Title: New to N Gauge
Post by: Rod on May 25, 2011, 09:40:58 AM
Well this seems like a nice friendly group so here's a bit about me...

After eleven years modelling exclusively in 3mm scale, I decided I wanted a change. For me 3mm has always been the ideal scale, but because of the lack of RTR items and building kits it can be hard work. OO is far too chunky and I don't have the room, so as I don't particularly like narrow gauge, I decided to scale down to N gauge. I wasn't convinced I'd like something this small but it's growing on me.

Over the last couple of months I've bought a few American and UK (green/blue diesel) items and I must say it's a pleasant change being able to buy items from modern manufacturers that run straight out of the box instead of having to make everything from kits.

I've started building a 4ft by 1ft shunting layout. This was inspired mainly by a write-up I kept of a small American shunting layout called Bart that appeared in Continental Modeller in 2002. Having re-read it I decided to do something similar. I'm going to try and do something which is suitable for both British and US outline.

Meanwhile I've developed my own solution to the problem of uncoupling Rapido-style couplings, using under-baseboard wires and rods, and if there is interest I can post details.

I've been using square plastic rod through a hole in the board with a little rectangular grooved top (based on the Fleischmann uncoupler track). I'd be very interested to know how you approached it and how well it works, particularly the remote control side.

Welcome to the forum Rod, sounds like you already have a wealth of modelling knowledge so you are most welcome  ;D

and feel free to post a layout thread and any info on your uncoupling system.

feel free to ask any questions

Welcome to the forum Rod, I am sure you will find plenty of interest here as there are other modellers building layouts from various parts of the world including the USA.
