port perran

This is where it all started for me

The first band I ever saw live, if you discount seeing Freddie & The Dreamers in about 65 which I was forced to endure with my parents, was Chicken Shack at Devizes Corn Exchange in 1970.
I would have been 15 coming on 16.
Chicken Shack, led by Stan Webb, an underrated guitarist, never made it big but did feature Christine Perfect (McVie).
I can remember being overawed by the entire experience and the rest is, as they say, history.
Here are The Shack in 2004 still featuring Stan Webb.

I'll get round to fixing it drekkly me 'ansome.

Bob Tidbury

Not the first band I saw by any means as I'm a lot younger than @port perran but I saw them for the first time at Swindon Arts centre (2004) and in Devizes a few years later. Not sure but I may have seen him/them at Giants of Rock in Minehead too. Awesome guitarist and really nice guy

In April 2024 I will be raising money for Cancer Research UK by doing at least 100 press-ups every day.  Feel free to click on the picture to go to the donations page if you would like to help me to reach my target.

To follow the construction of my layout "Longcroft" from day 1, you'll have to catch the fish below first by clicking on it which isn't difficult right now as it's frozen!

My niece asked me what I thought of Wham getting to No.1 after all these years, to which I replied "Stuff that. My morning listening was good old pomp rock i.e. Genesis, King Crimson and Pink Floyd" Don't think she was impressed but her fella seemed to agree with me

Not my cuppa tea at all I am afraid @Grassyfield , but this will probably not be yours either!

Wow Tim

That reminds me so much of a Moody Blues song.
Can't remember which one right now but it'll come to me.
Cheers

It isn't The Moody Blues it's John Lennon - Jealous Guy.
Just the very first bit as Steven Wilson comes in with the vocals.
Mrs PP disagrees so maybe I'm talking complete nonsense. Nevertheless a nice little song.
I've listened to a bit of Steven Wilson's stuff and have always been, let's say, mildly interested rather than madly keen.
Thanks for sharing anyway.

Now, how about this from The Feelies :

My first impression was a retro sound assuming (incorrectly) that they are a current band I have never heard of. There is a bit of Lou Reed in there and not unpleasant at all. "Dancing Barefoot" (Patti Smith) has a nice groove to it... check it out Martin @port perran ...

Here is another cover of "Dancing Barefoot" by First Aid Kit with an appreciative Patti Smith in the audience.

That version of Dancing Barefoot isn't for me Tim.

How about Heather Newman with Dirty Blues :

Just by way of a change - Bumpers (Island sampler) again :D
Here are just a couple of tracks. Spooky Tooth (hugely underrated at the time) and Mott the Hoople (before they went to pop with Bowie  )

Grassyfield

The long howls and his voice is just so awesome i love it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4P_D53dWd0 "And the twilight in the evening...so loooowwwwwwwww...slllooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww oooooooooooooooooo  ooo oooo. This version is best one also.

Moonglum

Good choices Mick @Newportnobby . I remember both, especially "Thunderbuck Ram" much, much better than "All the Young Dudes". I think Mick Ralphs thought so as well!

A big thumbs up for "Dirty Blues" Martin @port perran . Great sound and production.

I think that I can see a genre pattern forming with @Grassyfield posts, still not my cuppa!

Cheers,

Tim

Agreed Mick.
The Bumpers album was brilliant although we've been there before on this thread I think.
Yes, Mott were much better prior to going all poppy. Never really got into Spooky Tooth although I quite liked Walrus.

My claim to fame :
Standing next to Ian Hunter of Mott at the urinals in Devizes Corn Exhange. There's one for @Trainfish  :D . No witty quips
