Various Uriah Heep tracks across the 6 or so albums I have, my favourite being 'Demons & Wizards'

Quote from: Moonglum on January 08, 2024, 08:37:13 PMI know of at least three versions of this much covered classic Jimmy Web song, Richard Harris RIP, (the lovely) Donna Summer RIP and these prog rockers. From their 1972 album "Pathfinder", here is Beggars Opera's rendition of "MacArthur Park". Another band originally on the Vertigo label...

It's never really been a song that I rally like but I think that the Beggar's Opera  version is pretty good.
Justin Hayward dis a fair job of it too.
I'll get round to fixing it drekkly me 'ansome.

I've been revisiting a favourite album of mine from 1970 today.
It's a self titled LP by Ian McDonald and Michael Giles (from the early King Crimson).
Never a huge seller but to my mind this was fabulous particularly the whole of side 2 with a track entitled Birdman ( starts about 24.08 on the video clip).
I've always thought that the conclusion/climax (at about 39-00 mins) is one of the most beautiful pieces of prog rock music ever written.
Possibly not to everyone's taste but I urge you to fast forward to 39 mins even if you don't listen to the rest.
Might want to turn up the volume.

I really did try to like it, Martin, but sadly failed this time.
Here's one that may have crept under many a radar - a Yes album just entitled 'Talk'

Moonglum

Thank you Martin, this is the first time I have listened to McDonald and Giles, very quirky, challenging and of its time. Both talented musicians and Michael Giles' drumming is quite prominent in the mix and very inventive as it was with King Crimson - somewhat underrated. The album cover features their respective girlfriends. I had McDonald's (RIP) solo album but was disappointed, his work with Foreigner will also be remembered.

Cheers,

Tim

Another band that managed to slip beneath most people's radar in the early 70s was Rare Bird although some folk might remember their minor, and rather untypical, hit Sympathy.
Their best work was on their Epic Forest album which is often reviewed as an under rated  rock classic.
Maybe a little folky with vocal harmonies but with nice guitar and keyboard work.
Perhaps lacking a little in production but I think it's superb.
See what you think :

Just listened to this right through.
I have to admit that I pretty much lost interest in Yes after the mid 70s so this is a new album to me performed by a good mix of early band members.
It's pretty good with a rather more "rocky" feel than the Yes of the early 70s but still an accomplished offering.
Having said that, and  maybe it's me getting old, but I'm finding Jon Anderson's voice increasingly annoying.
Overall though, a worthwhile listen.

This was a youtube recommendation, although I'm not a particular cat lover, but I know some of you are, this tickled my fancy, and it's something of an ear worm now :smiley-laughing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndl9OClJjXo&list=RDndl9OClJjXo&start_radio=1

The bass on this album, even on the vinyl (notably Endless Dream) is absolutely staggering. For me, it's the best album Trevor Rabin did with yes. (I saw Anderson, Rabin & Wakeman a few years back, they were excellent.)

I've heard that track so much.
Bristol City use it as part of the lead up to kick off routine.
It's quite effective blasting out at full volume over a good quality PASystem at Ashton Gate.

You could almost say this song has a locomotive feel to it in terms of the long howls like a steam train. It's absolutely 1one of my favourite songs ever, sooooooooooooooo beautiful.
