Raise awareness of the selected service charities.
3) Raise Funds for the service charities named.

And I feel that these aims are been reached amazingly and in the case of the first and in my view the most important one this has been exceeded with people saying they never realised how many railway men went to war and the fact that their trades were protected and all of these men were volunteers, which shows a special kind of bravery amongst all the brave men who went to war.

The naming I won't lie is well still a blur to me as I was a busy boy on that day, but from all accounts it was a good day from what people have told me! But since then it has been hard work with plenty of hurdles to overcome which with the help from all involved have been smoothly overcome.

So where is the project now? Well due to my unexpected trip abroad this year things have slipped the aim was to name a locomotive this year but due to all the paperwork and preparation that has to be done I have had to revise things.
The aim now is to have the next naming on the 1st April 2017 but it is also the centenary of the Royal Air Force so I think that is just as fitting a date to do the next naming.

As for the companies involved I will of course confirm them when I can but as before the name and the loco will be kept secret (well unless someone is willing bribe me!  :beers: ).

A huge thank you is owed to @Ben A (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=94) and @red_death (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=246) from revolution trains for their support from the start up to this point in a multitude of ways from the little things like checking my spelling, having me on their stand, taking online orders and posting the models while I was away.
Also Dapol who have done a cracking job of producing the models and making them 100% accurate to the day Patriot was named, they have been patient and really proactive with me to make sure everything was spot on and getting the job done in such a timely fashion, and Freightliner especially Chris Hewitt who worked hard to make the naming happen and have it at Crewe the home of the Patriot name (all 3 previous locomotives named Patriot were built at Crewe)

And finally all of you who have dug deep to purchase a model, without you all been willing to purchase the model the aim of raising funds for the ABF would not be happening! So a huge heartfelt thank you for your support!!

But of course with it been TINGS some picture of Patriot out and about

Even invading some DB territory on Little Ashton while @Skyline2uk (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1081) wasn't looking!

Finally there are still Patriot available to buy and with the models having cleared the production costs all the money now will go to the ABF to help Service personnel, veterans and their families in times of need.

Thanks

Gareth

Hi Gareth
It was great to catch up with you again at TINGS.
Just another thought to raise the profile of Project Honour even further - you could consider asking Prince Harry to dedicate the next loco. Having been a serving soldier with a marked sympathy for all those who have suffered, I feel there is a good chance he would make himself available. It could also help to persuade a third freight company to come on board.
Cheers,
Ged

Good to know another is on the way, will keep an eye out.

While I am here, has anyone had any issues with a wheel jumping the rail?
I have only run this Dapol Class 66 but my GF ones don't have any problems, I picked up the Evening Star Dapol 66 at TINGS and will chip and run that to see if it is any different. I was curious if anyone had any problems or if there might be an imbalance on mine somewhere.

Hi All
@Kaian (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4889) have you managed to solve the issue of the wheel jumping the rails?

As some will already have seen on Facebook, Anthony Sutton of West Coast Resprays has had his mucky hands on my running Patriot and done some weathering work using some pictures of the loco out and about in the 11 months Since it has been named.

He has done an amazing job and I cant wait to have it in my hands to play with run!

@Kaian (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4889) have you managed to solve the issue of the wheel jumping the rails?

No, not yet. I tried loosening the screw for the bogie which helped a little. I have identified it is jumping at a point just before the decline. I have another Dapol 66 the evening star and it feels a little heavier. I think it might be a little light but I want to check over the engine on that point to make sure it isn't anything track related first.

One has made it's way to me in Bangalore, India! Absolutely love it. Thanks @acko22 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4166) for the effort you've put into getting these out. The Dapol Class 66 is one of my favourite N gauge locomotives.
