Title: May sell up..
Post by: cudders on January 01, 2013, 01:29:22 PM
Well, with so many hobbies and seemingly not enough time something has to go..

Half built layout's and still buying stock is just daft. So I think I may sell-up as I can't ever see me doing it anytime soon.

Still unsure so will ponder for a few weeks.. :(

Think very carefully before you make your decision.
You may well regret it later.

Definitely give it time, early summer this year i was doubting any future  in my hobby thanks to work and family commitments but things change and 2 months later i was converting stock into an EMU and back working on buildings for the layout,,,

I whole heartedly agree with the above sentiments.  If you want to pack it all away then do that - but don't get rid of anything.  See how you feel in 6 months, 12 months etc and if you decide to restart you haven't got the massive re-investment...

Cudders,

Just put all your stock in a box, put it in a corner somewhere and forget about it!!!!

Then at some point in the future, you wil be sitting in your favourite armchair with a cuppa and you will suddenly think "You know what, I fancy building a model railway, I wonder if that old stuff of mine still works" you'll go and find the box of stock, (Hopefully remembering to pack some track and a controller away with it as well  ;) ;) ) take it all out, put the track on the dining table and start playing trains. Then in your minds eye a layout plan will sart to formulate and hey ho your back in business.

If not, then stick a list of your stock on here and the vultures will circle and snap the lot up  :D :D

Already circling........ :D

Seriously though Cudders, listen to the advise already given.......
Railway modelling is not just a hobby......it's a way of life......we all have times were we feel like packing it all in but once the bug has bitten the desire to build something is always within us.It may lay dormant for a while....weeks,months,even years but one day that desire WILL return......hang fire and see how you feel come the summer months would be my advice.....

I mothballed my layout for ten years while my children were growing up. As I'd kept everything my start up costs were greatly reduced even if the locos were showing their age.  If you haven't got the space to keep your layout then sell it but why not keep your favourite locos and rolling stock so you can start again when you are ready?

I agree with the others.  I sold all my Carp fishing gear years ago an lived to regret it.

What I should have done was sell off what wouldn't keep up with the passing of time and mothball the bulk of it until I was sure.   :hmmm:

Agree with the rest of the world. Give it time !!!

I sold all my model railway stuff about 20 years ago (it was the OTHER scale sorry) and regret it even now. It takes up what ? a few small boxes. If you sell it you will get peanuts compared to what it will cost to rstart in a few years. Be warned model railways are an addiction that CANNOT be cured !

Sit on it for a while. Put all your models in a decent box, store somewhere and forget about it for the short term.
One day in the future, your inspiration will return. When it does you will have all your models ready to go. I hope you decide to stay,

I wish you all the best and a happy new year.

Totally agree with that. I can't look near my layout either right now because I'm busy at other things but I know I'll be back with the trains soon! For 25 years this has been a pattern - once the bug has bitten it always bites again! So keep your stock and plan.........

See the same in all hobbies, we have people in the car club that have sold cars for reasons other than financial-need and two years later they're regretting it, looking for another one and finding that there's none about that are any good or those that are cost twice as much as they used to  ;)

Trains take up little space and you won't get that much for them, store them away as everyone else has said

Yes, keep hold of them, I kept all mine from my layout that i had years ago & glad i did. Got my interest back a couple of years ago & built a new layout. Had to replace a few split gears on most of my loco's though  ::)

Sold most of mine when I split from the ex 15 yrs ago - had no room at the new place. Always regretted it  :'( :'(

Found a new lady to share my life with 4 yrs ago who has allowed me to rekindle my interest (evens goes to shows with me).

So just box it and sit back, do whatever you want. Don't sell up. You never know.

What are you talking about man?

They're are only 4 other hobbies, drinking, smoking, gambling and womanising, all of which can be done while n gauging, except the last one obviously, but that only keeps you out of the layout room for... I dunno ...15 minutes :D

There was a fifth hobby but my football team lost 5-0 so potentially given that up!

Don't sell yet. Keep the faith! You will come back but if not (don't know what you model) there are some ridiculous prices for old stuff as you prob know. There's a Lima (yes crappy old Lima) french loco I want. Cheapest ebay £190!

Stay with us!

Heed the advice, Cudders :)
Mojos come and go, but the railways get into your bloodstream so resistance is already futile as you have been assimilated.
Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best

Thanks for the replies guys.

I know what you mean! My other hobbies are..rebuilding my Lambretta, I have an allotment, I have marine fish and I also paint wargame figures for cash. Work full time, football and far too many visits to the pub..

Time for the layout is nil at the moment. I will defo keep my fave things and those I probably couldn't get again like my J50's and A5's. The rest I will think about but could do with the cash too.

Alot to think about.

Not the right area but which wargames figures do you paint?  :-[

As for giving up the hobby, if you feel you have too much to store, sell just a few models on and box up your favourites, some track and a controller in an area youll remember and wait a few months. Im sure the bug will bite again and youll want to continue/restart a layout. (as others have said here) If not after a few months, sell on the rest.
At the end of the day, its your choice though

Cudders, I know we all empathise with you and for many different reasons. Personally I blundered with the plan, simple but in practice/skill level I know no solution (wonderful if operated from the back/fiddle area). I don't  know about you but my answer was to keep buying stock hoping to get that spark back, end result swamped, it's a fight to get anywhere near the layout. Perhaps I have become a collector. Point being only you will know how much this pastime means to you. So certainly keep your special things just in case of a change mind in the future. Cheers john.

Hi Pal, I've done most areas and scales but mainly now do Napoleonics in the smaller scales.

Hi

Don't sell up - you will regret it someday.

I have packed up my n gauge layouts 4 times and non of these events were because I had to move but because I did not have the time to devote to the hobby.

Every time I packed away the locos in their boxes which I always keep and put the rolling stock in spare room cabinet drawers. I also wrapped and stored the points. Everything else was split up and put in the loft - even the base boards - some had to be cut into sections to fit through the hatch. Peco flexi track was stored kept together with elastic bands and string in bundles and put in the loft.

I had moans from others wanting to use the spare room drawers for their spare clothes but not enough to warrant them being moved.

I have moved the packed up railway stuff six times to new houses.

Each time the railway was ressurrected I was able to re-use a lot of the stuff and this has saved me a packet (especially with points).
I have now even got most of my old Minitrix and Peco locos working again after cleaning away all the dust and grime outside and within.

Now that I am retired, have the space and time I am very glad I kept them all!!

Cheers

Mac

Well, decision has been made.

Keeping one box of stuff(decent size) and rest is going.

I may regret it, time will tell  :hmmm:

Well after more thought and selling about 10 wagons......

I went out and bought Class 108 DMU and a Class 03  ::)

I just couldn't do it...all boxed and packed ready for when I start again..probably in the loft.

Well I have tried to give up model railways twice and I keep coming back.  In the 80s I sold all my railway stuff to fund my new computer hobby.  After returning to the hobby I gave all my N gauge models to my brother who then went on to exchange them for OO items!  In 1996 I gave in again and have been with N Gauge ever since.  I so wish I had kept the models from the earlier times as I have ended up re-purchasing a number of them.

The good thing with N Gauge is that the models seem to hold their value well.  So unless you need the cash I would suggest you pack them away carefully and forget about them.

Two car DMU, shunter and some wagons. Sounds like you need a micro-layout !

You know I would think a 3ft piano line (maybe a 2'6 one) would fit both the DMU and the shunting including fiddle siding at the back.

I understand how you feel Cudders, you have a lot of irons in the fire which is great, but keep your train stuff cause you will need it later.
