Not sure if I've posted this before but I recently submitted this video as the railway song of the week for the Upstairs Downstairs weekly newsletter. It was included in last week's newsletter with a huge thank you from Max at the shop  :D
The song was written to commemorate the last train from Devizes on April the 18th 1966 (at 19:36) when that Beeching bloke vandalised our railways.
There are some great shots of this wonderful town and plenty of videos of trains in and around the area, albeit some of them are almost as old as @Newportnobby so neither are the best quality and are of course both showing their age  :P
I know all of the band members personally as they are all Devizes residents (and British Lion regulars, Clare actually works behind the bar) and Martin @port perran may even recognise a couple as he met/saw them very briefly at the beer festival. The video of the band was filmed at the Bell by the Green, just along from the British Lion, many years ago.
I hope you enjoy it  :beers:

EDIT: I forgot to add that there's a good article published by the Cornwall Railway Society all about the Devizes line which can be seen here if you're interested.

In April 2024 I will be raising money for Cancer Research UK by doing at least 100 press-ups every day.  Feel free to click on the picture to go to the donations page if you would like to help me to reach my target.

To follow the construction of my layout "Longcroft" from day 1, you'll have to catch the fish below first by clicking on it which isn't difficult right now as it's frozen!

<*))))><

Thanks John

Really nostalgic and memories. Sounds like a good weekend pub gig

Thank you for posting John, an interesting CRS link which I will read in full later. Interesting to note Lavington and Patney and Chirton, I did some bridge repair schemes in these locations back in my BR days at Swindon.

Cheers,

Tim

Lydeway bridge was where I started 'spotting. Saw my very first HST there in the late 1970s and thought it was brilliant! I've been in love with them ever since. Loads of class 50s too with several 47s, 37s, 56s. They were proper locos and trains  :D

Yep, those were the days! I only have a handful of photos of me working on the railways but two of them feature a Class 50 in the background. I thought the 50s always looked and sounded liked they meant business!!

Cheers,

Tim

PS Not listening to anything at the moment!

That's brilliant John.
I don't particularly remember those band members but we did meet a lot of people at the beer festival.
The film brings back memories of spotting at Trowbridge in the very early sixties. I remember what we termed the "Devizes Tankie" with a local goods for Devizes from Westbury.

I was in Devizes very briefly on Saturday morning but didn't see a bloke in a tou tou wandering about.
Cheers

While I was away at the weekend someone asked me what was my favourite live track or maybe the best ever live track.
I had a think and came up with Lindisfarne with We Can Swing Together

https://youtu.be/W7VnGeWJeHs?si=mzBM4CbgyKuZYPRZ

Certainly not a masterpiece and it won't be to everyone's taste.
I saw Lindisfarne twice in the early 70s. They were a great live act if a bit rough around the edges but tremendous fun.
This track, recorded in the band's native Newcastle certainly captures the essence of live performances in the early 70s.
The band had a knack for getting everyone involved and enjoying themselves.
Does anyone have any other ideas for atmospheric live tracks?

Harsh, but sadly all too true.
Mind you, looking at the DMU it's had a harder life than I have.

I saw Free in Northampton when 'All Right Now' was just released but this is my favourite of their live act, especially the brilliant bass by Andy Fraser (I also saw Lindisfarne a couple of times)

Moonglum

What an interesting challenge from Martin @port perran . I am not that familiar with Lindisfarne I am afraid...

Good choice @Newportnobby - a truly great band! For something a bit more contemporary, my favourite performance by Nightwish. The version at Wacken 2013 is pretty hot as well.

Mrs C describes this as Renaissance with balls! I love the end section - what a voice.

Cheers,

Tim

PS the studio audience at the Free performance must have been under strict instructions not to move a muscle!

Newportnobby

Nightwish - one of my top bands since I heard them in an eating house when I was on a business trip to Warsaw. I do prefer them with Tarja on vocals, though :heart2:

Bealman

Thanks for the Free clip, Mick. They were one of my favourite bands. They were huge in the NE.
Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

I have 7 of their albums and 4 x 45s :)

port perran

Thanks for those two clips.
I've never heard of Nightwish before. Interesting but not my thing at all so it's a bit of a thumbs down on that one.

As for Free, I only saw them once possibly 72 or thereabouts and again, not my favourites.

Great clips though.
Thanks chaps.
