Title: West Coast Railways
Post by: portland-docks on November 23, 2011, 05:43:59 PM
i saw in another topic about creating railtour trains, and today at work i saw an empty rake of WCR coaches go past, must of been about 12 coaches all in maroon WCR livery.

i fancy making a train where its just WCR stock, no pullmans etc just the maroon stock.

what stock would i need? and where do i get the WCR decals etc, do i need the coach numbers too?

thanks for any help yall!

cant help on the stock but if you don't fancy printing your own decals try http://www.precisiondecals.com/wcrn.html

printing them? how do you print them?

If you can get the right fonts or artwork and have an inkjet or colour laser printer then you can get decal paper from someone like http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/default.aspx and you make your own.

Our very own Alex Crawford has been doing this for a while and has invented hie own railroad complete with colour scheme and custom decals

Unless you are lucky enough to own an Alps-style ribbon printer, then printing white has to be left to the bigger manufacturers. Precision Labels and the new GF Mk1s are your best bet for doing WCRC stock. The loco livery is pretty plain, so repainting shouldn't be too difficult.

the locos are mainly going to be steam, i just need the rolling stock. which mk1s am i going for?

No need to print decals - Precision Decals do them here:

http://www.precisionlabels.com/d32.html

For n gauge you'll need D32-B and D32-D.

If you're getting the newer tooling Farish mk1 coaches then you'll want:

374-012A BR Mk1 SO Second Open Maroon
374-187A BR Mk1 BSK Brake Second Corridor Maroon
374-107 BR Mk1 RMB Mini Buffet Car Maroon (not yet released)
374-084 BR Mk1 BCK Brake Corridor Composite Maroon (not yet released)
374-816 BR Mk1 FO First Open Maroon (not yet released)

This site will help you marry up the correct coach numbers & names with their type:

http://www.railtourinfo.co.uk/coach.html#set18

You could also get a couple of the Farish Second Parlour Pullman coaches to repaint into WCRC maroon as cars 348 & 350. I'm putting together a tutorial on dismantling these coaches for repainting very shortly as I'm currently repainting a pair into WCRC.

Cambrian Driver Dave can print white, he did me some custom number sets.

quick - just what I wanted - and reasonable price.

when do those last few coaches get released?

i will need to start purchasing quite a few more coaches now, including the two pullmans, i already have 2 but they are staying as pullmans!

this may take a while!

The other coaches are due around January - so not too long hopefully.

Was the WCRC set you saw yesterday the Compass Tours Hereford - Edinburgh (and return)?

If so it was formed of the following Maroon stock ... Mk2 PV, Mk2 TSO (x4), Mk2 Buffet (in Choc/Cream), Mk2 TFO (x6), Mk1 BCK
47786, 5487, 6115, 6103, 6022, 6000, 1201, 3359, 3352, 3313, 3431, 3326, 3350, 99680, 47851

This is pretty much the usual rake/formation for the Compass Tours charters, but can be as few as 9 coaches. Usually 11 or 13 depending on route though :-)

Hope this helps.

Tony

My WCRC rake (as shown in the other thread) is of 3 TSO's, a BSK and an SK (but as per the real one this has a TSO interior). Like Chris i'm gonna be repainting some SP Pullmans into maroon (Eventually i'll do all 4 that WCRC have). When the other coaches are released i'll get some of them too as i'd like to have as many WCRC coaches as possible so i can mix and match rakes as per the real thing.

One note if you are using the Farish Mk1's (I'd recommend the New higher detailed ones) then to be prototypical then the ends of the coaches will need to be re-sprayed/painted into BR Maroon at all.

If ya want any more pics of mine then i'd be happy to take some

Thanks

I rubbed them down then sprayed some yellow on it, put a line of 1mm masking tape down the side then sprayed the red on and finaly the decals. Not sure I'll bother with the numbers as there so small in n gauge, dont really miss them!

Here are my WCRC liveried Pullmans now - still got to add decals though.

I've done a guide in the Tutorials section to dismantling these Pullmans (and the new Mk1s) for respraying. The paint is Holts Burgundy which I also used for 57601 and is a close match for the claret used by WCRC.

For the ends of my coaches i've used Railmatch BR Maroon, this is what i'll also be using for my Pullmans

would it not be easier painting it red first, then placing the tape on to leave a thin line for the yellow? that way you could do the two yellow lines it has. and i agree with the numbers

Not sure yet as I haven't got any of the mk1s yet. If not then I will repaint them to match. The colour used on the Pullmans is a close match for WCRC coach claret so if the maroon mk1s don't match then they'd be better repainted to match my 57601 loco.

yeh i see what you mean, im going to just try get a set of mk1s and then remove any logos and numbers on them and replace them with the WCRC ones. im not too fussed about the pullmans as they arent on every train are they really, plus im still trying to build my pullman train so i dont want to buy 2 pullmans to repaint them unless i can get them stupidly cheap

Something which may be of interest to you Chris. During my research for my WCRC rake i discovered that the locos and coaches are different shades. The coaches are in bog standard BR Maroon whilst the Locos are in WCRC Maroon. But hey if you ever see a WCRC train its very rare to see two coaches exactly the same colour (as most of them are filthy!)

Hi all,

I've finally got one of my West Coast Pullman Coaches complete with transfers (Big Thanks to Cambrian Driver Dave for these!)

It's not perfect but suits me fine (the shiny marks on the carriage sides are severely magnified in the pics, hardly noticable from a viewing distance)

looking good mate, was that one of the blue/grey pullmans?

was the gold border one of the decals too? last i saw they only did the numbers and pullman names :S

You are correct, this was originally a Blue/Grey one. I stripped the 'Blue' using fine wet and dry leaving the grey as a very nice base colour.

The number and lining is a one piece transfer that i had custom made for me by Cambrian Driver Dave.

thats very nice mate, how much did those custom mades cost?

iv got a few of those blue/greys reserved, got to wait until new year to buy them lol, think they might look good on my new nymr style layout as a special locomotive/train :)

Transfers cost me £15. May seem a fair bit but this was for a complete set of 4 (99347,99348,99350,99352)

I've got another Blue/Grey awaiting conversion which i will be 'attacking' shortly

Iv only just got round to repainting my pullmans, and messaged cambrain driver dave about transfers.

Iv painted them using humbrol paint, crimson i believe as it looks pretty close to wcrc livery.

However they are a different shade to the mk1s i have, anyone else noticed that?
