Specifically Peco's Milk tankers....But tankers generally
What time period are these from. I would like a few to add variety to goods trains, But would these have been seen pre-1948 (I am post war LMS)

I believe they came in about mid 1930's but later most were converted to 6 wheelers such as the Dapol ones. However a while ago the Journal had a method available online on how to convert them using 1/2 of a 10 foot steel Peco chassis. I believe the conversion to 6 wheels was to improve stability as the 4 wheelers had a habit of derailing.
There is/was also some info on the net under 'Beginners Guide to Model Railways' which had a section on Milk traffic which is worth a look.

Yes I was having some thoughts about the 6 wheelers (was it a bigger tank) and doing a bit of kit bashing.
Hi Tom,
These decals might interest you if your doing a touch of kitbashing ;)

I asked about kits for these decals you may have seen 15ft types where also mentioned.

Is the 15' tanker more modern? was the 10' tanker converted to 6 wheels still 10'
The 10 ft w/b tanker when converted to a 6 wheeler had a 13 ft w/b chassis, 6ft 6 in + 6 ft 6 in. This agrees with the Dapol model I have and also the photos in GW coaches by Russell and also the instruction sheet from The Journal from a while back. The photos in GW coaches is dated 1937. I gather that the tank was owned by the dairy and the chassis by the railway and some tankers were still in use iup to late 50's early 60's and I gather a couple have been preserved.

Did the actual tank stay the same size?
What and where is 'The Journal'
Yes the tanks stayed the same size, the method in the Journal addes an extra pair of wheels and reuses the other bits.
By the Journal I mean the N Gauge Society Journal. The 6 wheel conversion was by Mike Harris and dated Oct 2002 and titled Six Wheel Milk Tank Wagons, acording to the notes I have.

Note how the end supports angle slightly out on the normal 10' wb tanks, but inward on the 6-wheel milk tanks.
More pictorial reference here Tom ;)

Does anyone know or have experience of Dapol selling plain tankers to allow modellers to add their own livery ?
The closest you'll get to 'plain' is probably the silver "Unigate Creameries" ones I bought when they first came out, that's why I bought them ;)

Cheers Paul
I have not started my layout yet, but this little build is going to go ahead very soon. I will mix them for goods trains when ready (3 x 4 wheelers and 4 x 6 wheelers)
First to purchase 2 tankers and a matching chassis kit, One to stay a 4 wheeler and reference, the other for conversion.
Two tankers and a tanker kit have arrived, I am now looking in more detail and find the tank itself has too much detail (rivets, straps and that centre seam)
Although this is a Express Dairy (SR) Tanker it shows smooth tank and is the United ones.
Also the brake levers are different.
So I will smooth the tank from the kit and use an old chassis for donor parts.
I would not mind replacing the ladders too (anyone do brass photo-etched versions)
Hi Tom
Ratio do etched brass ladders comparing them to the ones on Dapol's 6 wheel tanker are a good replacement.

the ladders look good but postage is ridiculous
Ratio N Signal Laddering (Etched Brass) (218) In Stock £3.95
Shipping: £4.50
Total: £8.45
this would fit an envelope 60p first class
This may help as well

I have two 6 wheelers which I have heavily weathered (actually-nearly black) as this is usually how they ran in my period 59-63. Often the six wheelers would be added to local passenger trains en-route fromcountry areas to main stations.
Anyone know why this thread is so WIDE?
I have to keep scrolling back and forth to read it and it's annoying! :D

Hi Paul,
Not sure but it could be because the Picture of the tanker is over 800 pixels wide the page is ok here though.
