Difficult choice here because they are all lovely :heart2: :heart2: even the wacky looking 380

Would have to go with the Eurostar though

Class 305 I used to go on as a child. Why? Because being slam-door stock you could open the window and stick yer head out and you can't on modern trains :D

Plus the slam doors themselves, much better than these pushbutton Star Trek slidey things they have now, no soul

Would have to be one of these that I travelled on a lot as a kid:

http://www.semgonline.com/gallery/class415_1.html (http://www.semgonline.com/gallery/class415_1.html)

I always looked for the red line above the door/windows as that meant it was a single compartment.
If I got in one of those it felt like you was in your own private carriage!
Silly I know but its different when you're a kid...  :D

Without a doubt I would have to say the 5BEL electric Pullman units used on the Brighton Belle services, and in the umber and cream livery! :D Can't wait to see the restoration project hit the rails again!

Mine used to be The 4-Vep but with the amount of time looking at them while making them i have grown a massive liking for the 442

I always had a soft spot for the class 321s in original NSE livery.

But maybe I am just odd like that.  :laughabovepost:

The class 421 - 4 CIG. They were comfortable and reliable.

There are so many aspects of them I miss on my daily commute; the fact the doors don't close '30 seconds prior to departure' (I have had a number of arguments with Southern that there are more than 30 second in a minute, so the doors can close and the train depart in that period of time!), and you don't have to wait for the driver to release the doors before you can get off; the fact carriage designers treated passengers as passengers and not sardines; the fact that first class (not that I use it) was denoted by more than just a bit of cloth on the headrest; the fact you don't get blasted with cold air from the air con...or deafened by the automated announcement system with its incessent bing-bong; and the fact you don't get multiple internal injuries with the train rattles across the points just south of Purley at more than about 50mph! (and breathe!)

I made the pilgrimage to the Lymington branch a couple of years ago just before they retired the 3-CIGs from the route. It reminded me of just how much I missed them!

The 304s.  Towards the end of their career you had to start getting up out of your seat two stops short because you'd sunk so deeply into them.  The 504 seats were the same and very bouncy.

I can't decide between a 4-COR or 2-BIL. The 2-BIL probably wins if only because the lights went out when a single unit went through a conductor rail gap.

On the Brighton line
VEPS were drafty.  End up next to the door and you would freeze...
CIGs & BIGs much better as you could sit away from the door.  The ride was good and you could fall to sleep OK (woken up by the sound of Wivesfield Junction). On the BIG - toast in the morning beer in the evening...

On the North Kent Line
EPBs were nostalgic but the ride was rough, the doors were drafty and if you had been to the pub on the way to Charing Cross it was a long ride home.  Networkers were far more comfy, warm in the winter - cool (ish) in the summer.

So to sum up, I think the Networkers (Class 465) were my favorite...

Class 303 was the first EMU I saw and so became a firm favourite, especially in their original incarnation with the Caley ( Prussian ) Blue paint scheme, wrap-around driver's windows and glass partitions behind the cab! Us kids would fight for the front seat to get a great view of the track and the less-cool could pretend to drive!

The wrap-around windows had to be replaced - with flat armoured glass panels to protect drivers from bricks and the glass partitions vanished about the same time. The lovely paint scheme was vandalised, first to BR Blue then a number of less than inspired PTE schemes.

Ahh, nostalgia ... but I don't miss the dreadful ride ( especially north of the Clyde ) or the pyrotechnics from less than robust electrical gear!

Love all the southern stuff, obviously, rude not to, but was was always a little jealous of the 309s out of Liverpool street.

Wrap round cab windows, maroon livery? There was even a cute 2-car version just in case you wanted one for your back garden. Sex on rails!
(apart from the off-centre headcode panel, obviously.

In no particular order:

The original LSWR 3-Subs: Because of their heritage, longevity, ubiquity and distinctive cabs.

The Brighton Belle: Obvious!

Similarly, the 6-Puls: Because similar to the The Belle, it features Pullman class in an EMU, which makes it a bit quirky and distinctive as far as units go.

4-Cor: Which represents the pinnacle of stylish Southern EMU evolution, and I can just about remember them too :)

And finally the 1926 (LBSCR designed)  'Motor Luggage Van' or Milk Van units used on the Coulsdon and Wallington line.  I don't know if they ever had a designation as such - but they had a sort of DMLV marshaled in the middle, with non-motored Driving trailers at each end of the train.  Very peculiar affairs and something that would be an interesting curiosity to model.

When I were a lad I used to like the 313, 508 and any others which looked like those as they looked quite futuristic at the time. By the way I had to look up pictures of them to remember the class numbers and came across THIS PAGE (http://www.therailwaycentre.com/Pages%20EMU/EMU_index.html) which was most useful for someone like me with memory issues. Now, where was I?

Used to catch an Alton to Waterloo EMU, from Farnham to Brookwood, on the way home from school (which is why it is my favourite), and invariably it was number 4711, which was also the name of a perfume popular with the girls in those days (1961 - 1966).

From the number 4711 it sounds like a Class 405 4-SUB. These used to ply their trade on the Victoria to Epsom/Dorking line when I was at school in South London in the 70s/80s. Untidy cables all over the front end, filthy bouncy seats and scary non corridor compartments - if a shady character got in one of those you had nowhere to go until you reached the next station... In fact they were so bad, they were iconic and thus my favorite EMU as well :worried:

These sound like the ones I used to use from Staines (my gran lived there) into London with luggage racks made from a sort of rope netting a bit like a hammock. I/we used to be able to climb into those, I have no idea why we did that, but I don't think I'd chance it now even if they did still exist due to being 35 years older and a couple of stones heavier.

My Mum told me that when she was going to school by train, her and her friends used to hang onto the luggage rack and kick the seats so that clouds of dust would come up in the adjacent compartment. Apparently success was when you could hear the passengers coughing!

I have to agree with the APT-P, and as you can't just uncouple it and add coaches, it's an EMU in my book. (Also has EMU numbering series.)

After that I'd have to say class 442 Wessex Electrics. Great looking, fast and smooth with a nod to the past with 4REP running gear. Beast!!!

Cheers. Timmo

If I have to move away from the fire I have to say that the "Clacton" units (later class 309 ?) with the wrap around windows were a real gem in thir maroon days.

But for a real experience you couldn't beat Bullied's Waterloo & City line units. They could beat any Disney world themed ride on the short but body shuddering trip between Waterloo & Bank. Nobody in those days would have dared take a cup of water on them let alone a beaker of molten coffee... Happy days.

Fine units indeed, love the REP-like scream of the power cars as they go past at speed.

Although they were considered plenty powerful enough when "new", they have very poor acceleration compared to later generations of EMus, and this reduces capacity on busy double track lines (Soton-Basingstoke, Gatwick-Brighton).

Yes they are underpowered in today's high-acceleration railway, but for a 50+ year old running gear they have worked well.

I drive the Class 165/166 Turbo DMU for FGW, and last year the units went through a period of serious lack of power. Our fleet department have done wonders with them since though, but still no where near the power of modern trains. The HEX units out of Paddington leave us standing in their sparky arcy dust.

Electric units will usually out-accelerate diesels due to the better power-to-weight ratio. The fact that the turbos have to lug their fuel around as well as the passengers does not help matters. ;)

Do you do the Gatwick to Reading route? The 165s used to make me feel very sick but the last few times I've been on them, they seem to be much smoother.

If I let you know when I am next on this route, could you make an unscheduled stop at Winnersh Triangle? I have to get off the 165 at freezing cold Wokingham and wait for about 30 mins to catch the Juniper that stops at WT.

Luckily coming back today, someone gave me a lift to Ash station so I avoided the hell hole that is Wokingham station (although it is going to be redeveloped thank goodness!).

P.S. the staff at Wokingham station are wonderful - it is just the dilapidated station that is so bad - particularly the Reading side.

Sorry, I don't do the Gatwick line, a couple of links above me. The Turbos are doing quite well at the moment, so glad they're not making you feel ill.
As Winnersh station is operated by SWT I don't think they'd like us stopping there and taking all their school children business lol.

It is just so frustrating though - watching the FGWs speed through WT and me having to catch a Juniper to then catch the FGW.

The Junipers are becoming one of my favourite EMUs.  They are a real success story. They used to be so unreliable and now they are the most reliable fleet - getting the golden spanner award.

I worked as a fitter for SWT  at Wimbledon before starting this job, and Wimborne were telling me that the big change with the Junipers happened when they gave Alstom the boot and took maintenance in house. They were up to 50000 miles per casualty when I was there.

It's always a pain watching trains speed thru stations, it baffles is when we get not to stop orders when we're delayed, then see people on platforms looking miffed as we sail thru. If we're on the next one that does stop we're rammed, and get all the grief. Not good, but that's control sitting in a nice warm office for you.

Already doing that, spent 2 years onboard, followed by 3 years in various Signal Boxes then a short stint in the National Train Control Center in New Zealand, now driving suburban services in Auckland, signing Auckland to Pukekohe (both routes) and Auckland to Waitakere - quite a limited selection of routes but enough to keep me entertained!

Bet your weathers better than ours. Enjoy. It's going to be interesting to see what happens at the next franchising round, when they sort it out, and see what happens when Crossrail starts, coz Crossrail will take most of our paths to Paddington, so we'll see what develops.

We'll definitely get Sparky Arcy's, just don't know what type. Still rumours that we'll end up with refurbed Class 319s, but we're hoping for new trains instead. The 319s are past it...

Here's a Class 319
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_319 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_319)

Here's a Class 165
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_165 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_165)

The 166 is the same as a 165, but has air-con, fewer hopper windows and carpets throughout. Oh, and luggage space in the middle vehicle, which the schoolkids use as a seat.

319 is also the only standard UK EMU to have made it to Calais station.

Any chance of some pics anyone...? :photospleasesign:

All these TOPS codes.... haven't got a clue whats what, loco's i'm fine with - but with units i'm lost.  ???

Living in diesel country, an electric train is a tad rare... (not for much longer, FGW 'leccy's in the post !)

I was too mate until I found THIS LINK (http://www.therailwaycentre.com/Pages%20EMU/EMU_index.html). Scroll down a page to the "Recognition files" section and click on the numbers to see a picture of what they are on about.

Here's a Class 319
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_319 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_319)

Here's a Class 165
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_165 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_165)

The 166 is the same as a 165, but has air-con, fewer hopper windows and carpets throughout. Oh, and luggage space in the middle vehicle, which the schoolkids use as a seat.

Cheers, Timmo

Hi Timmo

For the purposes of a comparison, here is what I drive.

See anything familiar?  ;)

Correct, however they have had a little more than cosmetic surgery since they entered the country!

SWTs fleet

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_West_Trains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_West_Trains)

The 442s are now on the Gatwick express line but there is a picture of the SWT Wessex, which (IMHO) is one of the most gorgeous trains ever

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_442 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_442)

Southern's fleet

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Trains (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Trains)

The Darth Vader Junipers are being transferred from Gatwick express and converted back into SWT style Junipers

Some time ago, prompted by an article in Modern Rail, I posted this about the merry-go-round of trains between SWT and Southern, which is nuts!

I knew they had a complete rebuild from the frames up and they do look good. Got a stopper to Oxford to do now.

My favourite has to be the old 4-REP. Trips down to Southampton or sometimes Bournemouth having refreshments in the buffet was a wonderful way to travel. Funny, it never seemed quite as good going in the other direction up to Waterloo.

Definitely 442s for me. Always used to like them anyway, but got a cab ride in 2402 as an 8 year old from Brookwood to Basingstoke, that did it!
