Thanks Martin @port perran . During the 80/90s I used to listen to a lot of smooth jazz. Trouble was from the mid/late 70s there many fine exponents of the genre but as time went by their output became blander and blander. Far too many to mention all, but I liked Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin, Grover Washington Jnr, Spyro Gyra, Dave Sanborn, Acoustic Alchemy no name but a few.

Here is Acoustic Alchemy live in 2023, with "Lazeez". Greg Carmichael (guitar right) is an early member of the band, AA has a good reputation for being really entertaining live...

Thank you for that Tim.

I have listened to AA before. They are excellent but it's not really my sort of thing.

Incidentally, we had a holiday in La Gomera a few years back.
La Gomera is a tiny island off Tenerife. It is so different to Tenerife and incredibly quiet and laid back.
The island is known for musicians turning up and playing on the beach. In fact locals and holidaymakers are encouraged to join in.
It is not at all unknown for quite famous artists to appear often incognito and without announcement.
If I remember correctly AA had played there a few weeks before we arrived.
Just a piece of useless information for you but if you ever get the chance to visit La Gomera it comes hugely recommended by Mrs PP and I.
Cheers
Martin
I'll get round to fixing it drekkly me 'ansome.

Well Martin @port perran , I am delighted to tell you and Mrs PP that we have been to La Gomera (1997) and can agree what a wonderful place it is. We stayed at the Le Jardin Tecina, in Playa Santiago for a fortnight - superb! Flew in via Tenerife and took the ferry across. We hired a car and drove around for a couple of days.

I was listening to this band yesterday, I am sure that you will remember them. I knew Sonja's cousin and we went to see them back in 2103 here in High Wycombe. All I can say is Sonja is 74 now...

I only have Air Cut on CD but think it is better than their earlier albums.

Cheers,

Tim

If you like smooth jazz with some nice guitar sounds and laid back sax give these a try.
Threestyle they're called :

The twins are better looking than those old LMS diesels   ;)

@Moonglum
I used to have a huge crush on Sonja Kristina in my youth, and still have 'Back Street Luv' on 45rpm :)

port perran

Well there you go Tim.

Not many folk seem to have heard of La Gomera. Like you we took the ferry from Tenerife then a somewhat rickety bus to the other side of the island.

We were some 22 years after you staying at Vueltas as the lower end of the Valle Gran Rey in an Air BnB (right on the sea front).

We never go back to a destination on holiday, as there are so many places to see, but we would make an exception for La Gomera.

As for Curved Air, I see where @Newportnobby is coming from. I too had a soft spot for Sonja.

I saw them at Devizes Corn Exchange in the early days (just after Curved Air 11 came out). That must have been about 71 when I was 17.

Back Street Lv went down really well as I recall.

They were just that little bit different (well quite a lot different actually) to a lot of the bands that we saw around that time.

Great memories
Cheers
Martin

PS Martin, We kinda sailed past La Gomera a few years ago on a cruise, spotting nearby Mount Teidi on Tenerife through the clouds!

Sorry, Joe. Never heard of her
Edit:- Just googled her and, oh dear, not my type at all. She also comes across as a second rate Kate Bush going by the YouTube clip I watched.

In the meantime, this always gives me goosebumps. I heard it first on the Island sampler 'El Pea' which I have

The War on Drugs are a very good current band. Try their 2014 album "Lost in the Dream" or the 2021 "I don't live here any more". An excellent blend of Americana and Springsteen.....

An excellent band as you say and yes they have released a couple of outstanding albums.
Maybe a bit Springsteen like in places but I won't hold that against them too much.

Here is one for Mick, @Newportnobby , Epica is along the same lines as Nightwish and their symphonic metal, I like this older song of theirs (including the growling)...

PS not for @port perran me thinks!

Newportnobby

Thanks, Tim. I really enjoyed that, although I reckon Tarja Turunen edges it on both voice and looks :) I will investigate more 'Epica'
