range was  :censored: great, as long as you didn't get the idiot whose weapon jammed, and then turned to tell the instructor  :censored:

Going completely OT here, but.....

On my Mechs Course at Locking we had a WRAF who did that with her SMG.

After we'd blatted away with our SLR's, killing those nasty Soviets from 25 yards  ;) ;) She calmly walked up to the firing point with her SMG (Sterling Sub-machine Gun based on the WW2 Sten gun) and started loosing off at the Target, not getting anywhere near it because 25 yards was probably too far even for that, anyway the damn thing kept jamming on her, not unheard of for that type of weapon, so she was getting quite angry with it.

Me and one of the lads where still on the range counting brass when the weapon jammed again and she just turned round with it and shouted "This  :censored: gun has jammed again!!" Me and my oppo just hit the deck shouting her name followed by "What the  :censored: are you doing!!" Which was also what the the Rock Cpl shouted, however this didn't have the desired effect of her turning round to face down the range again, oh no!!! What she did was just drop the weapon on the floor and go into full female scream & cry mode!!!

Needless to say she was escorted off the range and stayed as a Non-Combatant member of the WRAF, of which Females in the WRAF had the choice in those days.

Right I'll get off the sandbag and stop the lantern swinging now, back to normal service if you please  ;) ;)

Cheers

Neal.
Ah RAF Locking where if you missed the range to the left or right you were aiming at the M5....
Yep I've shot at that range a few times (1977-79)

SWMBO had her marksmans badge when the WRAFs were non combatant... Then they brought in WRAFs being combatant, but at first didn't increase their wages.. So she dropped being qualified, as she didn't need to having signed on before that requirement..
One very upset Rocky , because she had made such a fuss to be allowed to shoot in the first place..

Dad started a Canberra in the mid 1970's, he had been a civilian 12 years by then.. The aircraft broke down on Benbecula (with the aircrew conveniently having fishing rods and spare clothing on board),. The ground crew came up and "fixed" the aircraft, and then left for the ferry .. So the aircraft needed someone to start engines ... Dad hadn't played with Canberras since the late 1950s

I went to the Doctors this afternoon and had my booster jab. So why is this in the 'Unhappy' thread? The nurse said my arm might be a bit sore later, so when I asked if she could give me a letter explaining that I could not make the tea today as I might have a sore arm, she just laughed!  :(

The "spent cases" blurb always amused me, as a rigger for a time on VAS, canberrra starter cartidges were always available.  They do look nice polished up, one either side on the fireplace hearth. ;)

might be my memory leading me astray, but didn't the Hunters have a cartridge starter as well ?

seem to remember trying to get hold of a couple when I was out in the Gulf, but they'd all gone home by the time we started patrol along the Hunter line, and of course none left laying around as FOD  :hmmm:

One, at least, of the Hunter Marks had them. I remember Raymond Baxter commentating on a Farnborough show and he pointed out that the 'new' Hawker version of the Hunter would start with a bang. Which mark it was will take a bit of Googling. Hunter

we had 8 & 208 there, and both sdns had FGA.9s with a couple of T.7s and IIRC a couple of FR.10s

08:30 this morning SWMBO's phone went off with a text from NHSvaccines.

apparently according to their records she is eligible for a covid-19 booster, but hasn't had one.

oh, hang on, what was it we both went up to Haywards Heath for a few weeks ago ?

that's right, our boosters  :veryangry:

mind you at the time I was told I hadn't had my first and second doses so couldn't have a booster, even though NHSvaccines had texted me to book my booster  :veryangry:

luckily I had my cards from my first and second jabs, and common sense prevailed.

just another example of how, once anything gets into the hands of NHS administrators it is totally  :censored:

Yes, my wife and I have both had that text message too. Sounds like a 'puter error to me.

it's ok as long as it doesn't happen to someone flying somewhere, and they show as not having been boostered or jabbed.

I'd assume that one system downloaded the list to another to send out the texts, so is that system actually correct, or is it the texting sytem that has failed ?

or perhaps the NHS just can't manage to get two systems to talk to one another.

For the last couple of days, I have been feeling 'a bit under the weather', with problems in the 'waterworks' department.  I went to the Doctors this morning and told him that I thought I had another bladder infection, as the symptoms were very similar to the last time. He took my temperature - yes, we were looking at a fever. He then tested a 'sample' - yes, blood present.  :'(. So the upshot is I am now on a two week course of antibiotics. Louisa asked me a while ago how I was feeling. I replied that I felt like an old man tonight, which elicited the reply, "You are an old man".  I mean, who needs enemies!  ;)

Bad time to be on antibiotics as they tell you not to drink. Fortunately this is a fallacy they told this to soldiers who had a specific condition to stop them getting drunk and being reinfected,
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

I would have told you to go and find one then.

I hope you're better soon though and I've never stayed off alcohol when on antibionics. My theory is that the alcohol will kill off the baddies and the more alcohol you have the more baddies you kill off

Flagyl / metronidazole is the only antibiotic where drinking alcohol is not advised - it causes nausea / vomiting, this is because it is related to a drug used for treating alcoholism

well said that man.
if alcohol [wipes / sprays] kill germs on the surface, then surely alcohol [whisky / rum / gin / vodka etc] will do the same inside you.

I have a theory that the 'daily unit limit' was actually put in place by germs, so if you exceed it, you will definitely kill the bugs  :beers:

stay safe, and 'sanitise '  :smiley-laughing:

I wondered who would be the first!  ;D

As has been pointed out, if alcohol kills germs on the surface, why not use it for killing germs on the inside?  ??? As Louisa has just said, if it has taken me until after 5pm to switch the computer on, I must be poorly but thank you all for the comments.
